jp, how was the turnout for the radio show? there just does not seem to be much conversation on either board about the raiders. if louden isn't ready our program would benefit long term from red shirting him. big guys especially can benefit from the extra year.

Ugh. We were going to be short on big men even with Love. Without him this year? Yikes. We'll be going 5-guard lineup a lot.
Oh well, I'm just glad to have Nagy and be done with Donlon. The future is bright for WSU basketball.

Good story, thanks for posting. And I've changed my viewpoint here: I think it would be wise to redshirt Love to give him the 5th year that Coach Nagy talks about. Do you want him playing as a true freshman when he likely won't get many minutes? Or do you want him playing as a fifth-year senior when he'll be playing all the time and 'could be a dominant player" in Coach Nagy's words. That's very cerebral of our new coach -- I love the fact he's already thinking four years down the line and building something really special here.

I'm against red-shirting somebody of his size, mainly because there aren't many players his size out there with his athleticism. It would be fine if we could guarantee that he would stay at Wright State for 5 years, but there are too many players graduating and taking their fifth year elsewhere at a bigger school. I would say if he was a project player then red-shirt him, but I think he can play now if he stays healthy. It will be a learning year, but it gives us an extra body inside for fouls and we can keep him for 4 years of playing. If we red-shirt him, I think we only get 3 years out of him. Now if he was smart, he would ask to be red-shirted as it will make him a better player in 5 years, but being purely selfish, I hope we play him now.

I initially had the same feeling guys. But Coach Nagy really got my attention when he made the comparison of whether WSU wanted to use Love as a true freshman when he likely wouldn't play much anyway, or use him as a fifth-year senior when he had the chance to be a "dominant" player. I don't think you worry about things like whether a guy is going to transfer to another program if he becomes good. Most players who are treated well get comfortable at the university/program they are at and don't want to transfer. Coach Nagy strikes me as the kind of coach that has good relationships with his players, which will cut down on the amount of transfers we'll see.
So, give me Love as a fifth-year senior who could be "dominant" (to use Coach Nagy's words) over playing him as a true freshman when he probably isn't going to contribute much anyway. Furthermore, do we really think this is an NCAA Tourney team this year? I don't. I think next year we can get there, but I think we're a year away from being a true contender for the HL crown. Redshirting Love seems wise to me after hearing Nagy's comments. But like you guys, at first, I was disappointed to hear he might redshirt, so I know where you're coming from.

We are a rebuilding team this year so we won't be contending for a HL championship or NCAA tournament appearance. What we are doing this year is trying to re-energize our fan base and build for the future. we aren't going to build any momentum with fans if we have a 10-20 team this year. We could get fans excited about the future if we at least have a .500 record and show them an exciting brand of basketball that they can look forward to when we get the horses to run Nagys system. We are going to have a much easier time recruiting for the future if we are a .500 team vs a team with a losing record as well. If Lou can help us at all this year, I want him to play. You cannot play at this level with only 3 players 6-7 or taller especially when 1 is injury prone and the other 2 are completely unproven at this level. Lou may struggle this year but he will get better from playing good D1 competition. He isn't going to improve by red shirting and only getting to practice against Parker. No offense to Parker but he is one of the least offensive player we have. He isn't going to improve Lou's defense. Finally, we are NO WHERE near being a contender next year either. Donlon left this roster very bare and devoid of size and talent and 2 of the players we expect to be big contributors this year are seniors. Nagy is going to need a few really good recruiting cycles to get us to where we need to be. His first recruiting class was not good enough. So far this years recruiting class isn't any better. We aren't going to be successful until we bring in HL level talent or above even if we have a great coach. This roster is mostly made up of guys that only had low major offers or no offers at all. Realistically, we have a long way to go to have the type of program we want.

big d, i see your first but i really think the key is that coach does not think he will contribute much this year. as you said we are a couple of years, a couple of recruiting classes, away from being at the level we want to be. it would great to have him as a 4th year junior and 5th year senior when that happens. so i do think it is a good idea to redshirt louden. i also think red shirting vest would be a good idea as well.
also, what radio station is our coach's show on?

I completely respect and understand what you are saying, but after Nagy talked about Love's situation, I changed my mind. I hear where he's coming from.
