WSU dumps Miami, will face Xavier in Nuxhall Classic Finals Wednesday, April 15, 2009 CINCINNATI — Kim Nuxhall joked that he might need surgery on his right arm following all of the ceremonial first pitches he has delivered since his father — Cincinnati Reds legend Joe Nuxhall — passed away 17 months ago. “My arm’s getting a little sore,” Kim said following his latest pitch, which he delivered Tuesday, April 14, from the mound of the University of Cincinnati’s Marge Schott Stadium, where UC, Xavier, Miami and Wright State took part in the inaugural Joe Nuxhall Classic. Kim said he has lost track of the number of ceremonies he’s been invited to be a part of the last year and a half. But while the art of pitching a baseball has become routine, the requests to do so remain anything but. “It continues to amaze me that it’s been over a year and we’re still thinking about dad and keeping his legacy going,” Kim said. “The neat thing about this one is that it brings baseball and college student-athletes together, which was something dad really emphasized and talked to kids about wherever he went, the importance of getting your education.” Miami and Wright State kicked off the event, with the Raiders scoring a 7-3 victory. That was followed by a ceremony that featured a videotaped message from Joe Nuxhall’s broadcast partner and friend, Marty Brennaman, and Kim’s first pitch. And then in the nightcap, Xavier beat Cincinnati 12-8. “I think this is a terrific event, and I’m glad we’re part of it,” said MU coach Dan Simonds, who no doubt would much rather be a part of today’s 3 p.m. championship game against Xavier instead of tonight’s 7 p.m. consolation game against UC. But the RedHawks (16-15) find themselves in the early game because they failed to fully capitalize on a pair of great opportunities against the Raiders (16-19). “We had bases loaded with no outs twice and only got one run each time,” Simonds said, referring to the third and seventh innings. “We’ve got to be able to capitalize more in those situations and score runs.” Wright State collected 14 hits against seven MU pitchers. Jeff Mercer led the way with a 3-for-5 day that included a pair of doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. “This was a big game for us,” Mercer said. “Not just for bragging rights because these teams are all close to us, but we’ve struggled the past two weeks and that makes every game important as we try to get the ship righted.” Casey McGrew (2-for-4, double, RBI, run) and Quentin Cate (3-for-4, double, three RBIs) also had big days at the plate for WSU, while freshman Jordan Marker threw three innings of relief to collect his first career victory. “This is a great event,” Raiders coach Rob Cooper said. “To be able to help honor Joe Nuxhall, we’re happy to be a part of it.” www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/wright-state-university-raiders/wsu-dumps-miami-will-face-xavier-in-nuxhall-classic-final-81831.html

Baseball Surrenders Late Lead, Falls 10-9 to Xavier at Joe Nuxhall Classic April 15, 2009 CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Wright State baseball team trailed by five runs twice against Xavier in the championship game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic hosted by the University of Cincinnati, but rallied to take a one run lead into the bottom of the eighth. The Raiders bullpen couldn’t hold the lead as XU tallied two runs in the eighth to claim a 10-9 victory at Marge Schott Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Xavier got on the board with a run in the opening frame off of WSU starting pitcher Tyler Newhart and added four more runs in the third to end Newhart’s outing. WSU would tally their first runs of the contest in the fourth inning as Quentin Cate scored the first run when Garrett Gray grounded into a double play. With two outs in the frame, Gerald Ogrinc doubled and Tristan Moore walked, before Aaron Field would slice a ball down the left field line to score two more and pull the Raiders close at 5-3. Three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth off of Wright State reliever Casey Henn would extend the XU lead back to five runs at 8-3. The Green and Gold would add two runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to claim their first lead of the game at 9-8. Ryan Ashe singled in a pair of RBI’s in the fifth, Casey McGrew tripled in two runs in the sixth and Quentin Cate smacked his fifth home run of the season - a two run shot – in the eighth to give WSU a 9-8 lead. Michael Meintel stood to be the winning pitcher as he tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The sophomore struck out four batters and allowed only two singles in the outing. In the bottom of the eighth, the Musketeers would mount a rally when reliever Greg Robinson allowed a pair of singles to start the frame and Jordan Wolfe surrendered an RBI single that brought home the tying run. Michael Schum came on and retired the next three batters, but not before the go-ahead run would score, giving Xavier a 10-9 lead. The Raiders would go in order in the ninth inning as they stranded 13 base runners in the contest, outhitting the Musketeers 16-12 in the contest. Cate collected his second-straight three-hit contest, driving in two RBI’s and scoring three times. Mercer added three hits of his own and scored three times, while Fields was three-for-five with a pair of RBI’s in the game. Kory Twede and Jake Hibberd each chipped in two hits in the loss, with seven of the ninth starters collecting hits in the ballgame. Woytek, Schum Pitch Baseball to 8-1 Victory at Valparaiso April 17, 2009 VALPARAISO, Ind. – Casey McGrew collected three hits and drove in two RBI’s, while Michael Woytek tossed five innings to help the Wright State Baseball team to an 8-1 victory on Friday afternoon at Valparaiso. The Green and Gold collected 11 hits and all nine starters either scored a run or drove in an RBI to help WSU even its Horizon League mark at 5-5. The Raiders got the offense started in the opening frame when R.J. Gundolff tripled to start the contest and scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt by Jake Hibberd. In the fourth, Wright State tacked on a pair of runs as McGrew doubled to lead off the inning and Quentin Cate walked to put two on with no outs. Kory Twede sacrificed the runners to second and third with a bunt, before Aaron Fields plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan Ashe drove in an RBI with a single to left field with two outs in the frame, bringing home Cate, to give WSU a 3-0 lead. Valparaiso tacked on a run in their half of the fourth as a throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed the first VU run to cross the plate against WSU starting pitcher Woytek. Woytek got into some trouble in the fifth inning as he loaded the bases with one out in the frame. The Crusaders used a hit batter, a single and a walk to pack the sacks before the right hander nabbed a line drive back at the mound and doubled off the runner at second base to hold the Raiders lead at 3-1. The fifth was the last inning of work for Woytek, who left with a 3-1 lead, as he allowed only one run on four hits. The sophomore improves to 3-2 on the season as he walked five batters, struck out four and turned one double play. Gundolff drove in an RBI in the seventh inning after Aaron Fields led the inning off with a single and Twede added a pair of RBI’s with a single in the eighth to push the Raiders lead to 6-1. The Green and Gold would cap their scoring with a two-RBI double from McGrew in the ninth and Michael Schum would preserve the victory for WSU. Schum came on and threw the final four innings scoreless to collect his seventh save of the season. The right hander fanned four batters and didn’t walk anyone in his 21st outing of the year. McGrew doubled, tripled and drove in two runs in the contest, while Twede drove in a pair of RBI’s and stole his sixth base of the season. Gundolff collected two hits, including a triple, while eight of the nine WSU starters collected hits. The Raiders are now 17-20 overall and 5-5 in the Horizon League after the series opening victory. The two teams will conclude their series on Saturday, April 18 starting at 1:00 Dayton time. The Green and Gold will take to the field for a double-header with the Crusaders with Rylan Ostrosky and Travis LaMar scheduled to throw for WSU. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/041709aaa.html

Bauer Field. Four WSU players posted multi-hit games and Michael Schum worked two scoreless innings for his eighth save of the season. Ostrosky worked into the third inning of a scoreless game for the Raiders, but Valparaiso added a pair of runs with two outs in the frame. Ostrosky allowed a single between a pair of fly outs, before Matt Lenski sent the 3-0 offering deep to right center field to give the host Crusaders a 2-0 lead. The Green and Gold could muster only two hits through the first six innings, with a third inning single from R.J. Gundolff and a sixth frame double from Jeff Mercer accounting for the only hit to that point. Wright State tallied their first run in the seventh inning as back-to-back singles from freshman Ryan Ashe and Garrett Gray got the inning started with two outs. Gundolff stepped in and delivered a single up the middle to score Ashe from second and cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Ostrosky continued his solid outing into the seventh inning as he retired the side 1-2-3 with help from newly inserted catcher Gerald Ogrinc, who threw out a base runner at second base after a leadoff single. The Green and Gold took the lead in the top of the eighth inning when a pair of two-out RBI’s were collected by Ashe with a double to right center field. That was the end of the day for Ostrosky, as the senior left as the pitcher of record, and Schum came on with WSU leading 3-2. As an error and a walk put two runners on base in the eighth inning, but three fly ball outs got the Raiders offense back to the plate. In the ninth, WSU tacked on three more runs all coming with two outs in the contest. Casey McGrew walked and later scored in a wild pitch, while Cate and Twede each drove in RBI’s with hits in the inning. Ostrosky tossed seven innings, allowed two runs on eight hits and didn’t walk a batter. The Edmonton, Ontario native fanned a season-high six batters and improved to 4-3 overall on the season. Cate, Schum Sweep Horizon League Baseball Weekly Awards April 20, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After posting a 3-2 overall mark – including a series victory at Valparaiso – the Wright State baseball team collected the Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, announced the Horizon League office on Monday. Quentin Cate earned the Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career, while Michael Schum collected his second award for his mound work during the week. In five games last week, Cate boasted a .526 batting average with ten hits in 19 at-bats. The junior scored six runs and, after hitting safely in each contest, ended the week with a five game hitting streak. He drove in five RBI’s in two games at the Joe Nuxhall Classic and added three hits in each of those games. At Valparaiso, the third baseman drove in one runs and scored three times, while collecting one sacrifice hit. His on-base percentage was .591 and he struck out only once in 23 plate appearances for the week. Cate becomes the third WSU player to earn the honor this season and is the 39th player in Wright State history to win a player or pitcher of the week honor in program history. Schum earns his second Pitcher of the Week honor this season after not allowing a run in four appearances during the week. Schum preserved all three of the WSU victories last week, collecting a pair of saves, while lowering his ERA to a league best 1.62. In four appearances, Schum tossed eight scoreless innings and posted a pair of multi-inning saves at Valparaiso. The right-hander fanned seven, walked only two and surrendered five hits – four of them singles. The two saves give Schum eight on the season, ranking him seventh on the single season list and putting him in seventh on the career saves list. The Raiders will return to action on Friday, April 24 with a double-header against UIC starting at 1:00. The Green and Gold are currently 18-21 overall and sit at 6-6 in the Horizon League, tied for third with Valparaiso as of April, 20th. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/042009aaa.html
