Wolf, I may be wrong cause that was 4 years ago, but I am pretty sure that they agreed @ $160,000 but we would only give him a 1 year deal and he wanted 5 years but would settle for 4 year extension. Our AD at the time had a friend of his from North Dakota St. that he wanted to put in as our head coach. The AD told Brownell that if he messed up 1 time he was out. He didn't like the fact that he would socialize with boosters, alumni, etc..

My number is from a conversation I had with Brownell while playing golf last summer. He said that UNCW was willing to match WSU's financial offer, but they only wanted to give him a 2 year contract. WSU was willing to give him a multi-year deal at $210K.

UNCW has had some boosters step up with some big money to get rid of the old coach and make a run at a new one. The reason to leave is that recuriting to Wright State is almost impossible. With additional committment by Wilmington Brownell would be much better off to wait for the only one or two BCS jobs he would be interested in at UNCW than at WSU.

Brownell isn't going back to UNCW. UNCW fans may want it to happen but it's a pipedream.

I think I hate UNCW fans just about as much as I hate Butler fans after reading their message board. Thank god we don't have a fanbase like either one of these schools.

Guys i am a fan of Wright State only because you have fellow UNCW guys running the show. I know its a slim chance we get Brownell back at UNCW, but you never know what will happen. Things have to be perfect for him to think about leaving Wright State and coming back. If we were to somehow manage to get him back, you guys will be ok because Donlon is a great coach too. If we cant get Brownell, my first choice would be Donlon. 99% of the community loved Brownell and appreciated him, and i see you guys are happy to have him as well. I wish you guys much success because your school deserves the best. But Brownell was practically raised in Wilmington for the 12 years he was here. I would be a great story if he did comeback, but Wright State would be left in good hands with Donlon. Either guy back at UNCW would be a good fit. Goodluck the rest of the way, and beat Butler!!!!

I don't see him leaving WSU except for the BCS job he deserves. No offense to UNCW fans, but it doesn't make any sense to go back there except for sentimental reasons. He has already had success at 2 different programs. The next logical step is up, not backwards.

Donlon no contact with UNCWFeb 01, 2010 Bob Bonner With Benny Moss now out and Brooks Lee in as the interim head coach, UNCW fans everywhere are asking the question, who's next? It doesn't sound like it will be Billy Donlon. The former assistant and UNCW alumnus said that he has not been contacted by University officials and he hasn't expressed any interest in the vacancy to anyone at UNCW. "I have not been contacted nor have I contacted anyone expressing an interest in the head men's coaching position at UNCW." Donlon added, "My focus is on assisting Coach Brownell and Wright State in earning our 4th straight 20 Win Season and our 2nd trip to the NCAA tournament." Donlon made the move to Wright State with Brad Brownell after the 2006 season. In his four years in Dayton, Ohio the Raiders own a 78-41 overall record and a 5-and-2 mark in Horizon League tournament play. While in Wilmington the coaching staff owned an 83-40 record with two visits to the NCAA tournament. "The Wilmington community deserves to be back at the top of the CAA consistently playing and advancing in the NCAA tournament." www.wect.com/Global/story.asp?S=11916726

I'm not sure where this irrational hatred of UNCW fans is coming from; perhaps it was from several years ago when some of us bashed your program when Brownell left for there, but that doesn't explain why you STILL call us all idiots. You got our coach and are successful, where does that warrant taking potshots at us?
The only conclusion I can come to is that you think we might be coming after your coach again and are hopeful he won't be leaving. While I don't think that will happen, some of your arguments why that won't happen are ridiculous. You have better facilities, sure. But several donors have already stated publically that money won't be an issue when it comes to hiring a new coach, and that anywhere from $350,000 to $500,000 will be provided towards that goal.
Don't trash our program just because of the bad blood over coaches. After all, YOU guys were the winners in all of this. I have a lot of respect for Wright State and the Horizon League, and I expected better.

Perhaps it's from your message board currently bashing WSU, the city of Dayton, and the State of Ohio. Go back to your own message board and read the crap your fans are writing. Personally, I do get offended by your fans calling my hometown a dump over and over again. I get offended when your fans, including yourself, don't acknowledge that there is anything here worth staying for besides a big paycheck and facilities. It makes no sense for him to leave. He wants to go to a BCS program. His next logical coaching step is to get a BCS job or a higher rated mid-major job that will help him get there. Going back to UNCW does not further that goal. He already proved that he can win there. It doesn't help his situation at all. You have donors willing to pay him more and build better facilities at UNCW. Why go back to UNCW when he already has those facilities here and can/will get a pay raise here equal to anything you can offer. On top of that he already has a university president and AD that are completely supportive to him. Our AD is very close friends with Brownell and their wives are best friends. You can't give him that. The fact that your fanbase does not acknowledge any of that and continues to bash us on your board does offend us.

I bet a few grand that UNCW is on Brownells list of schools that he could go to without penalty. Brownell's contract is public record. You can read it at the Dunbar library on campus. There are 2 schools in his contract that don't have to pay WSU a buyout. They are both located in Indiana and both are BCS programs.
