No. 19 Gators open with 80-58 win over ToledoBy MARK LONG, AP Sports Writer With stories about his online gambling debt circulating, Nick Calathes easily could have been distracted. He seemed unworried. Calathes had 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals, Dan Werner added 19 points and No. 19 Florida opened the season with an 80-58 victory over Toledo on Friday night. “I don’t think it fazed him at all,” teammate Chandler Parsons said. “None of that stuff is true. He didn’t let it affect him.” The Gators, trying to rebound from missing the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade, won their 18th consecutive season opener and improved to 51-6 under coach Billy Donovan in November. More importantly, Florida looked much improved on defense. The Gators, who finished 10th in the Southeastern Conference in field-goal defense and ninth in rebounding last season, forced four 10-second violations and held the Rockets to 43.8 percent shooting. Jonathan Amos led Toledo with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. Calathes was Florida’s catalyst, despite a potential distraction. Calathes acknowledged truth to a story first reported by Yahoo.com that said he ran up a $600 debt playing poker online, but was adamant he did nothing illegal. Donovan and athletic director Jeremy Foley agreed. Calathes said he wasn’t sure how much money he owed. “I lost money,” Calathes said. “I really don’t know how much.” Donovan said he heard rumors about Calathes’ gambling debt, but an investigation by the school’s athletic department found no evidence of wrongdoing. “The only thing I’m going to say about any of that stuff is the unfortunate part in all this is nobody on our team has done anything wrong,” Donovan said. “It’s amazing to me that stories can actually be written or talked about when someone’s done nothing wrong. “We heard the rumors and we reacted to the rumors, responded to them, talked to Nick, talked to the team … handled the whole situation. To me, it’s not even a story. There’s no story. Nobody did anything wrong.” Foley said he was confident that Florida had “no eligibility issues” regarding the matter. Calathes was in the starting lineup against Toledo, which kept it close for most of the first half—until Florida began making 3-pointers. The Gators missed their first eight shots from behind the arc, then reeled off four in row to spark a 16-2 run that started with about 3:30 to play and spanned halftime. Allan Chaney, one of four freshmen making their official debut for the Gators, started the 3-point barrage. Walter Hodge, Calathes and Werner followed. The Gators finished 7-of-19 from 3-point range and shot 53 percent from the floor. They were even better on defense, successfully pressing, forcing 25 turnovers and finishing with 12 steals. “I don’t know if we’re going to be able to press everybody like we did tonight, but I think the difference in the game for us was the pressure up the floor and forcing 25 turnovers,” Donovan said. The press helped the Gators build a 56-31 early in the second half, and they cruised from there even with Adam Allen (knee) and Eloy Vargas (ankle) sitting out with injuries. “Their full-court pressure was tremendous,” Toledo coach Gene Cross said. “You can’t turn the ball over against teams and expect to win the game.” rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recap?gid=200811140210

Raymond leads Xavier over Toledo 81-65By JOE KAY, AP Sports Writer B.J. Raymond scored 18 points, hitting all four of his shots from behind the extended 3-point arc, and Xavier’s young lineup made a dozen early turnovers Monday night before settling down and pulling away to an 81-65 victory over Toledo. Xavier (2-0) dominated the boards and shut down Toledo’s guards, but kept it close by turning the ball over 12 times in the first 12 minutes. Toledo (0-2) led the Mid-American Conference in steals last season, and had eight overall. A pair of dunks by Jamel McLean started a 21-4 run that put the Musketeers up 36-19 at halftime. Xavier has held both of its opponents under 20 points in the first half—IPFW managed only 14. Raymond opened the second half by hitting a pair of shots from behind the arc, which was pushed back a foot this season. Xavier led by as many as 23 before Tyrone Kent led a Rockets rally in the closing minutes. Kent, who led the MAC in scoring last season, had a career-high 37 points, going 11-for-20 from the field. rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recap?gid=200811170682

We need to get things back on track. I see Toledo going down hard on Tuesday. I don't know about going down hard, but I do think we are going to beat Toledo. I sure hope the UWM game was Todd's coming out party. We could sure use 10 points and 7 boards from him every night.

Despite losses, Raiders are making some improvementsBy Marc Katz Sunday, December 07, 2008 FAIRBORN — Winless so far, the Raiders are improving with good efforts at Wisconsin-Green Bay last Thursday and at Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday. There's still that 0-6 record, but guards John David Gardner and N'Gai Evans seem to play better every game and junior guard Todd Brown is working hard to regain his shooting touch. There are plenty of upcoming games to begin a turnaround. Upcoming games: Tuesday home to Toledo, 7 p.m.; Friday at Arkansas-Little Rock, 8 p.m.; Sunday at Wake Forest, 4 p.m., FSN. Scouting Toledo: Rockets are just 2-6 after losing 67-58 at Oakland, Mich., Sunday afternoon, but their victory over UMass was the only game played at home so far. Tyrone Kent (16.9) is leading the team in scoring, but came off the bench Sunday. Jonathan Amos is at 10.8 points. While Savage Arena underwent a face-lift from last season, the team is being remade under new coach Gene Cross, after last season's Rockets finished with a losing record (11-19) for the first time in five years. Scouting Arkansas-Little Rock: Coming off a 20-11 season, the Trojans' first 20-win season since 1995-96. This year, the Trojans are 5-1 with a game at Oral Roberts tonight, which means the Raiders get to watch two of the teams they'll play in one tape. WSU opens the San Juan Shootout on Dec. 20 with Oral Roberts. Little Rock is coming off its worst game, losing at Missouri State, 59-37. In that game, LR shot just 23.4 percent from the field, just 12.5 percent in the second half. Still, three players are scoring in double figures, including sophomore Matt Mouzy (14.2), junior Steven Moore (12.0) and senior John Fowler (10.7). Scouting Wake Forest: Raiders wanted a game against a top-ranked team, and got one, on Fox Sports Net no less. Demon Deacons are ranked No. 15 in the country and are 8-0 with the entire week to prepare for WSU. Jeff Teague leads the team with a 20.6 scoring average, followed by James Johnson (14.8) and Al-Farouq Aminu (12.3). Demon Deacons are averaging 45 rebounds a game and are shooting 51.7 percent. Facts, figures: The 0-6 start is the worst ever for the team in Division I, but the 1996-97 team started 1-6 after beating Thomas More in first game. The Raiders picked up their shooting in the second half at Milwaukee, but still have to find someone to take the place of Vaughn Duggins, who will be out at least the rest of the month with a broken finger. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2008/12/07/ddn120808spraiderconnection.html?cxntnid=rc-120808
