Valparaiso gets commitment from 7-foot JUCO for 2011By Mark Lazeruson July 17, 2009 Valparaiso has secured a verbal commitment from 7-foot, 247-pound Moussa Gueye for the 2011-12 season. Gueye, 20, is enrolled at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., a two-year school, where he needs to get his academics in order before being eligible for the NCAA. Lake Land coach Cedric Brown said he has graduated four players to Division I schools, including Ball State and Central Michigan, in the past couple of years. "Because he didn't qualify from his academy in Senegal, he has to graduate," Brown said. "We do a good job of putting together an academic program of study for our guys to move on to graduate and play in the NCAA. Skill-wise, he can come in and play minutes for Homer (Drew) right now at Valpo. Skill-wise, he is a Division-I caliber player right now." Brown was an assistant at Chicago State in the Mid-Con days, and he said that's why Drew is "entrusting" Gueye with him for the next two years. VU assistant Luke Gore first saw Gueye play during an Athletes In Action tour of West Africa. He finished playing for his national team in April, and came to Lake Land on June 2, where he is taking one summer class and working out with the coaching staff a few days a week. He'll be a true freshman for Lake Land, and therefore will have two years of eligibility with VU starting in 2011. Brown said Gueye, who played in the Chicagohoops.com event in Merrillville this month, is "built like Dwight Howard." He said he fits the VU mold of a big man who can shoot from the outside. "For a 7-footer, he's really versatile," Brown said. "Up until three or four years ago, he was only about 6-3 or 6-4, so he has guatd skills. He shoots it really well from the perimeter for a big man, he runs the floor relaly well, he can block shots. He's a really versatile young man and a great addition to my program. I'm really pleased the coaching staff at Valpo turned him on to me and trusted me with the opportunity to work with him for a couple of years. He's been a wonderful person to work with, he's a great kid, always has a smile on his face, works really hard." blogs.post-trib.com/lazerus/2009/07/valparaiso-gets-commitment-fro.html

Aug 1, 2009 Darnell Archey Returns To Butler Basketball ProgramDarnell Archey, who enjoyed a record-setting career as a player with the Bulldogs, has returned to the Butler basketball program as Coordinator of Basketball Operations. The former sharp-shooting guard, who’s been coaching high school basketball, is replacing Kevin Kuwik on the Butler staff. “We’re thrilled to welcome Darnell back to our program,” said Butler head coach Brad Stevens. “He has a great passion for Butler, and he’ll be a tremendous addition to our staff.” Archey helped the Bulldogs to 100 wins during his four-year career as a player, 1999-2003. He finished his career as Butler’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, and he currently stands third on Butler’s all-time list for three-pointers (217). He further set an NCAA Division I record for consecutive free throws made (85), and he finished with Butler single season (.973 in 2002-03) and career (.951) records for free throw percentage. A native of New Castle, Ind., Archey is one of just four players in Butler history to contribute to 100 victories. Each year that he played, the Bulldogs tied or set a school record for victories, capped by a 27-6 mark and a run to the NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16” in 2002-03. He sparked Butler’s second-round tournament win over #14 Louisville, 79-71, that season by hitting eight of nine three-point field goal attempts and scoring 26 points in the victory! Following his senior season, he won the Men’s Collegiate Three-Point Championship at the Final Four “The main thing that attracted me to this position was Butler,” said Archey, who earned his Butler degree in marketing/business. “I have a lot of great memories here. I love the family atmosphere; the way everyone here cares about each other, and I’m glad to be part of that again. The same things that we were taught when I was a player are being taught here now, and those are values that I embrace.” Archey is joining the Butler staff after spending last season as varsity basketball coach at Park Tudor High School. He also served as head coach at Columbus North High School (2006-08), as head junior varsity coach at Carmel High School (2005-06) and varsity assistant coach at Carmel (2004-05). In 2003-04, he played briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters and had a stint with a touring Australian basketball club. butlersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/2009-10/releases/080109aaa

The game was the second of four on a tour of Italy by the Bulldogs, who traveled after the game to Venice. Their next game is Monday in Rome. Switzerland beat Butler 76-72 Thursday. Sefolosha, 25, plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Butler center Matt Howard left in the second quarter of today's game after injuring his ankle or foot. He did not return. Switzerland led at the end of every quarter: 26-23, 46-45, 70-65, 100-90. Shelvin Mack added 16 points. Joe Latas To Play During All-Star Tour of Europe Aug. 2, 2009 CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sophomore center Joe Latas, the only returning post player on the Viking basketball team this season, will play five games in Prague in the Czech Republic and Vienna in Austria this month as part of a tour with the East Coast All-Stars. "This is going to be a great opportunity for me," Latas said. "We toured overseas one summer when I was in high school and then we went to Spain as a team last summer so I am used to the international style of play. "The best part is I will be playing with a lot of Big East players which will help me to improve my game. The competition will also be at the top level because we are only playing national teams and the top pro clubs." The tour begins on Aug. 2 when Latas reports to Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA to for a one-day practice session. The following day (Aug. 3), the team will train in Madison Square Garden before catching a flight to Prague. After taking a day to orient themselves, the team will play games on Aug. 5 & 6 in Prague before heading to Austria on Aug. 7. The playing schedule in Vienna includes games on Aug. 8, 9 & 10 with the group returning to the United States on Aug. 12. All five games during the tour will be against either the national teams from the respective countries or top division club squads. Latas will be joined on the East Coast All-Star roster by Cam Thoroughman and Darryl Bryant from West Virginia, Jacob Pullen and Dominique Sutton from Kansas State, Patrick Jackson and Corey Chandler from Rutgers and Lycoming's Michael Bradley and James Oberlies. Rounding out the roster is Arjun Ohri (Polytechnic), Chris Kehoe (Connecticut College) and Latas. At 6-11, Latas is the lone player over 6-7 on the East Coast All-Star roster. This should be an interesting season for Latas, a native of North Olmsted, OH, who came off the bench in 16 games, averaging 1,4 points and 0.4 rebounds a game. When he arrived at CSU in the fall of 2007, he weighed over 300 pounds and lacked the stamina to see significant minutes in the Viking's up-tempo style. Through hard work, he has trimmed at least 30 pounds off his frame, worked hard in the weight room to improve his strength and body style and begins the year battling for playing time against as many as five first-year players. "Joe committed himself over the last two years to do the things that he needed to get himself into shape so that he could play and I an impressed with the results," CSU head coach Gary Waters said. "This tour will be good for him because he will be playing both with and against some pretty competition and that will help him to prepare for the upcoming season." Latas will return to Cleveland State in mid-August for the start of fall semester with the start of preseason basketball practice on Oct. 16. www.csuvikings.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/080209aaa.html

This sucks. How is Detroit able to add big man after big man? They are coming off of back to back years where they didn't even win 10 games. we are coming off of back to back to back 20 win seasons. Why do we have so much trouble signing post players when other horizon league teams can sign them?

August 8, 2009 Dawgs enduring adversity in Italy-- Lose two in a row soon after arrival. -- Allow 100 points. -- Lose Matt Howard, the Horizon League Player of the Year, to injury. The Swiss national team, led by 30 points from NBA player Thabo Sefolosha, beat Butler 100-90 Friday in a basketball exhibition at Como, Italy. That followed Switzerland's 76-72 victory Thursday. Gordon Hayward led Butler with 27 points, equaling his biggest output of the college season. The Bulldogs are to play a pro "B" team Monday in Rome. Howard left in the second quarter Friday after injuring his ankle or foot. He did not return, and his status is uncertain for the remaining two games on the trip. Although these games are exhibitions, it is revealing to note that Butler had not allowed 100 points since a 107-97 loss to Illinois-Chicago in 1996 Midwestern Collegiate Conference tournament. (That was a painful loss for Butler, which was a No. 2 seed in the tournament and coming off a 73-66 overtime loss at 25th-ranked Green Bay.) And, of course, Butler has lost four in a row dating to the end of the college season. It will be interesting to hear the assessment of the trip after players and coaches return. They might mention the games only in passing because the cultural and educational components of this trip will exceed anything learned on the court. Still, the time spent together and employment of unusual lineups almost certainly will help the Bulldogs in upcoming months. Also, let's not dismiss the Swiss. A national team with older players who have been practicing together, featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder's Sefolosha, would be a tough assignment for any NCAA team -- especially after long travel. Assistant coach Matthew Graves, who is filing reports from Italy, suggested the quick turnaround from Thursday affected the Bulldogs' defensive effort. The Swiss led at the end of each quarter: 26-23, 46-45, 70-65, 100-90. Butler scoring: Gordon Hayward 27, Shelvin Mack 16, Shawn Vanzant 12, Avery Jukes 11, Chase Stigall 6, Garrett Butcher 6, Matt Howard 4, Willie Veasley 4, Alex Anglin 3, Zach Hahn 1. After the game, the team traveled about five hours to Venice, stopping for dinner in Verona for two hours. The team was to tour Venice on Saturday and Florence on Sunday before Monday's game in Rome. blogs.indystar.com/butler/2009/08/this_is_obviously_not_what.html

Butler's board said it was a slight ankle sprain and that he would have played if it was a real game. He should be 100% by the start of the season.

Panther notebook (8/17) Just a few odds and ends as the team prepares for the start of full-fledged conditioning ... ... The Panthers remain in pursuit of two games for the coming year, both of them to be played at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The hope is that neither opponent will be Division 2, but Milwaukee needs a team against whom to open the season before it leaves for Baton Rouge on Nov. 15. The preferred date is Nov. 13. ... Two seeded teams in the NIT Season Tip-Off, seventh-seeded TCU (14-17) and eighth-seeded Charlotte (11-20), will serve as probable hosts of third- and fourth-round games while Milwaukee (17-14, with wins over Bradley, Butler, Cleveland State and Wright State) will travel if it loses in either of the first two rounds. ... The Panthers had discussions with both Utah State and Siena for 2009-10 games at The Cell, but neither could work out dates with Milwaukee. The Aggies had Nov. 16 and Nov. 21 available, but the Panthers did not (Nov. 16 vs. Western Kentucky; Nov. 21 at Bowling Green). The Saints were willing to play Milwaukee on Dec. 14, but insisted that the series start in Albany, N.Y. This would have left the Panthers with just 12 home dates, including conference games, for the coming season. ... Ja' Rob McCallum and Jerard Ajami continue to excel and both are in line for significant playing time in the coming year. Ja' Rob (6-1, 168 pounds) grades high in ball-handling, shooting and court presence, while Jerard (6-3, 200) is a sharpshooter and physical defender who handles the ball adequately in the halfcourt. Because of their shooting and savvy, they undeniably rate as the team's third- and fourth-best guards. ... With the addition of walkon Quinton Gustavson (6-9, 200) from Racine Case, the Panthers now have 10 players on the 18-man roster (seven active) who stand 6-6 or taller. More impressively, 15 team members weigh 200 pounds or more (all but Ja' Rob, 168; Tone, 195; and walkon Patrick Souter, 170), a credit to the team's weight-training program. By comparison, the next-biggest teams in the Horizon League -- Butler, Green Bay, Loyola and Valpo -- all have seven players who weigh 200 or more pounds. Panther guards average 6-1 1/2, 195 pounds. ... The Panthers hope to add at least two players for the Class of 2010, a "big" and a point guard. They remain in pursuit of Kyle Kelm of Randolph and the Swing U-17 Selk team and a couple of unidentified junior-college players. We'll find out more soon. ... The team opens preseason training camp on Sept. 2, the first day of school, with running at the hill at St. Mary's to commence on Sept. 3. As usual, the team will begin with 10 sprints up the hill and end six weeks later with 22 climbs. This not only tests a player's physical condition, but more importantly tests his mental toughness and his diet, which is discovered early in the process. uwmfreak.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Games&action=display&thread=4763
