FAIRBORN — A year removed from one of Wright State's most successful basketball seasons, the Raiders continue to win.
Many of the games have been so close, a final possession has provided the decider.
Entering Thursday's game with Loyola-Chicago, the Raiders are 17-6 overall and 9-4 in the Horizon League. Of their 23 games, 17 have been decided by nine points or fewer. The Raiders have won 13 of those.
Most of those games have been decided in the final minute. Eight have been decided in the final seconds. Of those eight — all decided by three points or fewer — the Raiders have won six.
"Certainly, I think there are times we've had some leads and had an opportunity to get a couple stops and a score and stretch them out, and we haven't done it," WSU coach Brad Brownell said. "We're trying to get better so we can be good enough not only to keep winning, but just play better basketball.
"We're not such a talented team we're able to just run away from people. We have to beat you possession by possession. We're not going to run away and hide quickly. We have to really work at it."
In the eight games decided by three points or fewer, here's how the Raiders have (or have not) won:
WSU 43, Butler 42, Dec. 8 at the Nutter Center: Will Graham's left-handed layup with 1:45 to play ended the night's scoring, but Butler stole the ball with 20 seconds left and A.J. Graves' 3-point shot at the buzzer was well-defended. Time ran out as the teams scrambled for the rebound.
WSU 58, Miami 57, Dec. 15 at the Nutter Center: Two Vaughn Duggins free throws tied the game at 55 with 1:47 left. Miami regained the lead on a basket with 5 seconds to play, setting up a Duggins-to-Todd Brown pass, resulting in a 3-point winning basket from the right corner just before the clock expired.
UW-Green Bay 52, WSU 49, Jan. 5 at Green Bay: Playing three-fourths of the game without Duggins, who badly sprained his ankle, the Raiders had a chance to tie on a 3-point shot. Cooper Land's last-second attempt was blocked and Troy Tabler's quick recovery led to his shot bouncing off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Cleveland State 65, WSU 63, Jan. 12 at the Nutter Center: A 3-point basket with 12 seconds left gave the Vikings a lead they retained when the Raiders fumbled a pass at the other end and a final shot to win the game was well off the mark.
WSU 76, Illinois-Chicago 75, Jan. 17 at Chicago: With the shot clock near the end and WSU leading by a point, Brown hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play, allowing UIC's 3-point basket a the buzzer to be rendered meaningless.
WSU 53, Loyola 52, Jan. 19 at Chicago: Duggins' two foul shots with 22.1 seconds left were the final points. Two Loyola shots just inside the buzzer were well defended.
WSU 53, UW-Milwaukee 51, Feb. 2 at the Nutter Center: Duggins spun into the lane and threw up a scoop shot to break a tie with 0.4 seconds to play.
WSU 50, Youngstown State 47, Feb. 9 at Youngstown: Brown's 3-point basket with 32 seconds left forced the Penguins to match for a tie, and an off-balance shot at the buzzer was wide.
