I am a bit concerned that we have five of our first seven league games on the road. Let's hope we can get off to a fast start. In return, we get 5 of our last 7 league games at home. That can be a really nice advantage if we are in a tight league race.

The only thing I really don't like is how they split our away games with Loyola and UIC. Why is the HL making us take 2 separate trips to Chicago?

I'm guessing that too.
A trip to UIC and a home match three days later will be a little tough I imagine. There's also something similar, with a trip to Loyola and a home match versus the Detroit Titans the week before the @ UIC and BB game.

League schedule points to larger crowds for WSU basketballBy Marc Katz Staff Writer Friday, June 27, 2008 FAIRBORN — Wright State men's basketball coach Brad Brownell ran his finger down his Horizon League schedule for this season and paused five times. "We've got five Saturday games at home," Brownell said, "and a sixth when you add the (ESPN) Bracket Busters game, which will be played in February." Saturday games usually mean bigger crowds, and most of them will be played with WSU students on campus, which wasn't the case last season. Also this year, the Raiders will finish with two league games at home — against Milwaukee on Feb. 26 and Green Bay two days later. Last season, the Raiders finished with two games on the road, losing them both. Brownell said the rest of the schedule would be released later this summer. It includes home games with Illinois State (the Nov. 15 opener), Miami and Toledo. Wright State's league schedule begins Dec. 4 in Green Bay, then moves to Milwaukee on Dec. 6. If he could change anything in the schedule, Brownell would move his home game with Cleveland State later in the schedule from Dec. 30, and he would put the two games in Chicago together. Cleveland State should be a contender this year, as should WSU, and Brownell wants that game to become more of a rivalry game that will gain in importance as the season progresses. As for the games at Illinois-Chicago and Loyola of Chicago, instead of being played two days apart as usual, they are being split to make room for the Bracket Busters game on Feb. 21. Wright State will play at Loyola on Tuesday, Feb. 10 and at UIC on Wednesday, Feb. 18, requiring two trips to Chicago instead of one. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/06/27/ddn062708spwsubb.html

There is no reason why we couldn't set attendance records this year with our team and the home schedule. We got screwed with our home schedule last year since many of the games were played while school was not in session. Based on our attendance numbers over the last 2 seasons, it has taken awhile for many of our fans to warm-up to the Raiders until late in the season. I really hope that many of our new raider fans realize that the next 2 years should be really special and that they could use the support as early as possible. I really hope that we can start the season with 7000+ fans and grow to 9000-10000+ fans.

I have mixed feelings about the home opener. I like that it is on a Saturday night when the students are still in class. I just wish it was against Norfolk State or one of the other weaker teams on our schedule. Illinois State is one of our top nonconference games. I hope our new post players are able to gel with their teammates before this game.

I'm not too happy we start off the year with one of our toughest non-conference games and I'm not happy we start our HL schedule on the road vs UWGB. They are one of the top 3-4 returning teams in the HL. I particularly don't like that UWGB is a veteran team full of seniors. We need to get our rotation set and get the new guys to step up right away with this schedule.

I'd love to see Western Kentucky or VCU added to the schedule.

I kind of like the idea of starting off with Illinois State. I like the idea of challenging yourself early without overwhelming yourself. Illinois State is a challenge and is a team that beat us last year, but it's not overwhelming. There will be a month of practice before that game. Illinois State can be a better focus and can push the team more in practice than Norfolk State (nothing against the Spartans, but...). Playing a tough team early, or first, can make for better practices. When you're preparing for Illinois State for a month, it tends to push a team more than preparing for team that isn't as challenging. I know most teams have a tendency to want to ease in to their seasons, but it takes some of those teams that ease in too easily a while to get their motors started. davidson stubbed their toes early on, but i think they became a better team sooner by playing north carolina (among other teams) right out of the gate.
Besides, the schedule is never going to fall in place exactly the way you want it to.

bomber, i am no rpi guru, but since i expect us to be top 50 team next year, i do not see how playing teams with rpis of 175-190 can help us. Coach Brownell has talked about scheduling a few times this past year at his coach's show. He layed out a pretty simple formula. Top 100 teams are considered quality teams. They help your RPI if you win or lose. Teams between 100-200 are considered solid teams. They improve your RPI if you win, but don't hurt you much if you lose. Teams between 200-250 do nothing for you if you win and hurt you if you lose. Teams below 250 hurt you if you win or lose. The basic components to the RPI are how much your own team wins and how much your opponents win. There are other specifics, but that's basically how it works. Your opponent's RPI actually have no direct impact on your own RPI or SOS (although obviously, generally speaking the teams with better RPIs will have won more games). If you look at some of the teams available on the list from basketballtravelers.com, teams like Western Kentucky, Southern Illinois, and VCU are non-major conference teams that could really push the RPI and SOS forward. WKU loses some pretty good players, but it looks as if they'll be pretty good again. They're always good for several wins in conference play.
