It would interesting to see if Young gets an invite or shows up at a NBA combine after this year. He needs to play 30 minutes not 18-23.

I could see him playing in the NBA developmental league and earning his way onto an NBA roster eventually if he can get more consistent with his outside shot. If not, he will make a lot of money playing overseas for a long time.

I hope some of those NBA scouts that came to the Nutter Center to see Alex Brown went home with an impression of how special Young could be if he was playing for a coach that knew how to utilize his talents. If we had played him 25-30 minutes a game last season and this season in a system that utilized his skill set I think we would be talking about where he would be taken in the draft this year.

hhgreen I think this deserves it's own thread so I moved it from the Green Bay game thread.

Definitely needs to improve as a 3 point shooter to get a look from the league.

Definitely needs to improve as a 3 point shooter to get a look from the league. I don't think so. He isn't shooting well from three this year at 25%. A lot of that is due to how he was shooting early in the season when he was trying to play with that high ankle sprain. That injury really affected his shot. Since we have been in HL play, he has been shooting really well again. If you look at his stats from last year, he was 41.2% from 3. That is good enough for the NBA.

I think Young could make it to the NBA by working his way through the developmental league for a few season, but he really should just play overseas. He will have no problem earning a big paycheck in Europe and will probably enjoy himself much more than trying to earn his way to be the last guy off the bench of an NBA roster.

I think Young has a pro future, most likely Europe. But if he can get on a nba developmental league team, he could get a shot at NBA if he performs well there. JY makes spectacular NBA type plays, but he needs to work on a lot if things to make the NBA, including his consistency on each play.
He needs a consistent 3 point shot, which I believe he can do. Because of his size, he's going to need to be able take guys on the dribble. I think his ball handling is not at an NBA level yet, so he needs to work on his handle. Finally, the NBA is a pick and roll, or pick and pop league, and this is where I think JY needs the most work, he needs to improve his defense. From what I've seen this year, Jerran has trouble getting through screens because of his positioning. If he can shore those 3 things up, he certainly has a chance, but because if his size, he has little room for error. Ask DWood about that.

That's ok Big D. There has not been a player like JY here in a while. Like some people have said if he gets a chance he could go to the developmental league. Deshaun Wood has been the last player that stood out for us, but he did not have size. Wood was the go to guy in the final seconds.

JY to me seems like he would be a great hustle guy in the NBA if he made a roster. He'd still have to bulk up some too, in addition to everything else everybody here said. There are not many players that athletic in Europe besides the US guys. Many teams have quotas on how many US players they can have, including the tier-1 leagues in Spain, Greece, Italy, Russia (IMO they have Europe's best leagues from top to bottom)--I think in Greece it's two or three US players (ironically, before going to Italy, Bill Edwards played for a few years with AEK in Greece and starred). Regardless, I think JY would definitely need to improve his shooting and ball-handling to stick in those top league's. There are still great players in those leagues (Josh Childress far from dominated when he went to Olympiakos from the NBA), and they expect any US player to be THE guy, not a role player.

There's no way he gets an NBA camp invite out of the HL unless he makes all league. With the minutes Donlon's playing that's not going to happen.

Jerran Young is a legitimate professional player. He should be starting and playing 30 minutes a game. He has way too much athletic ability to be coming off the bench. However, we all know as faithful raider followers that Billy Donlon loathes offense

Am I the only one that thinks Young turns the ball over too much and takes some ridiculous bad shots?
ps I know it is my first post, but actually felt passionate about this one.

Am I the only one that thinks Young turns the ball over too much and takes some ridiculous bad shots? ps I know it is my first post, but actually felt passionate about this one. 51% fg 0.8 A/TO ratio (7th in the team. 6th if you don't count seldom-used Howell) 1.92 steals 1.08 blocks Plus 3-4 tipped balls/game and altered shots on defense. Those defensive stats make up for his turnovers. PS: welcome to the board!
