October 7, 2008 Picking Wright State over Cleveland StateThe Horizon League preseason basketball poll was announced today with no surprises. Well, maybe one surprise. Three voters actually picked Butler to win the league. The Bulldogs were fifth in a poll of coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. Wright State has such an outstanding coach, Brad Brownell, that I give the Raiders a slight edge over Cleveland State. I still believe Indiana University would have been better served to hire Brownell instead of Tom Crean. Kentucky should have hired Brownell the year before, for that matter. In any case, Brownell was wise to choose Wright State over Ball State, which is still digging out of the crater left by Ronny Thompson. Butler is perhaps the most difficult team to evaluate in the preseason. Its system is proven, but the young players are not. Practice starts Oct. 17, and the first preseason game is Nov. 1 against Marian College. The Bulldogs open league play Dec. 4 at Cleveland State, a tough assignment for an inexperienced team. After all, last season's 30-win team lost there. On the other hand, the pressure would be on Cleveland State. If Butler were to pull an upset there, imagine the panic that would spread throughout the Horizon. blogs.indystar.com/butler/2008/10/picking_wright_state_over_clev.html

wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/100808aaf.htmlRaiders Receive One First-Place Vote The Wright State women's basketball team was picked second in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, which was released Wednesday by the league office. Voting was conducted by the head coaches and sports information directors of all 10 universities along with a media member from each. The Raiders finished 16-16 overall last season and tied for second in the League standings with a mark of 11-7. WSU also advanced to the League championship game for the second time in five years. It's just the second time that Wright State has been picked higher than fifth in a preseason poll as the Raiders were also predicted to finish second in the 2005-06 poll. "We are very thrilled about the selection," said Wright State head coach Bridgett Williams. "To be picked second is quite an honor because they are many tough teams in the Horizon League that could have been considered as well. It will be a challenge for us to play up to that honor." 10-time regular-season champion Green Bay was the preseason top pick with Wright State one point ahead of third-place Milwaukee. The Raiders return nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad, led by sophomore guard Shey Peddy, who was a First Team All-Horizon League selection last season as well as being named the League's Newcomer of the Year and to the All-Defensive Team. Peddy, who ranked third among all freshmen nationally in scoring (16.7), also appeared in the national rankings in steals per game (3.2) and field goal percentage (.539). Sophomore guard LaShawna Thomas also returns after joining Peddy on the All-Newcomer Team last season. Thomas, who missed the first six games and did not start until the ninth contest due to injury, still averaged 11.4 points per game as she scored 18 or more points in a game four times. She also averaged 3.2 rebounds and two assists per game. Wright State opens the exhibition season on Wednesday, November 12, against Findlay at the Nutter Center. The regular season opener is on Saturday, November 22 at Evansville with the home opener set for Tuesday, December 2, against Miami.
