Do we think Joylynn Brown is next? Reading the DDN article it sounds like that is the tentative plan and I hope that isn’t true. It’s the easy and cheap hire but I’m concerned it isn’t the right choice. I think they need to post the job and do a real national search. If Brown ends up being the best candidate, that’s one thing but I have concerns that she is qualified to do the 2 main functions we need out of our next AD. We need someone that has experience hiring coaches and we need a big time fundraiser. Bob Grant has made all of the hiring decisions since he has been here and overall has done a great job. Brown has no track record to look at in that regards. I don’t want a rookie AD making those choices. We can turn into IUPUI in a heartbeat if our AD makes a bunch of bad hires. We all know the financial woes we have had in recent years. We can only except the university to provide so much Financial support to the athletic department. We need an AD that can bring in donor money and I have been underwhelmed with Bob Grant’s ability to do this in the past and by extension I’m not sure if Brown will be any better. I really hope we can find an up-and-coming A.D. from a lower division that has had successful programs and has shown the ability to fund raise. Wright State should be an attractive job for those types of candidates. We shouldn’t just give the job to someone currently in the department just because they are currently in the department when there are better candidates available. Brown has been with us for a very long time. If she truly is a good candidate to become a head A.D. why hasn’t another D1 program hired her away from us? I agree with this. I would like an outside hire. Like you said everyone knows the financial woes of the university we love. From everything I have heard things are trending upwards! I would think the job would be desirable with all the local alumni in the area and the amount of local businesses. I think that there are a lot of NIL opportunities that would make things more desirable for recruits. There is a lot of potential in the university we just gotta find a way to use it!

Former Raider Basketball Coach Ed Schilling said this about Bob Grant after he announced his retirement: "What tremendous job and man Bob did and is."

I think Bob Grant did a really good job. I won't get into the baseball program conversation as much as I'm not aware of any controversy there, although he kept having to replace the Baseball coach when they'd move on and the baseball program just kept being really good with every replacement.
I read that Brown also oversees "programming for staff and student-athletes on diversity, equity and inclusion." Hmm interesting, well will see what happens with what direction they decide to eventually go.

Is this a president pick with a rubber stamp by the board? Or is the board going to exert itself here?

I hope the decision rests with President Brewer. She respects the program and is involved with athletics. She's done a good job in managing the university through a rough few years. I trust her judgement.
As far as BG is concerned, I have the utmost respect for the job he's done. He's been transparent with everyone and the programs have been squeaky clean. Ed Schilling was a mistake but that happened on Mike Cusack's watch. Biancardi would have done well at Wright State but that's a different story. Brownell was a great hire but he had his eye on the door from the day he was hired. Donlon was a forced error. Nagy was a major win despite the criticisms concerning transfer and game management. Individuals may not like it but Scott has won a lot of games and will win a lot more.

BG did a phenomenal job, and his track record the last 5 years shows it. Not just in the revenue sport, but the minor sports as well. Volleyball has dominated thru 2 coaches, and has the only "at large" berth, and the first NCAA tourney victory. Womens basketball won an NCAA game against a 4 seed, and has also carried on thru 3 coaches. Mens basketball has won the league regular season so much that we raised the expectations, and now we criticize them for merely finishing near the top (also has an NCAA tourney victory). Baseball has dominated thru 3 coaches, with 5 straight league titles, and several wins in the tourney. I believe soccer has also won an NCAA tourney game. BG hired all of these coaches, and gave them what they needed to succeed. And all have run clean programs, that graduated their student athletes.
10-15 years ago in every sport we would just hope to get into the NCAA tourney once a decade or so, but knew we would get blown out when we got there. Now being able to win a game when we get there is an achievable stretch goal in multiple sports.
The only thing BG did not get done was get us into a better league, but I blame that on the prior administration above him getting the university into a bad financial situation. I also blame them for the elimination of several sports, which BG had be the one to put in place.
I can only hope the next AD is as effective as Bob Grant.

The wrong hire could further wreck this program. Hopefully it's a home run and it takes us to new heights. But as I watch the selection show and see a local team get an at large bid, I feel like we just can't get out of irrelevance in this area.

It appears to me that Grant went through the motions of DEI to keep people in the university at bay that like that stuff. So bringing up if Brown is a true believer in DEI or if she put it on the back shelf, is a legit question.

The day that Bob Grant announced his retirement, Nebraska's AD Trev Alberts abruptly announced he was leaving to take the same job at Texas A & M. Today Nebraska announced that Washington’s Troy Dannen will be its next athletic director.
So, how long does it take Wright State to find Bob's replacement? My guess WSU is in no hurry to replace him, since he will probably hang around until his replacement is hired and Wright State doesn't have a $9.25 million/year football coach they have to keep happy. So, probably a new AD is on board early summer?

Not to say he's done a bad job necessarily but after being on staff for 30 years, it's time.

If you had anything to do with the university in the last decade, you’d know that what they are talking about matters a great deal. The university has made a lot of important personal decision based more on promoting diversity than it has on hiring the most qualified individual. In this specific case, if the university just promotes Brown without even doing a national search it will be based a great deal on promoting a woman to the AD position vs the most qualified candidate. She has absolutely no experience to justify getting the job vs anyone else that has served as a head AD at any other university who has more qualifications for the job. The university has spent a lot time tooting it’s effort to hire and promote people based on diversity.

I am not advocating this, but if there was ever a time that Wright St would shutter the Athletic Dept, it would be now. These non revenue generating sports are getting very expensive to operate.

That is just plain asinine and incorrect. We spend much less on athletics now than we did a decade ago. And for every dollar Wright State spend on athletics it gets that back 10 fold in media exposure. Bob Grant loves to share that stat with the board every year when they look at the university budget. For that reason alone it is worth it for the university to finances Athletics.

I am not at all against doing a national search and hope they do one (doubt they will unless they legally have to considering time and cost), but these days everyone seems to cry and whine about DEI and use it as a strawman argument when there is no logical connection or they have no idea what it actually even is. I do however see the logic of promoting within and Brown would certainly be someone who knows the ins and outs better than anyone else besides Grant.
