Raider Pride said this in another thread and I could not agree more. God I hope Donlon can man up and admit to himself that his game plan for the season isn't working and makes some changes. The biggest of which is giving Young some legit playing time. Why own a sports car if you are just going to keep it in a garage. Young is a muscle car that needs to be on the road. Fans say he doesn't get playing time because he picks up too many fouls. That's crazy talk. Play the man every second of every game you can the remainder of the season. Any time you sit him because you are worried about him picking up fouls is wasted time. Play him until he fouls out of every game if that is what it takes. wrightstate.proboards.com/thread/456/game-25-green-bay

People said the same thing about Young last season too. That is until Darling went down for the year and Donlon started playing Young the lion share of minutes down the stretch, in the HL tournament and the CBI. He did a fine job of staying out of foul trouble then.

Not really, the last 19 games of the season he averaged 3.1 fouls per game which his season average was 2.8. If you take away 5 of those games it bumps up to 3.7 In the HL Championship game he got 2 fouls within a minute less than 10 minutes into the game. In the CBI semifinal he once again got 2 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game.

I specifically said when Young took over for Cole Darling after he went down for the season, Young did a fine job of staying out of foul trouble. That is true. Cole's last game was against Valpo on 2/12/13. In the final 10 games of the year Young averaged 27.1 minutes a game and 2.8 fouls a game. The most important stat was that he DID NOT FOUL OUT OF ANY OF THOSE GAMES. That is all that matters. He played significant minutes and did not foul out once. statsheet.com/mcb/players/player/wright-state/jerran-young/game_stats?season=2012-2013&stat_type=1&game_type=1&chart1=minutes&chart2=points&chart3=assists&chart4=rebounds_total&chart5=

I honestly don't care if he fouled out of every one of those games. Like my quote above, it is a waste of his talent to have him on the bench out of fear that he is going to foul out. Let him foul out, but for the love of god maximize every minute he has on the court before he does so. Having him on the bench 1/2 of every game because you are afraid he is going to pick up those last 2 fouls is asinine.

This essentially could have been the difference between and NCAA berth or even making it to the CBI championship

There is no proof that he would have fouled out of any of those games if Donlon would have left him on the court. The fact that he played the majority of the second half without fouling out shows that Donlon should have rolled the dice and played him more in the first half too. Like everything else he does in coaching, Donlon was too conservative.

Like everything else he does in coaching, Donlon was too conservative. It's coaching 101, if a guy gets 2 fouls in the 1st half 9 times out of 10 he's going to be on the bench the rest of the half and that's how Donlon coaches, and there is proof below: *The following list is times at when players picked up their 2nd foul, when they were taken out and how much time they played the rest of the half Cole Darling UWM 2nd foul came at 4:07, didn’t play the rest of the half CSU 2nd foul came at 9:49, didn’t play the rest of the half UMKC 2nd foul came at 8:37, didn’t play the rest of the half Mia 2nd foul came at 14:02, didn’t play the rest of the half VMI 2nd foul came at 6:44, didn’t play the rest of the half USA 2nd foul came at 8:55, didn’t play the rest of the half Dep 2nd foul came at 12:33, played 1:30 the rest of the half AJ Pacher GB – Picked up 2nd foul at 12:11, played only 2:30 the rest of the half UMKC – Picked up 2nd foul at 8:27, didn’t play the rest of the half Mia – Picked up 2nd foul at 7:00, didn’t play the rest of the half VMI – Picked up 2nd foul at 10:15 didn’t play the rest of the half MSU – Picked up 2nd foul at 8:21, played 0:05 the rest of the half HBU – Picked up 2nd foul at 5:20, didn’t play the rest of the half DEP – Picked up 2nd foul at 10:35, didn’t play the rest of the half GTown- Picked up 2nd foul at 14:37, 3rd foul at 6:53, and fouled out at 14:35 in the 2nd half You need your best players on the court at the end of the game, and that's what Donlon wants (obviously). There have only been 6 games this year where Jerran hasn't been on the court within the last 2 minutes of the game. Georgetown (Down by 21 with 3:35), Manchester (blowout), Houston Baptist, Eastern Illinois (Blowout), Bowling Green (fouled out), Milwaukee at Home (taken out at 2:32, up by 13)

It's coaching 101, if a guy gets 2 fouls in the 1st half 9 times out of 10 he's going to be on the bench the rest of the half That's not coaching 101. Many coaches will sit a player if they have picked up their second foul in the first half, but that isn't set in stone. Many will sit them for several minutes and have a talk with them about the importance of not picking up their third foul before half time and then put them back in. Conservative coaches sit them the rest of the half. There are quite a few coaches that will play their top player with 2 fouls if they think the situation dictates it.

I was looking for a clip of the alley oop from yesterday and came across this video posted two days ago.
Two questions: 1. How did we snag this guy? 2. How could we have wasted him?
If we're this frustrated I can't imagine how he must feel.

Was a crime that wasn't on the Top 10 yesterday. I dvrd the game...and watched it several times. Behind the head no-look ally-oops don't happen often, even in the association. But in regards to your question...how could we have wasted him...
um...hi. Have you met our coach?

Donlon has an ego problem. For anyone that hasn't watched the type of players he likes to recruit and play, he likes kids that remind him of himself. He likes undersized, average athletes that are gym rats. That is what he was and that is what he likes to coach. I honestly think he subconsciously doesn't want guys like Young to succeed because he relies on his talent more than he does discipline and Donlon can't stand that because he never had that talent. When it comes down to it, it's just plain jealously.
Many of our fans have heard stories about Donlon's first year here under Brownell. We had so few players on our roster that Donlon had to work with the scout team for drills/scrimmages. He had some epic battles with DaShaun Wood. What many fans do not know is that Donlon acted like a jackass to Wood most of the year. Even though he was doing his job and helping Wood become the best player he could be, he couldn't deal with the fact the Wood was better than him.

Does anyone else think that Donlon, when he has his glasses and gets all pissed off on the sideline, looks like Chris Kattan's coach character from SNL?

Your story does not surprise me in the least. One player we had that left last year was Bramanti. I can't figure out why he left? He must have been home sick or could not get along with team mates or something because he fit Donlon's game so well.
If Jerran played for Green Bay they would be up another level of basketball.
Jerran's 3 point shooting % is creeping up in the last few games. He is shooting 50%+ from the field and has improved his defense play this year. He will be playing ball next year somewhere and making money doing it as a bench player for the Raiders.

That jackass comment was made by DaShaun Wood himself. Sorry, but I'll take his word over yours any day of the week.
