We are 6-1 in our last 7 games. Even though our defense has been outstanding over that stretch I'd like to point to several players that have really stepped it up and has put the team on their shoulders and is one of the main reasons we have turned this season around. In coach Brownell's post game interview today he said that with the exception of a couple of players we really don't have any stars. He said that our starting five usually isn't better then the other teams starting five but that we have more depth then most teams and he hopes to exploit that advantage.
I believe it was Klinger who pointed out that in the Wake Forest game only John David and Cory Cooperwood looked like they belonged on the floor with the Wake Forest players. I agree 100% with that observation. I think we need to build around these two guys plus Vaughn when he returns to form a solid foundation to compete in league play.
Cory Cooperwood in his last seven games has averaged 10.5 ppg and 4.2 rpg. I think Cory most valuable asset is his hustle and aggressive style of play. I feel like the other players on the team kinda feed off of his energy.
John David Gardner in his last seven games has averaged 11.7 ppg and 4.1 asset. He seems to have brought stability to the team since he has started running the point. I feel like John David has become the floor leader and I think this team desperately needed a leader on the floor.
Hopefully we have witnessed Todd Brown's coming out party in San Juan. In the tournament Todd averaged 9 ppg and 6 rpg. If Todd can maintain even this level of play it give us another legitimate scorer.
When you add Vaughn back into the mix we now have three consistent scorers and possibly four if Todd can continue his play from San Juan. What makes this exciting is that all four of them are also solid defenders with John David and Vaughn being exceptional defenders.
I look for these three/four to carry us into the upper echelon of the Horizon League and with our deep bench we can bring a lot of folks at our opponents.
When Vaughn returns our starting five should be very solid.
Point guard - John David
Two guard - Vaughn Duggins
Wing - Todd Brown
Power forward - Cory Cooperwood
Center - Ronnie Thomas
I see both John David and Vaughn logging 30 plus minutes with coach Brownell rotation guys in at the other three positions. Cory probably needs to play 26 or so minutes a game.
I think it was BigD who said that losing Vaughn might end up being a benefit in the long run because it will kinda force other players to step up and not just rely on Vaughn to do everything. Well I would say that is exactly what is happening in Vaughn's absence!
We have a huge game against Cleveland State and we can't afford a league home lose so let's hope we find a way to win on the 30th.
