My initial reaction is one of disappointment. This whole situation was just weird to me.
Some random thoughts: - Coach Brownell must have thought very, very little of Kyle when you consider that the other centers playing in front of him are average to below average centers in the Horizon League. - We now have zero players in the sophomore class. - I hope he goes somewhere and has a positive experience on the basketball court. - It is so hard for mid majors to get big men that something major had to of happened for Kyle to virtually not play this year and for coach Brownell to apparently be OK with Kyle leaving ( he used the word mutual). - Kyle obviously had some smarts because he was on the honor roll this past quarter. - I hope we can fill a need this Spring with Kyle's scholarship. - What does this situation mean in regards to DJ Cunningham? - We better have get serious JUCO's lined up in two years or we won't have and post players in a couple of years. - Bad timing with the news that Gavin is injured
Well, I hope it all turns out for the better for both Kyle and WSU. Does this remind anybody else of the Marcus May banishment?

Does this remind anybody else of the Marcus May banishment? Do you think though that he was better then Gavin and Ronnie or even Cooper? When Kyle came in he didnt show anything. Kind of sucks cuz he rarely saw the court so its not really fair to him. But IMO his offensive skills lacked. I thought with a red-shirt year he would be way better then he showed.

riceownz2, I have no idea if Kyle is better then Ronnie, Gavin, or Cooper. I would assume that in coach Brownell's opinion Kyle was not better then any of them or he would have played in front of them.
From the limited time Kyle got in game action what always impressed me was how athletic Kyle appeared compared to the other three centers. I always felt like Kyle played with a high level of energy and was very aggressive, especially on the defensive end.
I don't see how we can bring in a JUCO for next year. Our sophomore class this year already has five players (Vaughn, Troy, Cooper, N'Gai, and Scottie ). I can see us bring in two or three in two years when we have zero players in that grade.
Like I mentioned earlier I just hope it works out for all parties involved.

here is what i find puzzling. our post play has been virtually nonexistant all season. ronnie probably averages 3-4ppg and gavin 1-2ppg. and yet despite the lack of production at the 5 spot, our redshirt freshman cannot break into the rotation in any significant way (maybe 5-6 minutes/game). my puzzle is not why the coach did not play him more ( the coach knows the right guys to play and for how long far better than i) but why the heck did we recruit him in the first place. this recruit seems to fit our pattern of recruiting of big men, which is to say we don't recruit them well at all. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not odd to hear of a player transferring but I'm surprised by the timing of this.
My gut feeling is that there is more to it than basketball. Perhaps a clash of personalities, lack of work ethic, unwillingness to buy into the system, etc. Whatever it is must have been getting worse to quit this close to the end of the season. From his standpoint he gains nothing in terms of eligibility by leaving now as opposed to the end of the season and from the team's standpoint he would have been useful as at least a body for practice and an emergency post player. Its a shame to have two years invested in a player and have essentially no return on that investment.
Good luck to Kyle in whatever he pursues from here forward and good luck to the coaches in their efforts to bring in an athletic post who can help Cooperwood with rebounding and post defense.

But I'm not optimistic this staff can find someone all that good. Hopefully they pull a rabbit out a hat like with Cooperwood last year. We are in at least 2 very good JUCOs that can help from day one next year.

Kyle's biggest problem was that he just didn't get it. He just didn't seem to understand what he was supposed to be doing on either end of the court and always seemed lost. You could tell the kid was a good athlete and had potential, but if he was still struggling this much after 2 years into our system it was probably in everyones best interest that he did leave. Based on our recruiting effort for next year, it doesn't sound like our coaches were surprised in the least by this.

I don't see how we can bring in a JUCO for next year. Our sophomore class this year already has five players (Vaughn, Troy, Cooper, N'Gai, and Scottie ). I can see us bring in two or three in two years when we have zero players in that grade. I would be completely shocked if we didn't bring in a JUCO post player. Having 6 players in 1 class doesn't mean anything. We were planning on bringing in 2 JUCOs last year (Cory and Jeron Lewis) when we already had 4 players in that class (Todd, JD, Vaughn, and Ronnie). Coaches can always balance out that class in the future by mixing in some JUCOs with freshman.

When it was announced that we landed Darkwa I said we had a pretty good shot at landing 2-3 different JUCOs for next season, so we must have really liked Darwa. Kyle leaving is no shock and I think our coaches have been prepared for it. I think we have a pretty good shot at landing 2 different forwards. Marquis Mathis is a 6-8, 225 pound power forward from Cincinnati State CC and DeAntre Jefferson is a 6-8, 235 pound power forward from Vincennes CC. Either player would be an impact player for us next year similar to Cory Cooperwood.

Good luck Kyle. Hope it works out for you wherever you end up. For WSU, I hope we can land that impact post player that put this team over the edge next year.

First off, best wishes to Kyle wherever he ends up. Second, this is a good opportunity for WSU to bring in an impact player for next year. I have high hopes for Darkwa, but I would sure love to hear that we sign another experienced post player. Next year's team has a chance to be pretty special if we can stay healthy and sign one more solid contributor in the middle.

I think that more offense from the paint is critical for next season, and I don't know if that can come from a true freshman. I hope to see that either Jefferson or Mathis are signed soon. If you have kept track of their stats this season, you will see that they have improved throughout the season. That shows me that they must be strong, and we sure could use that strength.

I want to wish Kyle the best for his future. I wish things would have worked out for him here at WSU. I honestly feel that if we can land a decent big man for next year that we'll be pushing for the Top 25 IF we stay healthy next season.

This is why you never leave in the middle of the year, especially when it's too late to save the year of eligibility. Now Gavin Horne is hurt and there would have been playing time available for Pressley. What a quitter. I still don't think he would have played tonight.
