Raiders get game play in controlled setting

Closed, controlled scrimmages are great, Wright State basketball coach Brad Brownell said, because a team can work on its plays, "without having to worry if you're winning a game."
For the third straight year today, Nov. 1, the Raiders will scrimmage Eastern Kentucky under NCAA-mandated regulations — no media, no fans, no visitors.
Teams are given four hours and while scorebooks are kept, no scoreboards are turned on, other than for the time of play.
"It's good," Brownell said, "because you can call as many timeouts as you want and give your team immediate feedback without concern for the score. You get to try different lineups and you can play a lot of different kids."
Injuries a problem
Although there have yet to be any major injuries, the Raiders have yet to have a complete roster for practice. Many days, there are two or more players out.
The latest is junior guard John David Gardner and sophomores Cooper Land and N'Gai Evans. The latter two sprained ankles earlier this week.
Gardner's problem might be more serious. He has had foot problems dating to his time at North Carolina-Wilmington, where he also played for Brownell.
After transferring and sitting out a year, Gardner was a key reserve on last season's WSU team until he injured his foot again in a midseason tournament at Chattanooga (Tenn.). He was still nursing his foot a bit when practice began two weeks ago, but seemed fine until his hip began bothering him, which may be related to his foot.
Gardner — and Brownell — are hoping for the best.
"He doesn't deserve this," Brownell said. "He's a good kid, and he's one of the toughest kids on the team."
Video to watch
All the players were filmed for cameo videos to be used on the DaytonDailyNews.com Web site during the season, and those brave enough to act out favorite scenes from favorite movies drew plenty of laughs from teammates. A few even sang parts of their favorite songs.
Do not miss sophomore guard Troy Tabler's re-enactment from a scene in "Old School."
Live tune-in shows
In addition to the oncoming games, the coaches' radio shows are also returning, with WONE-AM (980) and WIZE-AM (1340) carrying both the Brownell (12 shows from 7 to 8 p.m.) and Bridgett Williams (six shows from 8 to 8:30 p.m.) women's show beginning Nov. 17.
All the shows originate live from Fricker's Restaurant on Woodman Dr. and all will be on Monday except for the Nov. 25 show. After that, the shows will be once a week for the men and a little more spaced for the women.
