Baseball Claims Three Specialty Awards, Places Five On All-League Team May 18, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Horizon League announced their postseason awards on Monday afternoon, with the Wright State baseball team garnering three specialty awards and placing seven players on the All-League and All-Newcomer Teams. Jeff Mercer earned Player of the Year, Michael Schum was named Relief Pitcher of the Year and Quentin Cate garnered Newcomer of the Year honors, as voted on by the seven Horizon League head coaches. Mercer is the third straight Wright State player to earn the Player of the Year honor from the Horizon League, marking the first time in league history that one team has claimed three straight awards. The senior averaged 1.48 hits, 1.14 RBI’s and almost one run per-game this season with 56 starts. He ranked among the top-ten in 11 statistical categories at the end of the regular season. Mercer led the Horizon League in hits (83), RBI’s (64), doubles (26) and ranked second in total bases (131) and runs scored (48). His batting average of .367 tied for fifth in the regular season and he collected 34 extra-base hits, more than any other league player. His 26 doubles rank third in league history and tie for the WSU single season mark. Schum earns Relief Pitcher of the Year honors after posting the best earned run average, batting average against and finished more games than any other Horizon League pitcher. His 1.79 ERA in 60.1 innings of work is 1.00 better than the next closest league pitcher and ranks fourth nationally. Schum made 31 appearances, ranking second in single season history at Wright State, and his 13 saves are tied with Joe Smith for fourth in Horizon League single season history. Schum allowed only 12 earned runs in 31 appearances and posted a record of 3-6 through the end of the regular season. He fanned 47 batters and walked only nine, while holding opposing batters to a slim .214 batting average. The freshman was on the mound to end the game in 29 contests, with 20 of those games being Wright State victories. Cate earned the Newcomer of the Year award after a solid season as the Raiders third baseman. The junior boasted a .367 batting average with 54 RBI’s to go along with a league best 12 home runs and 132 total bases. He ranked among the league leaders in ten offensive categories and his 12 home runs are tied for eighth in a single season at WSU. Cate ranked fourth in slugging percentage among his league counterparts and ranked among the top-three in RBI’s, hits (80) and runs scored (44) to go along with a .440 on-base percentage. He batted .402 in league contests this season, ranking second among league only stats, and drove in a league best 28 RBI’s in league games to become the first WSU player to earn the award since 2001 (Trent Matthews). The Green and Gold placed three players on the 2009 All-Horizon League First Team, as Mercer and Cate joined outfielder Casey McGrew. This is the second First Team honor for Mercer, who was the Designated Hitter on the 2008 All-League squad. McGrew owned a .326 batting average during the season with a league-best 52 runs scored. McGrew also ranked among the league leaders in walks, home runs, triples and doubles to earn his first nod on the All-League First Team. Schum joined shortstop R.J. Gundolff on the All-League second team after a solid junior campaign. Gundolff ranked among the league leaders in batting average (.349), runs scored (44), hits (66), triples (4) and sacrifice hits (9). The junior also had 20 RBI’s, mostly from the top of the order, and stole nine bases on the season to earn the second-straight, second team selection from the Horizon League. Schum and Cate joined fellow newcomers Ryan Ashe and Jake Hibberd on the All-Newcomer squad, with the four newcomers tops among the other league schools. Ashe boasted a .315 batting average with 28 RBI’s, 33 runs scored and a .388 on-base percentage. Hibberd smacked five home runs during his rookie campaign with 24 RBI’s and 18 runs scored. The newcomer selections give WSU at least one All-Newcomer pick in each of their 15 seasons in the Horizon League. The Raiders had the most players honored by the league in 2009, with seven different players garnering All-League honors. The seven selections give WSU 58 total selections on the All-League First or Second Team and the four All-Newcomers give the Green and Gold an even 30 players on the all-time list. Wright State will open up the Horizon League Tournament on Wednesday, May 20 at 3:00 against the winner of the play-in contest between #6 Youngstown State and #7 Butler on Tuesday. The third-seeded Raiders will play their first contest at Pipe Yard Stadium in Lorain, Ohio starting at 3:00. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/051809aab.html

WSU pitcher’s love of baseball comes from his dadWednesday, May 20, 2009 Greg Robinson played all the sports with his dad, Greg Sr., but both liked baseball the best. “Dad used to play when he was young,” said Greg Robinson Jr., a junior pitcher on the Wright State baseball team. “Then he changed to softball. He started me at 5,
playing catch in the back yard.” The two used to throw around a football as well, and play basketball. They even visited baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. That companionship ended five years ago, when the younger Robinson was in the middle of his junior baseball season at Wilmington High School. “I had just come home from school and was doing something on the computer,” said Robinson, who has a 1-2 record this year. “I looked up and this guy who worked with my dad in construction was walking up with a sheriff. At first, I thought I did something wrong.” It was much worse than that. Robinson’s father, in his mid-40s, had died in a construction accident. Part of his legacy is a son who loves baseball. “It all started when we went to a Reds game, when I was 8 or 9,” Robinson said. “We’d always go on my birthday. I keep him in my mind every day, and I have a picture of us at the Hall of Fame. I have a tattoo of him on my arm. “If I have tough times, Wilmington is only 45 minutes away. I don’t hesitate to go to the cemetery and talk to him.” Today, May 20, Robinson will be with the Raiders when they play their Horizon League tournament opener at 3 p.m. The event runs through Saturday in Lorain. WSU is the No. 3 seed. The Raiders bring a 29-27 record (14-12 Horizon) into tourney play. www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/wright-state-university-raiders/wsu-pitchers-love-of-baseball-comes-from-his-dad-126342.html

Baseball Wins League Tournament Opener 8-3 Over Butler May 20, 2009 LORAIN, Ohio – Alex Kaminsky tossed nine innings, scattered 12 hits to help lead the Wright State baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Butler in the opening round of the 2009 Horizon League Tournament. After falling behind early, WSU rallied to take the lead and Kaminsky settled in, striking out seven batters and not walking anyone to claim his sixth win of the season. Colin Ziegel smacked a second inning home run off of Kaminsky to give Butler an early 1-0 lead, and starting pitcher Mike Hernandez retired the first eight WSU batters he faced. Garrett Gray doubled for the first hit of the game for WSU with two outs in the third inning and an R.J. Gundolff triple plated him to knot the game at 1-1. McGrew singled with one out in the third inning, stole second base and came around to score on a Ryan Ashe single up the middle. With WSU leading 2-1, Ziegel struck again, this time with an RBI single in the sixth inning to tied the game at 2-2. WSU would score the next five runs to open up an 7-2 cushion. WSU struck with two in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to give Kaminsky all the room he needed. McGrew singled to start the inning and Quentin Cate doubled to give WSU the lead for good. Wright State loaded the bases against Hernandez and after Jake Hibberd grounded into a double play, plating Cate, the Raiders lead was 4-2. The Raiders plated three runs in the seventh inning – sending nine batters to the plate – and extended their lead to 7-2. Mercer singled to start the scoring, after Gundolff started the inning with a single, plating his first RBI of the contest with a single. McGrew reached on an error in the next at-bat and Cate was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Mercer scored on a wild pitcher and Kory Twede singled to drive in the final run of the inning. After a Michael Letzter plated a run with a fielder’s choice in the eighth, Mercer plated Gundolff for the eighth and final run of the contest. Butler loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning against Kaminsky, but the right hander got an infield popup and Gundolff recorded the final out with a nice play up the middle to give Kaminsky his second complete game of the season. Kaminsky didn’t walk a batter, allowed 12 hits – only three going for extra bases – and struck out seven to improve to 6-2 overall this season. He coaxed one double play and stranded eight Bulldog base runners to help WSU win their opening game for the third time in their last four league tournaments. Kaminsky was honored as the U.S. Army Player of the Game for his effort. Mercer plated three with a pair of hits, while McGrew and Gunldolff each collected three hits in the contest. Gray doubled and scored a run, while Twede and Ashe each chipped in a pair of hits versus the Bulldogs. The Green and Gold will play on Thursday, May 21 against the #2-seeded Milwaukee Panthers at Pipe Yard Stadium. The game will start at 3:00and be broadcast live on WWSU 106.9 FM or online at listen.to/wwsu. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/052009aaa.html

Wright State Baseball Explodes for 20-4 Win Over Milwaukee in League Tournament
LORAIN, Ohio – The Wright State baseball team scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and Jordan Marker tossed four perfect innings of relief to help WSU to a 20-4 victory in the second round of the 2009 Horizon League Championship. Kory Twede tied a tournament record with six RBI’s and Jeff Mercer drove in five RBI’s to push his season total to 71.
The Raiders struck first when R.J. Gundolff led off the game with his second career leadoff home run. The junior sent the third offering of the contest 355 feet over the left field fence to push WSU ahead, 1-0.
After Milwaukee scored the next three runs off of Wright State starter Greg Robinson, the two teams were both scoreless in the third. Josh Groves plated two runs with a single in the first inning for Milwaukee and Andy Gerhartz plated a run in the second inning to give UWM a 3-2 edge heading to the fourth.
In the fourth inning, Jeff Mercer led off the frame with a solo home run to left-center field, starting an 11 run inning that saw WSU send 15 hitters to the plate. Mercer homered later in the frame – a three-run shot – and four players collected two hits in the inning, with WSU staking to an 11-3 edge.
Jordan Marker, who entered in the third inning, didn’t allow a hit and fanned four in his four innings of work. The redshirt freshman didn’t walk a batter and forced five groundball outs to improve to 3-0 on the season.
WSU added to their lead in the seventh inning with eight runs, including a leadoff home run from Kory Twede. Garrett Gray went long ball later in the inning and after an RBI single from Mercer and a bases loaded walk to Tristan Moore, Twede smacked a grand slam to push WSU ahead, 19-3.
Tyler Newhart worked a scoreless seventh inning and the Raiders added their 20th run on a RBI double from Casey McGrew in the eighth to cap their scoring.
With WSU leading 20-3, Milwaukee plated a run in the eighth against relief pitcher Casey Henn, but the freshman recorded the final six outs and ended the game with a pop out to Gundolff at shortstop.
In the contest, WSU set a new Horizon League Tournament records for total bases (46) in a game, while tying the mark for home runs in a tournament game (6). Twede tied the league tournament record with six RBI’s and his 12 total bases are tied for the most in a single game in league history.

Baseball Edged By Wright State, 7-6, In Topsy-Turvy Horizon League Tourney GameMay 22, 2009 LORAIN, Ohio- The UIC baseball team raced out to an early five-run advantage, but the Flames saw their lead vanquish during Wright State's five-run seventh inning and eventually fell to the Raiders, 7-6, in a 2009 Horizon League Baseball Championship contest at The Pipe Yard on Friday night. UIC (27-22) will take on Milwaukee in an elimination game on Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m. Central. The winner will play Wright State (32-27) in a championship round contest at 2 p.m. Central. The Flames scored six times in the first three innings, but their bats cooled thereafter as UIC did not light the scoreboard in the final six frames. Freshman catcher Nathan Orf was UIC's constant on offense, going 5-for-5 to record his first career five-hit game and chalk up three-plus hits in a game for the fourth time in his last five starts. Starter Adam Worthington was dealing, having allowed just one unearned run through the first six, until Wright State had its first six batters of the seventh reach to eventually score five times and chase the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year. Closer Derrick Miramontes suffered his first loss of the season after giving up the winning run in the top of the eighth. The Raiders scored in unearned fashion during the opening inning. Aaron Fields doubled to right and advanced to third on a passed ball. Jeff Mercer drove Fields home on a sac fly to center. But the Flames responded in the bottom half of the inning by sending eight men to the plate and scoring three times. Brett Schaefer's hard-struck infield single to shortstop R.J. Gundolff with runners at the corners evened the contest. After starter Michael Woytek's first pitch to Jason Ganek plunked the UIC third baseman to load the bases, Andy Leonard flied out deep to right field to plate the go-ahead run and Tony Altavilla followed with a single through the right side of the infield that completed Schaefer's journey around the bases. UIC loaded the bases again in the second, and Ganek came through by poking a two-out, two-run single to short right to extend the Flames' advantage to four. The Flames inflicted some more two out damage in the third. With Johnny Rosinski on second after a one-out double, Harwell came to the plate two batters later and blooped a ball to short center field. The ducksnort dropped between Gundolff and centerfielder Ryan Ashe, allowing Rosinski to cruise home safely. Wright State threatened by putting two on with one out in the fifth for Fields, who crushed a deep drive that seemed destined to drop in the left centerfield gap. But Steve McGuiggan made an unbelievable diving catch, rose up and caught Garrett Gray trying to advance to third on an 8-4-5 double play. Worthington allowed just four hits through six, but the senior right-hander encountered trouble in the seventh as the strike zone appeared to shrink in a hurry. Two consecutive singles and a walk loaded the bases to begin the inning, and Gray singled to right to bring in a run and leave the bags juiced. Gundolff singled to left to bring in another run, and Fields doubled down the right field line to bring in two and close the gap to a single run. That caused head coach Mike Dee to summon his closer Miramontes, who induced a groundout off the bat of big bopper Jeff Mercer that brought in the tying run from third. Miramontes then elicited a double-play grounder off the bat of Quentin Cate to end the Raiders' five-run, five-hit frame. Wright State skipper Rob Cooper mirrored Dee's action in the bottom of the seventh, calling on his closer, league reliever of the year Michael Schum, in a battle between two of the conference's top game-enders. Ashe led off the eighth against Miramontes with a double to the left corner, and moments later Gray drove him home with the go-ahead run on a single to left. Dee was ejected by home plate umpire Jason Stidham as Miramontes warmed up for the ninth. Orf led off the ninth with his fifth knock of the night, leaving the game for pinch runner Brad Riegler after he hobbled to first. Ty Rubio moved Riegler into scoring position with the tying run, but Schum escaped by getting Schaefer and Ganek to ground out. Orf, the rookie from Wentzville, Mo., is hitting .708 (17-for-24) in his last five games. www.uicflames.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/052209aad.html

Baseball Rallies to Advance to Championship Game with 7-6 Win Over UIC May 22, 2009 LORAIN, Ohio – With only nine outs left in their semifinal game of the 2009 Horizon League Championships, the Wright State baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to claim a 7-6 victory over top-seeded UIC to advance to the Championship game at Pipe Yard Stadium on Saturday (May 23). Freshman Garrett Gray plated the game winning run with a single in the eighth and the Raiders bullpen tossed six scoreless innings to help secure the win over the Flames. The Raiders struck first when Aaron Fields doubled with one out in the frame, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Jeff Mercer sacrifice fly to right field. UIC would take control of the game with three runs in the first inning against Woytek, then added a pair of unearned runs in the second and a single run in the third to race out to the 6-1 lead. Michael Woytek had a rocky start for the Raiders, allowing six runs – only four earned – in three innings of work. The sophomore fanned four and walked two before handing the ball to Travis LaMar to start the fourth inning. After Woytek exited the contest, the Wright State bullpen went to work with six innings of scoreless relief and allowed only two hits the rest of the way. LaMar would allow only a single in the sixth and Schum would allow only a ninth inning single to give the WSU offense the chance they needed late in the game. With only nine outs remaining, and Horizon League pitcher of the Year Adam Worthington on the mound, WSU would mount its comeback as the first six batters would reach base to start the seventh inning. Gray and R.J. Gundolff each drove in RBI’s to start the seventh, while Fields doubled to plate a pair of runs and pull WSU within one at 6-5. Mercer stepped in and ground out to the shortstop, plating Gundolff from third to knot the game at 6-6. “I am very proud of our players,” head coach Rob Cooper said. “They didn’t give up, even early on, they had quality at-bats and kept battling to get us back into the game and gave us a chance to win in the end.” In the eighth, Gray struck again after Ryan Ashe doubled to start the frame. The freshman catcher singled through the left side and Ashe crossed the plate for the first career game winning RBI for Gray. Schum retired the first seven batters he faced, before Nathan Orf collected a single – his fifth hit of the game – to start the ninth. After a sacrifice bunt moved Orf to second, Schum got a diving stop by Cate to erase the next batter and Gundolff made the final out on a ground ball to help the Raiders advance. Fields was three-for-five with a pair of RBI’s and a run scored, while Mercer plated two more RBI’s to push his season total to 73. Gray plated a pair of runs and Ashe scored two runs with a pair of hits in the contest. The Green and Gold improve to 32-27 overall and will play the winner of the UIC/Milwaukee game at 11 am. WSU needs one win to claim their second league crown in four seasons against the winner of that contest, with the first pitch of the championship game thrown at 3:00. www.wsuraiders.com/sports/m-basebl/recaps/052209aab.html
