The worst part of all of this is that it is going to kill our recruiting effort for the spring signing period until Xavier names a coach or Brownell says he isn't interested. Spring signing period starts next Wednesday, April 15. The timing of this does suck, but listening to this crap every spring is even worse. I'm to the point where I don't really care if he leaves anymore. I hate that he won't just come out and say if he is interested or not. Spring recruiting is killed every year because he won't just make a definitive statement to his interest in another job. Other coaches use that against us in recruiting. I'm sick of it. Welcome to the world of a successful mid-major program.

Which coaches do you think have used that against Wright State?

I know for a fact that Miami (OH) and Ohio Universsity's coaching staff have told recruits that they don't want to sign with WSU because Brownell won't be here to see them graduate. I'm sure there are others.

That's a pretty common practice among college recruiters. Unfortunately, if it wasn't a true concern, coaches couldn't use it against one another.
When all is said and done, Brownell will do what's best for him. WSU will be just fine, either with Donlon or whoever else we pursue as our next coach.

April 6, 2009 Coach Hamilton staying at FSUTALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Leonard Hamilton is staying at Florida State after agreeing to a new five-year deal. Hamilton, 60, had visited with Memphis officials about the opening there created by John Calipari's departure to Kentucky last week. Terms of the new pact were still being finalized Monday. "We are very anxious to keep moving ahead as we take the program to higher heights and continue to make Florida State basketball a program of significance both nationally and in the ACC," Hamilton said. Hamilton is 131-96 in seven seasons at Florida State after taking the school to its first NCAA tournament bid in 11 years. The Seminoles also defeated North Carolina last month to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament finals for the first time. The Florida State program under Hamilton has had a 100 percent graduation rate and the school was one of just seven schools that played in the NCAA tournament this year with that distinction. Hamilton returns with three starters from this year's team, but loses starting guard Toney Douglas, who set a new single season scoring record this season. "The future is very bright for our program," said Hamilton, who inherited a program that had won just 46 games in the four seasons before his arrival. Florida State has won 20 or more games in three of the last four seasons. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4047494

April 6, 2009 Memphis goes with PastnerAssistant coach Josh Pastner will be named the next head coach at the school at a news conference at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Memphis athletics spokesman Bob Winn said on Monday. Pastner, 31, replaces John Calipari who became the head coach at Kentucky last week. A source close to the Memphis program told ESPN.com that Memphis turned to Pastner to ensure continuity in the program after Calipari's success and subsequent departure. This is Pastner's first head coaching job. He was a walk-on at Arizona on the 1997 national championship team and after graduation worked his way up on the bench with Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson. Pastner was the lead recruiter for the Wildcats in Olson's last season two years ago and the top assistant for interim coach Kevin O'Neil during the 2007-08 campaign. Last summer Pastner left Arizona to work for Calipari. According to the source, the school did inquire into the availability of Massachusetts head coach Derek Kellogg who was an assistant for Calipari at Memphis, but he just completed his first season at his alma mater. Memphis made overture's to USC's Tim Floyd, Missouri's Mike Anderson, former Xavier coach Sean Miller -- who took the Arizona job -- and most recently Florida State's Leonard Hamilton. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4047664

Brad is not a good fit for Xavier. Brad likes to grind out wins 45-40. Xavier is looking for an uptempo coach. Brad would be horrible fit for the returning players at Xavier. I agree. I think Xavier will stay in house and hire one of their assistants. That being said, I think Brad would take the Xavier job if offered.

sixthman, you are either way, way overestimating our program and our team for next year, or way, way underestimating xavier's program and their team for next year. x is one of 3-4 teams from non bcs conferences that are lumped in with and compete evenly with bcs teams. x, gonzaga, memphis come to mind. all have been in top 20 on a regular basis for a number of years. next year they are projected as in the hunt for the final 4. we have not been in the postseason for two years and only once in what, 15 years. the difference between us and x is way greater than between us and many bcs teams. it would be a huge step up for a coach. i sure hope our coach does not get the offer because i bet he would take it. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!1

GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!1 Keith, I wasn't trying to compare teams next year. I was comparing job opportunities and salaries. WSU is paying Brownell 385K this year. Xavier was playing Miller 850K last year. They started him at 500K when they hired him. That isn't that much of a jump over what Brownell makes now. Even if they give Brownell the same money (850K) Miller was making, he can do much better at a BCS program if he is patient and waits another year or 2 at WSU. Most of the BCS jobs that were filled this year have been for 1.5 to 2.0 million. I think he would be smart to have a big year this year at WSU and go for the big bucks. If he goes to Xavier, I think he will have to stay there at least a few years before he jumps ship for a BCS opening. If he leaves Xavier too fast he will just look like a mercenary out for the biggest paycheck. In the long run, I think it makes more sense for him to stay another year or 2 to get his ideal job offer.

USC's Horn a candidate for Xavier coaching positionApril 7, 2009 COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - USC Mens' Basketball Coach Darrin Horn is being mentioned as a possible candidate for the Xavier vacancy. Jeff Goodman of FOXsports.com writes that sources indicate Xavier wants to speak with Horn about the opening. Will Horn want to leave South Carolina after just one season? He led Carolina to a 21 - 10 record and a share of the SEC East title. On the other hand, why would he consider Xavier? It's a lot closer to his Lexington, Kentucky home and they've had a lot of success in recent years. USC Sports Information Director Steve Fink says that normally Athletics Director Eric Hyman doesn't comment on such personnel matters. www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=10145810&nav=0RaP

WSU's Brownell in Xavier coaching talkBy Marc Katz Wednesday, April 08, 2009 Wright State coach Brad Brownell argues a call during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Butler at the Horizon League Conference men's tournament in Indianapolis, Saturday, March 7.Click to enlargeFAIRBORN — Wright State basketball coach Brad Brownell's name has been linked to the vacant Xavier job, but the Raiders coach was more concerned with managing his players' individual workouts Tuesday, April 7. "I'm not going to talk about other jobs," Brownell said. "I'm very happy at Wright State. I'm excited about what we've been able to do here. "It's always flattering to have your name mentioned for jobs. At the same time, I'm happy here and I'm not going to talk about it (Xavier)." The Xavier job opened Monday morning when Sean Miller was lured to Arizona. In Cincinnati, Brownell's name is making the media rounds as one that should be considered. The Cincinnati Enquirer included him in a list of eight potential coaches. An Enquirer online poll has five-year Xavier assistant Chris Mack — a former Xavier player — as the public's favorite. Butler's Brad Stevens also is on the list. The coach previous to Miller was Thad Matta, who came from Butler and now is at Ohio State. "A lot of stuff that's out there is not accurate," said Brownell, who wouldn't say whether he would be interested in the Xavier job. Miller reportedly was paid a $1 million per year contract there and Brownell is being paid $365,000 at WSU, where he has five years left on his contract. "My name has been linked to a number of jobs." Brownell is 64-33 in three WSU seasons, leading the team to three straight 20-win seasons. After each of his previous two seasons at WSU, Brownell's name was mentioned for other jobs, most prominently at Indiana after last season. He was said to be the next in line to coach the Hoosiers had Marquette's Tom Crean turned down that job. Crean went to Indiana, and Brownell remains at Wright State — for now. www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/college/wsu/2009/04/08/ddn040809spwsubb.html
