The Nov. 13 game is against Belmont of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Nov. 14 contest is against Wright State of the Horizon League. Both of those games begin at 4:30 p.m. On Nov. 15, the Vikings take on Washington in a 7 p.m. game televised by Fox Sports Net Northwest.
Portland State picked up a 108-65 exhibition victory over Western Oregon on Nov. 4. That marked the debut of new Viking Head Coach Tyler Geving. Now in his fifth season on the Park Blocks, Geving moves over one seat on the Viking bench in 2009-10, from associate head coach to head coach. He replaces the departed Ken Bone, who is now the head coach at Washington State.
The Vikings are coming off a second straight 23-10 season and second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Geving plans to maintain that level of success as his tenure officially begins this weekend in Seattle.
The AIA Classic opens a challenging preseason for the Vikings that includes three games with Pac-10 teams, three with West Coast Conference teams, and one against a WAC school on the road. Challenging? Yes, but the Vikings have proven to do well away from home the past two seasons, going 10-9 and 11-9 in road and neutral site games.
PSU’s home opener is Nov. 21 against Cal Poly. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m. at the Stott Center.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE VIKINGSGeving welcomes back five letterwinners and two starters from last year’s team. Four of the five returners saw significant action in 2008-09, including SR F Jamie Jones (9.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 59% FG), SR F Julius Thomas (6.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 64% FG), SR G Dominic Waters (11.4 ppg, 2.9 apg, 60 3-pt FG, 2nd team All-Big Sky Conference), and JR F Phil Nelson (10.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 57 3-pt FG). Also returning is JR G/F Paul Guede, who was expected to be a big contributor last year, but played in only two games due to a broken foot.
Jones and Nelson are the returning starters and expected to be even more productive than last year. Waters and Thomas served as the sixth and seventh men off the bench, but played starter minutes and produced big for the Vikings. Those two, expected to start in 2009-10, will also serve as team captains.
A talented recruiting class brought in by Geving - who has been in charge of recruiting since coming to PSU in 2005 - includes JR Gs Melvin Jones (5-10) and Alonzo Brandon (6-1), JR F Phillip Thomas (6-8) and FR G Chris Harriel (6-4).
NEW HEAD COACH TYLER GEVINGTyler Geving takes over as Head Coach of the Portland State basketball program after being an assistant and associate head coach at Portland State for the past four years. Geving played a major role in the Vikings’ climb to two straight trips to the NCAA tournament over the past two seasons. The Vikings have compiled a 77-49 record over the last four seasons. Geving’s primary duties as first assistant under former Coach Ken Bone were as recruiting coordinator and running the team defense.
Geving has been in collegiate coaching for 15 seasons, but his new position with Portland State is his first head coaching job. He is a 1996 graduate of Central Washington.

VIKING FAST BREAKSSCHEDULE NOTES: Portland State has three games with Pac-10 teams, three with West Coast Conference teams, and one against a WAC school on the road in the preseason. Challenging? Yes, but the Vikings have proven to do well away from home the past two seasons, going 10-9 and 11-9 in road and neutral site games. PSU is 25-2 at home over the last two years... in all, PSU plays seven 20-win teams from 2008-09 (and two 19-win teams)... the Big Sky Conference schedule has the usual 16-game format. However, the league has gone to a Friday-Saturday format this season. Due to scheduling quirks and some televised games, the Vikings will face that back-to-back situation just three times this season.
WINNING LINES
• Portland State is coming off back-to-back 23-10 season. Those tie for the most wins in a season in school history... with 65 wins over the past three seasons (19, 23, 23), the Vikings have their best three-season win total in school history.
• The Vikings are 39-13 since the start of the calendar year of 2008. PSU is 46-20 over the past two seasons.
• Portland State was 12-1 at home in 2008-09 and 25-2 at home over the last two seasons... PSU has won seven straight home games.
• The Vikings were 11-9 away from home, 7-7 in road games, 4-2 in neutral site games last season... PSU went 4-4 in Big Sky road games.
• Portland State is 22-20 all-time in overtime games.
• PSU has gone 93-29 in 121 games at the Stott Center since the 1996-97 season. Including home games at Memorial Coliseum (12-6) and the Rose Garden (19-9), the Vikings are 124-44 at home over the past 13 seasons.
THE SAME, ONLY DIFFERENT: Portland State had exactly the same record in 2008-09 as it had in 2007-08: 23-10. That gave the Vikings back-to-back 20 win seasons for the first time in school history as well as the two best Division I seasons in school history.
MORE ON 20-20: In each of the last two years both the PSU men’s and women’s basketball teams won 20 games in the same season. The men were 23-10, and the women were 22-9 in 2007-08. In 2008-09, they did it again, as the Viking men and women were both 23-10, with the men playing in the NCAA Tournament and the women reaching the WNIT, winning a first-round game... the 20-20 feat has now been accomplished by a Big Sky Conference school 13 times in the 21-year men’s/women’s history of the conference. Including the years BSC women played in the Mountain West Conference (1982-88), it has occurred 18 times... PSU’s two teams combined to go 24-3 at home and had a 25-7 Big Sky record last season... PSU’s men’s and women’s teams were a combined 26-2 at home and 25-7 in Big Sky Conference games in 2007-08... the two teams are 91-39 over the past two seasons.
THREES WITH EASE: The Portland State Vikings ranked fourth in the nation in three-point field goals made per game (9.6) last year. The Vikings entered the NCAA Tournament as the team with the most three-pointers made among the 65 competing. The Vikings led the Big Sky in three-pointers made for the second season in a row... with 317 three-pointers made in 2008-09, PSU broke the school and Big Sky records of 294 set in 2007-08... with 835 attempts, PSU also broke the school and Big Sky record for attempts (749), set in ‘07-’08 as well.
ANOTHER WAY TO WIN: Portland State led the Big Sky Conference with 7.42 steals per game in 2008-09. The Vikings averaged 8.38 steals in league contests... PSU had 245 steals and broke the school record of 234 in one season (1977-78).
BIG SKY STUFF: The Portland State basketball program reached its 100th victory as a member of the Big Sky Conference on Jan. 18, 2009 at Northern Colorado. Portland State is now 102-96 all-time in Big Sky Conference regular season games in 13 seasons. Including a 6-6 Big Sky Tournament record, PSU is 108-102 in all 210 Big Sky games... Portland State led the Big Sky Conference in scoring (73.4), scoring margin (+4.8), steals (7.42), turnover margin (+0.54), three-point field goals made (9.61) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.11)... Jeremiah Dominguez led the Big Sky in three-point field goals made per game (2.87) for the second year in a row... in conference games only, PSU led in assists (15.81), steals (8.38), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.14) and three-point field goals made (10.06).
