Interesting read on the other boards. Nobody really thinks we're going to be in this tournament. NIU seems confident they are going to sweep the whole thing.
In the game tonight it looks like there graduated their top two scorers and their best interior player, yet all expect to win tonight.
Obviously being overlooked due to our record last year, without doing much research as to why.
Hopefully we surprise some people this weekend, and maybe, just maybe, we can have a season without stupid nagging injuries.

Obviously being overlooked due to our record last year, without doing much research as to why. Hopefully we surprise some people this weekend, and maybe, just maybe, we can have a season without stupid nagging injuries. I thought the same thing when reading the other boards, however Vegas doesn't think so in our first game against South Dakota. We opened as 4.5 point favorites and now we are 6 to 7 point favorites according to the Vegas books. I think the key to beating the Coyotes is to guard the 3pt line, and limit the offensive rebounds. According to Coach Donlon all 5 players will put up 3s for SD, which means a lot of long rebounds. If last year is any indication, South Dakota goes after the offensive rebound pretty good. A third (33% or 11.64/game) of all their rebounds last year were offensive rebounds. Just to contrast that stat, last year we only allowed our opponents to get 28% of their rebounds on the offensive end. And WSU only got 26% (or 7.48/game) of their total rebounds on the offensive glass, (which is understandable since coach doesn't emphasize offensive rebounding over transition defense.)

To give an idea of where the teams in the tourney are predicted in the preseason. Here is a chart of 5 of the most commonly used rating systems (not including the rip which has no games to predict with). Again this is preseason so they carry very little weight, but still something worth looking at for fun to get an idea of the teams we are facing this weekend. TEAM | KenPom | Sagarin | Massey | Sports Illustrated | Team Rankings | Average | WSU | 126 | 177 | 247 | 176 | 171 | 179 | South Dakota | 281 | 223 | 223 | 221 | 280 | 246 | Northern Illinois | 184 | 217 | 209 | 239 | 226 | 215 | CS Northridge | 298 | 228 | 274 | 326 | 296 | 284 |
From looking at the predictions of these sites and taking the averages. It looks like each difference in the average is worth about .09 points (Home team gets +3). I guess we will see how well the preseason predictions are. So for example SD vs WSU is a difference of 67 which makes WSU about a 6 point favorite. WSU vs CSUN is a difference of 105, so WSU would be favored by about 9.5 pts WSU vs NI (which gets +3pts for being at home) is a 36 difference which makes WSU 3pt favorites at a neutral site, but becomes a pickem game at Northern Illinois since the home team gets pts.

Justin Mitchell's grandfather passed away ... he won't play tonight. Hoping to get him back for the rest of the tournament.
They also said one of our guys has a concussion and won't play. Didn't catch who that was. It was right when I turned on the radio feed. Bad news followed by bad news.
I hope Justin is OK. Stinks that he lost his grandfather.

Jim Brown talking about how we're very shorthanded to begin the season. Oh well, nothing that we're not used to.

Karena is the one who has the concussion. Suffered in practice earlier this week. Out tonight, might play tomorrow.
Mortensen out with a foot injury similar to Biggie Minnis (also out).
Mitchell will return for the next 2 games, but is out tonight.
Wow.

8-6 Raiders first media timeout. Yoho with 5 points. Alan Vest was first sub in the game and drained his first college shot -- a 3 ball.

If we didn't have 5 players out for this game (Minnis, Mitchell, Karena, S.Davis, Mortensen) I wonder if they would have tried to redshirt him.

23-21 Raiders, under 8 timeout.
Hughes started his first game as a freshman ... and nailed his first shot of his career (like Vest, a 3-ball).
A lot of WSU players are getting involved scoring-wise. Alstork scored, Neel scored. Benzinger scored.

At the half, South Dakota leads Wright State 32-30.
8 points for Alstork, 7 for Yoho. A lot of turnovers from WSU.

Man, Jim Brown sounds none too happy. You can tell how agitated he is. Can't blame him -- this sounds like it hasn't been a fun game to watch. But we're right there -- just need to finish strong.
We're down 44-37 at the first media timeout of second half.
