I hope Central State really challenges us. Playing Washington on their home opener is gonna be tough. I'm not saying I hope we lose but at the same time I don't wanna it to be one of those exhibition games that looks like a pick-up game at the local YMCA the entire 2nd half.

Returning Raiders impress BrownellBy Marc Katz, Staff Writer November 4, 2009 FAIRBORN — With an exhibition game looming against Central State on Thursday, Nov. 5, Wright State basketball coach Brad Brownell has his team compartmentalized into three groups. There are seven available returning players, three freshmen and two players — John David Gardner and Vaughn Duggins — who aren’t available. Gardner will be out 6-to-8 weeks following a second hip surgery last week — although he is walking without crutches already — and Duggins was suspended for the exhibition and the first three regular-season games for an off-court incident. “I’m pleased with our seven returners who are playing,” Brownell said. “There’s a distinct difference between those guys and the three new guys.” Of the returning seven, forwards Todd Brown and Cory Cooperwood, center Ronnie Thomas and guards N’Gai Evans and Scott Grote will likely start. Once Duggins returns, he probably will knock Grote out of the starting lineup, but Grote still expects to be a big contributor. Freshmen will playThe three freshmen are guards Darian Cartharn and Tyler Koch and forward Paul Darkwa. All are expected to contribute, although Darkwa is expected to make the most impact with his rebounding skills. Making it a little tougher is Brownell’s motion offense, not the easiest to pick up. More offense neededWright State finished ninth in scoring (60.5 points per game) in the 10-team Horizon League last year but first in defense (57.5). “We were a pretty good defensive team last year,” Brownell said. “We have to be more efficient and better offensively if we’re going to win at a higher level. “I’m all for scoring. We’re never going to be a team that leads the league in scoring. We’re not going to play break-neck speed enough. And the way we defend, it takes teams a little longer to make shots.” Welcoming CSUThe Raiders have a 15-7 record against Central State, although only five of those games were played after WSU became a Division I program in 1987. In those games, WSU is 4-1, with the loss 94-91 in 1991, the first year of the Nutter Center. Central State is now an NCAA Division II school. “I think it will be a very competitive game,” Brownell said. “Central State will be excited about this opportunity to play us. Our guys will be excited about playing. This will be the first real live action in front of a crowd.” www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/wright-state-university-raiders/returning-raiders-impress-brownell-382843.html

Central State heads to Nutter Center to take on Wright State in exhibitionBy Marc Katz, Staff Writer Thursday, November 5, 2009 FAIRBORN — Central State basketball coach Doug Lewis Jr. knows the consequences of the exhibition game tonight, Nov. 5, at Wright State. “Regardless if we lose or win the game, it doesn’t count,” said Lewis, whose Marauders are in their second season as an NCAA Division II program. Still, while the Division I Raiders are looking forward to playing an opponent in front of a crowd, Central State is looking to be as impressive as possible. “The most important part for us is to get ready for our season,” said Lewis, whose team was 19-8 last season and 40-12 over the past two. “This year, we don’t want to just be good. We don’t just want to win 20 games. We want to go to the NCAA tournament. We want to test the guys early.” Wright State — 20-13 last season — should provide that test, even though the Raiders will be playing without their two best guards, Vaughn Duggins and John David Gardner. Duggins is suspended and Gardner is injured, but WSU would seem to be deep enough to give CSU problems, especially inside. “Depth is always going to be a factor,” Lewis said, “especially on the front line. We have three big players who won’t be eligible until December. We’re going to be thin up front until then.” That might be good news to WSU’s 6-foot-9 Ronnie Thomas, 6-7 Cory Cooperwood, 6-8 Cooper Land and 6-7 newcomer Paul Darkwa. The Raiders are looking forward to getting more out of their inside players. Central State counters with its three leading scorers from last season — 6-1 guard Robert Harris of Trotwood, 6-6 forward Gino Smith and 5-5 point guard Cole Prophet. Harris is a transfer from Urbana and Smith from Eastern Michigan. Prophet is so small, he was ignored by almost everyone when he played at Sandusky High School. “If he was 6 feet, he’d be at North Carolina or somewhere,” Lewis gushed. “He’s unbelievable. If you can play, it doesn’t matter how small you are.” www.daytondailynews.com/dayton-sports/wright-state-university-raiders/central-state-heads-to-nutter-center-to-take-on-wright-state-in-exhibition-385967.html

I was going to comment on UWM's slim victory in their exhibition, but we have not played ours yet lol. We better not throw in a clunker like some of these schools are.
