Wright State star Mercer just looking for a few pro seasonsBy Michael Pointer May 2, 2009 Jeff Mercer is having a stellar season for the Wright State baseball team, but he realizes that isn't necessarily endearing him to major league scouts. That's because on July 29, the former Franklin High School standout turns 24, which is considered old for a player who has never been drafted. He suspects the scouts will look for a younger player with more upside or room to improve. He responds by saying he can help an organization even if he never makes it to the major league level. "Room me with your first-round draft choice and make sure he doesn't do something dumb,'' Mercer said. "That's what I bring, a calming presence. That's what I offer. I'll help you nurture your first-round draft choice; you let me be a kid for a couple of more years.'' The senior first baseman looks to be on his way to earning All-Horizon League honors for a second consecutive season. Mercer leads Wright State (22-22) in nearly every key offensive category, including batting average (.374), home runs (four) and runs batted in (46). Beyond the statistics, he has been receiving compliments about his leadership skills much of his life. "He goes above and beyond what you can see on paper, (in terms of) leadership and work ethic,'' then-Franklin coach Brian Luse said when Mercer was named to the Indianapolis Star's Super Team in 2004. Mercer played two years at the University of Dayton before transferring to Wright State. He is older than his teammates in part because he took a redshirt year while at Dayton to return to Franklin and be close to his ailing younger brother, Daniel, who died of brain cancer in 2006. "I don't have any delusions of grandeur," Mercer said. "But for a hillbilly from Bargersville, Indiana, to spend even one day in professional baseball would be an amazing experience not many people can have. It would be a very gratifying way to end my career." www.indystar.com/article/20090502/SPORTS06/905020440/1247/SPORTS

Baseball Drops Series Opener at UICwww.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/050109aaa.htmlThe Wright State baseball team could not overcome a fast start by UIC as the Flames scored eight times over the first four innings and went on to a 8-3 Horizon League decision Friday night at Les Miller Field. All of the scoring for the game happened over the first four innings as UIC tallied three runs in the first, two in the third and three more in the fourth while the Raiders scored once in the second and twice in the third. WSU's run in the second came on a RBI single from R.J. Gundolff and the two in the third scored as a result of a Quentin Cate single and a Kory Twede squeeze bunt. Casey Henn would enter the game in relief in the fifth and was able to shut out the Flames over the final five innings, but the Raiders were unable to cut into the deficit. Casey McGrew, Cate and Aaron Fields each had two hits for Wright State (22-23, 9-8 Horizon). The Raiders and Flames conclude the three-game set with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00 Eastern.

Baseball Falls 11-9 in First Game at UIC May 2, 2009 Jeff Mercer moved to fourth on the single-season doubles list and Quentin Cate recorded his seventh homer of the season, but it was enough as UIC overcame a 7-1 deficit to defeat the Raiders 11-9 in the first game of a Horizon League baseball doubleheader Saturday at Les Miller Field. The Raiders got off to a hot start, batting around and scoring six runs in the first, an inning that featured a leadoff home run from R. J. Gundolff along with Cate's seventh home run of the season. An RBI single from Mercer extended the WSU lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth, but UIC would begin its comeback from there as a three-run home run from Tony Altavilla made it 7-4. The Flames added five runs in the fifth to give them their first lead of the game and tacked on two more in the sixth. The Raiders tallied a run in the eighth and ninth but could get no closer. WSU outhit UIC 15-14 in the contest with seven extra base hits. Aaron Fields and Ryan Ashe led the way offensively with three hits while Gundolff, Mercer and Garrett Gray each had a pair. Wright State (22-24, 9-9 Horizon) closes out the series with game two of the doubleheader later this afternoon. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/050209aab.html

Baseball Holds on For 6-5 Victory Over Dayton May 5, 2009 DAYTON, Ohio – Aaron Fields drove in a pair of RBI’s and Jordan Marker held the Flyers hitless over the first three innings to help the Wright State baseball team to a 6-5 victory over cross town rival Dayton on Tuesday evening at Nischwitz Stadium. The capacity crowd of 836 watched as the Green and Gold snapped Dayton’s 12-game winning streak by scoring two runs in three separate innings. The Raiders got on the board in the opening frame when Quentin Cate singled with runners on first and second to score the first run of the contest. Cate and Mercer, who was hit by a pitch to reach base, moved to second and third on an error by the left fielder and Mercer came in to score on a Ryan Ashe RBI ground out. WSU tacked on two more runs in the second inning when Garrett Gray walked with one out to start the frame and Tristan Moore singled to put two runners on. Fields stepped in and doubled on the next pitch to plate Gray and Moore, giving WSU the early 4-0 lead. UD (32-15) got their first run in the third against starting pitcher Jordan Marker as an error allowed a base runner to reach and a sacrifice fly scored the run, unearned. Casey Henn entered for WSU in the fourth and got into some trouble as he allowed a leadoff double, hit a batter and walked one to load the bases. Jake Hoover singled to score the first run of the inning and after a line drive out, a walk forced in the second run of the frame. Greg Robinson came on and coaxed a double-play ball out of Jacob Speath to end the threat with WSU leading 4-3. Two runs in the fourth extended the Raiders lead to 6-3 as Mercer and McGrew each collected their first RBI’s of the contest with back-to-back doubles. The RBI for Mercer was his 50th of the season, marking only the second time in school history (Kris Jarosz, 1995 & 1995) that a WSU player has posted back-to-back 50-RBI seasons. Robinson held the Flyers scoreless in the fifth and Travis LaMar tossed a one-two-three sixth to hold the Raiders lead at 6-3. UD added a run in the seventh against LaMar, as a passed ball allowed another unearned run to score, making it a 6-4 lead in favor of WSU. Lee Valencheck came on in the eighth and retired the first batter, but allowed a single and walked a batter, before Michael Schum came on in relief. An RBI single up the middle brought in the first run of the inning but Schum got a ground out and struck out a batter to hold the Raiders lead at 6-5. Schum coaxed a ground out to start the ninth, struck out the second batter and Mercer made a diving stop and tossed to Schum at the bag for the final out of the contest. It was the 11th save of the season for the right-hander as he fanned two in 1.2 innings of work with only one hit. Fields drove in a pair of runs from the leadoff spot, while Cate went four-for-five with an RBI to raise his average to .337. The first five batters in the WSU lineup collected RBI’s and Moore scored a pair of runs in the game. The Raiders (24-24) out-hit Dayton 11-8 and WSU turned a pair of double plays to stifle Flyer rallies in the contest. WSU stranded 12 runners in the contest, while UD left only nine runners aboard. Marker got the win to improve to 2-0 on the season with three innings of no-hit baseball. He walked one and allowed only an unearned run. Chris Beesley (4-3) took the loss for Dayton, allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits and a pair of walks. Wright State will return to action this weekend with a pair of double-headers in Horizon League play. WSU will open with a twinbill at Youngstown State on Friday, May 8th at Eastwood field. The start time of those games are now 3:00, a change from the original start time announced at the beginning of the season. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/050509aaa.html

Offense, Bullpen Leads Baseball to 13-6 Victory in Game One at Youngstown State May 8, 2009 NILES, Ohio – All nine starters collected a hit for the Wright State Baseball team as they claimed a 13-6 victory in game one of a double-header at Youngstown State on Friday afternoon. The Green and Gold scored runs in seven of the eight frames and Greg Robinson tossed 4.1 innings in relief to help WSU to the win. The Raiders scored one run in each of the first three innings, two coming on Jeff Mercer sacrifice flies and the other coming on a second inning home run from Quentin Cate, and led 3-2 heading into the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Michael Woytek had given up only two unearned runs through three innings of work, but after walking a pair of batters with one out in the fourth, C.J. Morris ended his day with a three run homer to left-center field. The homer ended the day for Woytek after 3.2 innings of work with two strikeouts and five runs earned – only three earned. Aaron Field and R.J. Gundolff singled with one out in the top of the fifth and Mercer smacked his 25th double of the season to plate the first run of the inning. Casey McGrew stepped in and took the next offering from Swenson deep to right field for a 385-foot, three-run home run to push WSU back ahead at 7-5. WSU benefited from a pair of YSU errors to add to their lead in the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 10-5. In the sixth, Tristan Moore started the frame with a single and came around to score in a throwing error by the YSU third baseman. In the seventh, WSU added a pair of runs all started with a walk from Cate. Ryan Ashe doubled down the right field line and on the play, Cate scored on a throwing error. Later in the frame, Moore struck out swinging, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach base and Ashe scampered home to score from third. Cate drove in two more runs in the eighth inning after Mercer and McGrew singled to start the frame and the 12th double of the season for the California native accounted for the 11th and 12th runs of the game for WSU. Kory Twede smacked a solo home run to cap the scoring for the Raiders later in the frame – his fifth home run of the season – giving WSU a 13-5 edge. Robinson didn’t allow a run in his first 3.1 innings of work, but the Penguins tallied one run and ended the frame as the Raiders turned the inning ending triple play as a ground ball to Fields, the second baseman flipped to Gundolff who tossed to Mercer at first to complete the double play. But, the runner from third was waved home and Mercer tossed to Gerald Ogrinc who tagged the runner out at the plate to complete the triple play. Robinson collected the victory, going 4.1 innings and allowing only one run on five hits. The right-hander fanned two and didn’t walk a batter to improve to 1-2 on the season. Tyler Newhart came on and tossed the final inning and coaxed a double play ball to close out the game. In the contest, all nine WSU players collected hits and each player scored a run in the opening game of the double-header. Twede and Cate each tallied three hits and four other WSU players collected two hits in the contest. Cate, McGrew and Mercer all drove in three RBI’s in game one and Twede collected the only other RBI for the Raiders. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/050809aac.html

The Raiders tallied 13 runs for the second straight contest and Ryan Ashe smacked his first career home run to help pace WSU in the win. Youngstown State got the scoring started with a two-run home run off the bat of Jeremy Banks against the Wright State starting pitcher, Kaminsky. It was only the second home run allowed by Kaminsky and gave WSU an early 2-0 lead. The Raiders struck back in the top half of the second inning as Quentin Cate smacked his second home run of the day – ninth of the year – to left-center field, after Casey McGrew walked to start the frame. Later in the inning, Hibberd hit his third home run of the season and WSU led 3-2 heading into the third. In the third frame, the Raiders added four more runs, the first on an RBI bunt single from Casey McGrew, to extend their lead to 7-2. In the frame, Ashe hit his first career home run – a three run shot – to right field to cap the scoring in the third inning. After Youngstown State added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 7-4, the Green and Gold added five runs in the fourth to extend their lead. In the frame, the first eight batters reached base and four players collected RBI’s against a pair of YSU pitchers. Cate doubled and drove in two in the frame, while R.J. Gundolff, Mercer and McGrew all drove in runs, as well. Mercer capped the scoring in the final inning played with a solo home run to left-center field. The line drive homer sailed over the 375 sign for the fifth home run of the season for the senior. Big Innings Propel Baseball to 12-6 Victory in Game One Win at Cleveland State May 9, 2009 LORAIN, Ohio – The Wright State baseball team tallied 12 unanswered runs to come from behind for a 12-6 victory in game one of a double-header at Cleveland State on Saturday. The Raiders fell behind 6-0, but sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven run, fifth inning and Newhart came on to toss the final five frames to pick up his first career save. Cleveland State jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage after two innings against Wright State starting pitcher Travis LaMar. Josh Hungerman plated the first run with a single in the opening frame and Tom Carter hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to stake the home team to the early lead. LaMar couldn’t get out of the third inning as he recorded a pair of outs, leaving with the bases loaded after walking two and hitting a batter. Lee Valencheck came on and coxed a ground out from Josh Federico to stifle the rally and hold the CSU lead to 2-0 heading to the fourth. The lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth inning as CSU touched up Valencheck for a pair of home runs – one sole and one three-run homer, before the Raiders offense would exploded for seven runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to jump out to an 11-6 lead. In the fifth, Quentin Cate started the inning with his tenth home run of the season to left-center field and Kory Twede homered one batter later to account for the first two runs of the contest for WSU. Jake Hibberd doubled, followed by an Ogrinc single, and Aaron Fields drove in the third run of the frame with a single. After an R.J. Gundolff single loaded the bases, Jeff Mercer drove in two runs with a single of his own and a balk brought home the tying run later in the frame. Casey McGrew brought in the go ahead run with a single later in the frame and WSU led 7-6 after sending 12 batters to the plate. In the Raiders half of the sixth, the long ball added a few more runs to the Raiders total when Fields smacked his second homer of the season with Hibberd on second. McGrew added his fifth home run of the season – a two-run shot – later in the inning and WSU led 11-6 heading to the home half of the frame. Fields added his fourth RBI of the game with a double in the ninth inning and Tyler Newhart tossed the final five innings for the Raiders to claim his first career save. Valencheck tossed 1.1 innings and allowed four runs on two hits with a strikeout to pick up his first career victory, thanks to the seven-run fifth by his offensive unit. Newhart replaced Valencheck in the fifth and went on to close out the contest with five innings of three hit baseball. The freshman fanned six and didn’t walk a batter in the scoreless outing. In the game, all ten WSU players that played collected hits and five different players accounted for RBI’s as the Raiders scored 10+ runs for the third straight contest. Fields went four-for-six and drove in four runs, while McGrew collected three RBI’s and Mercer plated a pair of runs. Hibberd scored three times, while Gundolff and Fields each crossed the plate twice. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/050909aaa.html

The Raiders, now 28-25 overall, opened the scoring in the first inning as Casey McGrew reached on a fielder’s choice, before Jeff Mercer would hit a fly ball down the right field line. With WSU leading 2-0, starting pitcher Greg Robinson tossed three innings, allowing only one hit, with four strikeouts. Wright State Baseball Claims 4-2 Victroy in Series Opener Versus Cleveland State May 15, 2009 DAYTON, Ohio – Jeff Mercer drove in three runs, Alex Kaminsky allowed only one run in 6.1 innings and Michael Schum nailed down his 13th save of the year as the Wright State baseball team captured a 4-2 victory in the series opener against Cleveland State on Friday evening at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders honored their student-athletes before the game and the crowd of over 500 enjoyed watching Wright State starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky work in and out of trouble to hold the Vikings scoreless through the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, WSU broke through with the bases loaded and two outs. Mercer stepped in and hit a line drive to left-center field that CSU center fielder Brad Buell made a diving attempt at, but missed making the play. All three runners would score on the two bagger and Mercer would tie the single-season mark of 26 set by Justin Parker during the 2007 season. On the play, Gerald Ogrinc, Aaron Fields and R.J. Gundolff all scored to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. Kaminsky would hold the CUS offense at bay through the sixth, but a single with one out from Jon Foco was followed by an RBI double off the bat of pinch hitter Josh Lowe to give the Vikings their first run of the contest. Michael Schum entered the contest after the double and coaxed a ground out and struck out the final batter of the frame to hold WSU’s lead at 3-1. Kory Twede would manufacture the Raiders fourth run on his own in the bottom of the seventh, doubling to start the frame off of Cleveland State starter Anthony Sambula. Twede then stole third base on the left-hander and scored on a throwing error by the Vikings catcher, pushing WSU ahead 4-1. Schum allowed a run in the eighth, cutting the advantage to only 4-2, but collected his 13th save of the year with a scoreless ninth to seal the victory. Kaminsky got the win in the contest and is now 5-2 after tossing 6.1 innings, allowing one run on ten hits with four strikeouts. The Raiders, now 29-25 overall and 14-10 in Horizon League play, had six players collect hits in the contest. Mercer pushed his season RBI total to 63 with three in the game and Quentin Cate extended his hitting streak to 20-games with a single in the second inning.
