UIC Names Mark Miller Assistant Men's Basketball CoachAug. 19, 2009 CHICAGO- UIC head men's basketball coach Jimmy Collins announced on Wednesday, August 19 that Mark Miller, one of the greatest players to ever don a Flames uniform, has returned to UIC as an assistant coach. Miller fills the void left by Mark Coomes, who retired this past spring after 13 years on the Flames' staff. "I am very, very happy to have Mark Miller join our staff," said Collins. "He was a tremendous competitor when he played for us. He knows the game of basketball very well and he has wanted to be a part of UIC ever since graduation. We're extremely happy to have Mark back representing this University." "I am excited to return to my alma mater as an assistant coach, and I can't think of a better program to begin my collegiate coaching career," said Miller. "I look forward to working with the team so that they can be put in a position to continue the level of success I achieved on and off the court as a UIC Flame." Miller played for the Flames from 1995-98, earning All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors each season. In 1997-98 he averaged 19.7 points per game en route to All-MCC First Team accolades and the MCC Player of the Year award, helping the Flames punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history that season. In three seasons Miller scored 1,458 points in 84 games for a career average of 17.4 points per game. He is the school's ninth all-time leading scorer and, along with Sherell Ford, is one of only two UIC men's basketball players to have his jersey number retired. A banner bearing his retired number 12 hangs at the UIC Pavilion. Miller, who was inducted into the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003, went on to play professionally in six different countries. He earned German League Player of the Year honors in 2000, among his many pro accolades. Prior to his decorated UIC career, Miller was a standout for Chicago prep power Westinghouse. As a senior in 1993-94, Miller was a Chicago Sun-Times All-Area pick, a Chicago Tribune All-State Second Teamer, an All-Chicago Public League First Teamer, and the MVP of the Public League's Red West Division. A national Top 100 recruit in 1994, Miller was also the MVP of the City-Suburban All-Star Game that year while leading Westinghouse to a city title over the nation's top-ranked team at the time, King High School. uicflames.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=2225

The 6-foot-9 forward from Somerset completed his UWGB career earlier this year with 1,667 points. He also is the Phoenix's career free-throw percentage leader at 88.3 percent and a three-time academic all-America selection. Schachtner, 22, signed an eight-month contract with Kapfenberg and will travel to Europe today, according to the New Richmond News. He'll begin practice with the Bulls on Monday. Schachtner told the New Richmond newspaper that he also considered teams from Holland and Turkey, but thought he fit best with Kapfenberg. He is the second UWGB player to sign with a European team this week. Kati Harty, a guard for the women's team, will play for the ProBuild Lions in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20090822/GPG020101/908220507/1229/UWGB-men-s-basketball--Schachtner-signs-with-Austrian-team

Keeling, Holman Pace Titans To Second Straight Win In Spain 8/22/2009 Led by Xavier Keeling's 21 points and Eli Holman's 20, the Detroit Titans notched their second consecutive win of the exhibition tour in Spain, 97-48 over Girona on Saturday. Holman was also dynamic on the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds, while also blocking eight shots. Four other Titans scored in double digits including Thomas Kennedy with 16 points, Chase Simon and Eulis Stephens with 13 each and Donavan Foster, who had 10. "I thought Girona was a much better team and they were more talented then the previous team we played (Club Basquet Nevas),” Kennedy said. “We outhustled them and we had more scorers then they did, but all in all they were great competition even if the score says differently." “We make plays off of our defense,” Stephens added. “We are a pretty good defensive team and I believe that the road to a championship starts with defense. We have a lot of scorers and on any given night one of us will go off." Assistant coach Derek Thomas liked the way the Titans took the play to the Spanish team on Saturday. "I thought both teams played well in the first quarter, but our conditioning and aggressive play took over in the second and third quarters and that really led us to victory,” coach Thomas said. “I thought our inside game really hurt them. We penetrated and drove the ball well, which allowed us to go to the line and shoot some free throws." Tomorrow is a day off for the Titans that will culminate in a bull fight at the stadium in Barcelona. Detroit’s next game is on Tuesday against Calpe. www.detroittitans.com/news/2009/8/22/MBB_0822095917.aspx

UIC Men's Basketball Unveils 2009-10 Roster 6-foot-11 junior college transfer Kyle Robbins headlines newest additions.Aug. 25, 2009 CHICAGO- With the first week of classes now in full swing, UIC head men's basketball coach Jimmy Collins revealed the Flames' 2009-10 roster on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Collins announced that 6-foot-11 center Kyle Robbins (Falmouth, Maine/Cheverus H.S./Southwestern Illinois College) has signed with the Flames and will play beginning this fall. Robbins began his collegiate career at Vermont before transferring to Southwestern Illinois in Belleville. "Kyle has a big body with great hands and great offensive tendencies," said Collins. "He is very sound fundamentally. We're looking forward to working with him and helping him, and us, plug our paint up." Collins and his staff also unveiled five new walk-ons: 6-foot guard Arthur Wiley (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood H.S.), 6-foot-3 guard Erin Pryor (Chicago, Ill./King College Prep), 6-foot-5 forward Mylin Northern (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood Academy/Triton College), 5-foot-10 guard Corey Gray (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower H.S.) and 6-foot-4 guard Matt Bush (Quincy, Ill./Quincy H.S./Black Hawk College). The six latest additions join a 2009-10 rookie class that already includes 6-foot-9 center Louis Green (Hillside, Ill./St. Joseph H.S.), 6-foot-7 forward Brad Birton (Chicago, Ill./North Lawndale College Prep/South Suburban College), and 6-foot-5 guard Anthony Kelley (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic H.S.). "I really like the balance of this roster," said Collins. "With veteran leadership from Robo Kreps, Spencer Stewart and Jeremy Buttell to go along with the needed additions of athleticism from Brad Birton, Louis Green and others, we have a good mix of guys who will really work to be successful." Collins also announced that junior forward Tori Boyd and fifth-year senior forward Jovan Ignjatovic have decided to forego their remaining collegiate athletic eligibility to pursue other interests. Both will remain at UIC to complete their degrees. "I want Tori to succeed in any endeavor he chooses," said Collins. "If his real interest is anything he works towards, he will be successful. "I have always said that Iggy was one of our most skilled big men, and we will miss him," said Collins. "We wish both Iggy and Tori the best in their future endeavors as they stay at UIC to finish their education." In addition, senior forward Rob Eppinger and freshman forward DeMarkus Isom-Jones have left the University for personal reasons. www.uicflames.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/082509aaa.htmlNew assistant coach and the departures Boyd, Eppinger and Jovan Ignjatovic create quite a change for UIC. With the graduation losses of Mayo and VanderMeer. UIC is losing 63% of their scoring from last year and over 53% of their rebounding. They are going to need some people to step up big time just to have a respectable season. Maybe one of their 5 walk-ons can actually play. I think Jimmy Collins has reached the end of his rope there.
