Retiring Cusack honored by AD organization
By Marc Katz
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Because he is retiring, Wright State athletic director Mike Cusack thought he'd skip this week's National Association of Collegiate directors of athletics (NACDA) meetings in Dallas.
However, the Athletic Directors Association (part of the NACDA), which consists of schools that do not have football, decided to give Cusack the Gary Cunningham Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received Tuesday, June 10.
Cusack was surprised, saying he was not much of an active ADA member. The Cunningham Award is named after the longtime athletic director and former UCLA basketball coach (50-8 following John Wooden and Gene Bartow). Cunningham has been AD at Western Oregon State, Wyoming, Fresno State and now UC Santa Barbara.
The NACDA will also honor WSU today with an excellence in diversity award. Wright State is one of 12 Division I schools to be honored, along with Ohio State.
WSU awards
Plenty of awards were handed out at WSU's all-sports banquet on Saturday. Honorees: softball coach Mike Larabee (Terry Hall coach of the year), baseball's Jeremy Hamilton (Don Mohr male athlete of the year), softball's Jherica Williams (Peg Wynkoop female athlete of the year), swimming's Ryan Klasmeier (Mike Cusack S.K.I.L.L.S award) and swimming's Jessica Weidert, cross country's Alex Gutman and soccer's Tara Geegan for the Dr. Carl Benner scholar-athlete award. Cusack also won the Tony Tononi Raider Award.
Brownell to speak
Men's basketball coach Brad Brownell will speak at the June 18 Friends of Wright State Libraries Luncheon entitled, "Pride of the Raiders: Building a Team, Creating a Community."
Held in the Nutter Center's Berry Room, the noon-1:30 p.m. event will be $17 for Friends' members and $19 for nonmembers.
