BCS COACHING MOVEMENT ROUNDUP Tuesday, April 20, 2010
We’re going to try and keep up with all the coaching movement – and we’ll start with the BCS league. Here are some of the coaching changes thus far:
ACC
Boston College – Steve Donahue has hired Joe Jones, who left his head spot at Columbia, and also brought Nat Graham and Woody Kampmann (director of basketball operations) from Cornell. Donahue, after watching John Gallagher leave for the head spot at Hartford, hired Niagara assistant Akbar Waheed to round out his staff.
Clemson – Brad Brownell is bringing on Dick Bender in some capacity and also has brought Mike Winiecki and Lucas McKay (video) with him from Wright State. Sources said he has also hired Earl Grant from Wichita State.
Virginia Tech – Assistant Ryan Odom has left to take a similar spot with new Charlotte coach Alan Major.
Wake Forest – New coach Jeff Bzdelik has retained Jeff Battle, Rusty LaRue and director of basketball operations Walt Corbean and also brought on former Kentucky player Mark Pope, who was an administrative spot at Georgia last season, as an assistant.
BIG 12
Colorado – Northern Colorado coach Tad Boyle got the job on Monday. His top assistant at Northern Colorado, B.J. Hill, will take over for Boyle.
Iowa State – Assistant Daniyal Robinson went to Houston and Director of basketball operations Ron Smith retired. Jeff Rutter was moved from assistant to the DBO spot by Greg McDermott.
Kansas – Director of basketball operations Brett Ballard took the head job at NAIA Baker University. Sources indicate that former Missouri State head coach Barry Hinson could wind up taking Ballard’s spot.
Nebraska – Assistant Walter Roese left to become the associate head coach on Gib Arnold’s staff at Hawaii.
Oklahoma – Sooners assistant Oronde Taliaferro resigned.
BIG EAST
DePaul – Clemson coach Oliver Purnell has taken over and sources indicate he has retained Billy Garrett and brought on Ron Bradley and Josh Posterino (DBO) from Clemson.
Pittsburgh – Jamie Dixon’s associate coach, Tom Herrion, left for the head coach at Marshall. No replacement yet.
Rutgers – Fred Hill and the school finally separated.
Seton Hall – New coach Kevin Willard brought Shaheen Holloway, Dan McHale and Steve Sauers (DBO) with him from Iona.
St. John’s – New coach Steve Lavin has hired Tony Chiles (Drexel) and his former player from UCLA, Rico Hines (Golden State Warriors staff). Lavin is, per sources, looking at bringing on Mike Dunlap for the final spot.
BIG TEN
Indiana – Roshown McLeod was let go towards the end of the season and his spot hasn’t been filled yet – although sources indicate that ex-Colorado associate head coach Steve McClain is the front-runner.
Iowa – New coach Fran McCaffery has brought Siena assistant with him to the Big Ten, but the rest of the staff remains uncertain.
Michigan – John Beilein shook up his staff, letting Jerry Dunn and John Mahoney go and promoted Jeff Meyer from an administrative role to full-time assistant.
Ohio State – Assistant Alan Major got the head job at Charlotte and former Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson was hired to replace Major.
PAC-10
Oregon – All we know here is that Ernie Kent is gone.
UCLA – Donny Daniels left to take a similar spot with Mark Few at Gonzaga and director of basketball operations Joe Hillock is in the mix for the head women’s job at Cal State Northridge.
USC – Kevin O’Neill has promoted Bob Cantu to associate head coach, has moved Tony Miller from strength and conditioning coach to assistant and also hired Dieter Horton out of Antelope Valley.
SEC
Arkansas – John Pelphrey demoted Issac Brown and still hasn’t named a replacement.
Auburn – New coach Tony Barbee brought his entire staff with him from UTEP: Randall Dickey, Tony Madlock, Milt Wagner and Mike Babul (DBO).
Georgia – Mark Fox lost Mark Pope, who was in an administrative role, to a full-time assistant at Wake Forest.
South Carolina – Darrin Horn hired Orlando Early, who resigned from his head coaching job at Louisiana-Monroe, and bumped Cypheus Bunton down to director of player development. Director of basketball operations L.J. Hepp left.
