New candidate emerges in coaching search By Jeff Goodman FoxSports.com Posted Apr 12, 2010 According to multiple sources, Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury has become Clemson’s latest target. Stansbury, 50, has been the head coach of the Bulldogs for the past dozen seasons – and made six NCAA tournament appearances. Stansbury has a 256-138 career mark – including a 24-12 record and an NIT appearance this past season. Stansbury was an assistant for eight years under Richard Williams prior to taking over in 1998. The Bulldogs will lose seniors Jarvis Varnardo and Barry Stewart off this year’s team. Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips and associate AD Bill D’Andrea have interviewed several candidates in the last few days: Brad Brownell (Wright State); Blaine Taylor (Old Dominion); Cliff Warren (Jacksonville); Mike Young (Wofford), former BC head coach Al Skinner and Clemson associate head coach Ron Bradley. clemson.scout.com/2/961626.html

Hey when the Brownell to Miss St and Brownell to Colorado rumors start can we just keep it in this thread. All of these threads about Brownell to Iowa, to Auburn, to Clemson, to Wake Forest are getting embarassing.

willie, not sure if anything can be done about it, but at some point bb needs to put a stop to the interviews and get back to coaching the raiders. and class, if that group of recruits was topped off with a post player that could step in and start from day 1 it could well make it the best raider recruiting class ever.

Mississippi State's Stansbury turns down Clemson The Clemson Sports Blog By Greg Wallace Posted April 12, 2010 Clemson’s search to replace Oliver Purnell took a surprising turn Monday – but it apparently is a false alarm. According to FoxSports.com and The Sporting News, Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury emerged as a very serious candidate for Clemson’s vacant men’s basketball coaching position, which opened last week when Oliver Purnell bolted for DePaul. But FoxSports.com and The (Jackson, Ms.) Clarion-Ledger reported that Stansbury will stay at Mississippi State; TSN had reported earlier today that Stansbury was “considering an offer” to become the Tigers’ next head coach. Stansbury, 50, reportedly makes $1.2 million annually from Mississippi State; Purnell made $1.35 million in annual salary, plus an additional $250,000 in annual deferred money (which would have been available as a $1.5 million lump-sum payment in 2015). He has spent 20 years at MSU, the last 12 as the Bulldogs’ head coach. He’s 255-136 as head coach, leading the Dawgs to six NCAA Tournament appearances; he was also the associate head coach for MSU’s lone Final Four appearance in 1996. Over the last week, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips and associate AD Bill D’Andrea have interviewed six coaches for the vacancy – former Boston College coach Al Skinner, Wright State’s Brad Brownell, Jacksonville’s Cliff Warren, Old Dominion’s Blaine Taylor and Wofford’s Mike Young, as well as interim coach Ron Bradley. Last Tuesday, Phillips said he’d like to have the process wrapped up within two weeks. He is the third sitting head coach to spurn interest from Clemson; Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel and Baylor coach Scott Drew also reportedly turned down overtures. So who's next? Don't be surprised if Clemson turns toward Western Kentucky's Ken McDonald or VCU's Shaka Smart; I also see Brad Brownell as a very viable candidate. www.independentmail.com/blogs/greg-wallace/2010/apr/12/rick_stansbury/

keithfromxenia, 2 pieces of information that you should know so that you can get off your soapbox regarding coach Brownell not recruiting:
1. Aloysius Henry was on campus Friday and Saturday. You can find his profile in the recruiting board that Big D does such a great job keeping up to date. There is recruiting being done by the staff.
2. April 1-7 (last week) as well as April 12-15(this week) is a recruiting "Dead" period. No coach can leave campus to have contact with prospects during this time. Coach Brownell could be interviewing in China during this period and it is not distracting him from evaluating/contacting prospects.

As long as Brownell's name is being thrown out there for every job openning in the country, we are a lame duck program when it comes to recruiting. No good recruit is going to sign with us until they know who our coach is going to be next year. The late signing period starts in 2 days. We are screwed until Clemson announces who their next coach is, because Brownell has taken the stance that he does not comment on open coaching jobs. That means he cannot do his job for us EFFECTIVELY until those jobs are filled.

Well if he is going to go, I hope he goes soon so that we can get our next coach in place fast. I know we all hope that Donlon will be promoted, but that isn't guaranteed. The sooner Brownell makes a decision the sooner we can try to get Donlon signed on as our next coach. Then we can worry about keeping our team and recruiting class in place. With a whole lot of luck, we might still be able to do all of that and sign a JUCO post. If it does happen, thanks for what you have done for us coach Brownell and good luck at Clemson.

I would assume that once Clemson officially offers Brownell the job, he will take it. That's the good news. It should at least happen fast. The sooner they wrap him up, the sooner we can start trying to replace him. I think we all assume that WSU will try to hire Donlon and I believe he will take the job if offered. The only bad thing is that I don't know how quickly we can offer the job to Donlon. Since this is a state funded university, we might have to post the job and at least go through some token interviews before we can offer it to Donlon. Bob Grant might even want to do a national search before he offers it to Donlon. I do not know for sure. If we do hire Donlon, I don't think we will loose any of our current players or incoming recruits. Donlon was involved in each of their recruitment specifically for that reason. The bad news is this probably killed our late period recruiting for a post player. The late signing period starts Wednesday. I doubt the players we have been pursuing will wait until we are able to get our coaching situation finalized to make their decisions.
Good luck at Clemson Coach Brownell. We all appreciate what you have done for us here the last 4 years.

tristatehomepage.com/fulltext/?nxd_id=147695Former Harrison Warrior Brownell to Clemson??? Print Article Reported by: Doug Kufner Tuesday, April 13 2010 Fox Seven's Drew Amman reported Monday at 6:00 that Brownell had interviewed for the Clemson opening and is a top candidate. Now CBS Sports is reporting that Brownell will likely be offered the Clemson position and will probably accept the school's offer as early as Tuesday. Brownell would replace Oliver Purnell who left Clemson for DePaul last week. Doug Kufner left a message for Wright State Athletics Director Bob Grant Monday afternoon in an effort to confirm Brownell's possible departure. Grant had yet to return Kufner's call as of Monday Night. A former UE Assistant under Jim Crews, Brownell has had five straight seasons of twenty or more wins. He's won 167 games in four years at Wright State and guided the Raiders to the 2006 Horizon League Title and an NCAA Tournament bid. Before moving to Dayton, Ohio, Brownell previously served as the Head Coach at UNC-Willmington for four years, where he led the Seahawks to two NCAA Tournaments. Stay tuned to Fox 7 Sports for further details.

www.independentmail.com/blogs/greg-wallace/2010/apr/12/brad_brownell/Brownell looking more and more like Tigers' man The Clemson Sports Blog By Greg Wallace Posted April 12, 2010 at 11:29 p.m. Email Discuss Share » Digg Facebook LinkedIn MySpace Print A A A Monday began with Clemson missing on a prime target in its quest to replace Oliver Purnell as head basketball coach. By this time tomorrow, we might be talking about his replacement. CBSSports.com and TigersIllustrated.com reported Monday night that Terry Don Phillips had zeroed in on Wright State coach Brad Brownell as his prime candidate to replace Purnell, who left for DePaul last week. Brownell and Phillips reportedly spoke Monday night and are expected to do so again today - and Brownell could be on the verge of being offered the job. Brownell has an 84-45 record at Wright State, with four straight 20-win seasons. He has three NCAA appearances in eight years as a head coach at Wright State and UNC-Wilmington. They were all first-round defeats, but one was a 2003 last-second loss to Maryland a year after the Terrapins' national-title run. Over the last week, Phillips and associate AD Bill D’Andrea have interviewed seven coaches for the vacancy — Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury, former Boston College coach Al Skinner, Brownell, Jacksonville’s Cliff Warren, Old Dominion’s Blaine Taylor and Wofford’s Mike Young, as well as interim coach Ron Bradley. Monday morning, Stansbury appeared on the verge of leaving MSU - where he has been for 20 years as an assistant and head coach - for Clemson. But he decided to stay with the Bulldogs, even without receiving a raise. “At the end of the day, there was no question in the end what I felt,” Stansbury told Mississippi reporters. “It’s nice, maybe, to have been wanted. It’s nice to have heard some people talk about things, but at the end of the day, there was no way I could walk away from Mississippi State.” He added: "that (Clemson) made (the offer) very intriguing,” he said. “Very intriguing.” Last Tuesday, Phillips said he’d like to have the process wrapped up within two weeks. Hiring Brownell would get it done in a week. Ironically, Wright State is located in Dayton, minutes from the University of Dayton, where Phillips plucked Purnell from in 2003. Completing the circle of life, Brownwell was an assistant at UNC-W under Jerry Wainwright. He got the head position after Wainwright left for Richmond in 2002. Wainwright is now out of work - he was fired in January at - wait for it - DePaul. Is this a splashy hire? No. But Brownell is a solid hire, with room to grow - and possibly take the program to the "next level" that Purnell seemingly had so much trouble taking it to.

Good luck at Clemson coach. Hope you have continued success there.
For WSU, I think we need to make a quick move and hire Donlon. Bob Grant has known that Brownell has been looking for quite some time so he should be prepared for this.
