Depleted Seahawks struggle to fill spots

Barbara Kidd is quite the jokester, but the secretary for the UNCW women's basketball team wasn't talking this week about a laughing matter.
"We've got so many injuries, I might have to get out there and start playing for the team," she said. "Wouldn't that be something if I started playing for the team?"
Indeed, it would be something else.
And the way things are going, Kidd might have to suit up. UNCW (5-10, 1-3 CAA) has lost a handful of players this season. First, Cydnei Stoudt was redshirted for a sore hip. Teammate Candace Walker recently joined the redshirt ranks, thanks to a stress fracture. And now Stephanie Fernald has been added to the injury mix. Fernald was scheduled to have season-ending back surgery this week to repair herniated disks. And the Seahawks lost another player a few weeks ago, when walkon Mallory Wyrick transferred to Wright State.
So, where does that leave UNCW? With just nine players in practice.
"We're just trying to make the best of the situation," said UNCW coach Ann Hancock. "With all these players going down to injuries, it just limits what you can do in practice. If you have players that play 39 or 40 minutes in a game, you don't want to do too much in practice because you don't want do wear 'em down."
As a result, Hancock has cut practice time. At the beginning of the season, the Seahawks practiced three hours, but that number has dwindled to two hours. Some days the team won't go more than 90 minutes.
