Chicago- Cleveland State men's college basketball coach Gary Waters was not in a foul mood, but he did have fouls on his mind.
After the Vikings dropped their third straight Horizon League road game on Thursday at Illinois-Chicago, 74-68, the coach said officiating has played a part in the losses.
"We're having a hard time getting quality officiating," said Waters, whose club had been 7-0 in the league before this slide. "I don't want to blame the officials, but it seems the whistle is being blown twice as much against us rather than equally shared."
At least that has been the case in the past two games. At UW-Milwaukee, the home team went 29-for-41 on free throws to CSU's 13-for-19. At UIC, the Flames went 23-for-37 at the line, while CSU was 11-for-18.
The combined free-throw totals during the three-game drought are 72-for-104 (69.2 percent) for the home teams and 35-for-56 (62.5 percent) for CSU. Interior players J'Nathan Bullock, George Tandy and Kevin Francis have been limited because of early foul trouble during this stretch.
"All these games are being determined by foul situations," said Waters, who wanted to make it clear he was not outright blaming the refs. "Our top players have been in trouble the first five minutes, and that hasn't been the case all year.
"We have to find a way to change this whole outlook. I'm starting to believe we are being penalized for our aggressiveness on defense."
