FAIRBORN — Brad Brownell made one promise at Monday's Wright State basketball luncheon for media and fans at the Nutter Center.
"This will be the last year you'll see me on a billboard, I'll tell you that," said Brownell, reserved, if not shy.
The new Raiders coach referred to billboards posted around town with his picture.
When he introduced his wife, Paula, he said, "She might be on the billboard next year."
Brownell also talked a little about his motion offense, which uses multiple possibilities on possessions instead of set plays.
"We're trying to teach the kids to make plays on their own," Brownell said.
• A few injuries have hindered practice a little. Redshirt sophomore transfer Ronnie Thomas — who was eligible to practice but not play in games — had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday. He'll be out about four months. Senior forward Drew Burleson has missed a couple of practices with a sprained left ankle, and freshman Eric Stevenson has a broken little finger on his left (nonshooting) hand.
• Someone asked Brownell about the toughness of his practices, and Burleson broke in, "During the first couple of workouts, I needed a media timeout."
• The men's team, coming off a 13-15 season, opens with a home exhibition against Indianapolis on Nov. 2, then plays six of its first seven regular-season games on the road, beginning with Miami University on Nov. 11.
• Horizon League Commissioner Jon LeCrone, a Vandalia native, said CSTV will Webcast all men's and women's basketball games again this season at no cost to consumers. The nine-school league pays about $400,000 for the exposure, not quite $45,000 per school.
• Jaron Taylor, who played for the Raiders the last two seasons and graduated in June, is close to accepting a graduate assistant's job at Georgia Southern.
