Raiders Sign Indiana Native Nov. 20, 2007 Jeron Lewis, a 6-8, 283-pound sophomore forward at Northeastern Junior College in Colorado, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Wright State University next fall, WSU head coach Brad Brownell announced today. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native graduated from Fort Wayne's Northside High School in 2006 where he averaged 13.4 rebounds, 17.9 points and 1.1 blocks as a senior. That season, he led the state of Indiana in rebounding. Former Raider greats Keion Brooks and Vernard Hollins also graduated from Northside. "We are very happy with the addition of Jeron to our program," Brownell said. "We felt we needed to fill the middle with the losses of Jordan Pleiman and Scottie Wilson and Jeron is a true post player with good hands and is an excellent rebounder. He plays at a well-respected junior college under coach Eddie Trenkle who has his programs in contention for the national title on a regular basis." At Northeastern so far this season, he has averaged 10.1 points and 7.4 rebounds through five contests. wsuraiders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/112007aaa.html

Plainsmen Basketball Practice Begins Oct. 3, 2007 The NJC basketball team opened up their official season with practice on Monday afternoon in the Bank of Colorado Event Center. The Plainsmen have high expectations for the upcoming season, coming off one of the best records in school history. NJC finished the year with a record of 34-2, ranked 4th in the Nation and a 7th place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. Head Coach Eddie Trenkle, in his second season, feels this team could be just as successful, if not better than last year's squad. "We have some kids back with a lot of experience and ability. If our new kids grow and learn what it takes to be successful at this level, we should be every bit as good as we were last year." Two starters returning from last year's National Tournament team are Mike Dominguez and Troy Smith. Both saw a substantial amount of time last year and were major contributors to the success of the team. Dominguez averaged nearly 10 points per game shooting a scorching 47% from three point land, while Troy averaged 10 points per contest with a 37% field goal percentage. Other returning players from last year's team are 5'10" red shirt sophomore guard DeRay Wilson, who is a transfer from State Fair College, 6'7" forward, AJ Wilson (no relation to DeRay), who is a transfer from College of Southern Idaho, 6'1" guard, Tom Chott, 6'4" guard, Kylor Dossett, 6'2" guard Curtis Ashe, and 6'7" forward, Eric Miller, who gained a lot of experience, but is coming off an injury. Northeastern is blessed to have some new transfers that have some experience at the college level including 6'2" point guard Lawrence Tyson, a transfer from Cal State Northridge and 6'8" center Jeron Lewis from Wabash CC. Incoming freshman for the Plainsmen include, 6'7" center DeMario Partee from Racine, Wisconsin, 6'4" forward Adam Rabih from Denver, Colorado, 6'2" guard Alex Garcia Mendoza from El Fuerte, Mexico, 6'8" center Justin Schneider from Ft. Collins, Colorado, and 6'1" guard Ryan Railey from Woodlin Park, Colorado. The season is underway and the goals are set for another successful campaign for NJC. Coach Trenkle is geared up and believes it should be a great year. "Our post play is unproven up to this point, but our guards will be solid early. I believe our inside game could be as good as or better than we had last season. We will have to wait and see how things pan out." The Plainsmen home first game will be the alumni game scheduled for October 27th at 7:30pm in Jackson Edwards Arena. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/100307aaa.html

Plainsmen 2-0 In Bank Of Colorado Shootout Nov. 20, 2007 The No. 8-ranked Plainsmen got things started with a 82-67 victory against Miles City Community College to begin tournament play Friday. Northeastern was only up 42-40 at halftime, before the second half explosion. NJC got a huge game from sophomore Troy Smith, who cashed in a game-high 30 points on 13-19 shooting, including three from downtown. Smith also contributed with eight rebounds and four steals in 35 minutes of action. Sophomore Mike Dominguez had 12 points on four three-pointers, while Lawrence Tyson, Jaron Lewis and A.J. Wilson each had eight points for NJC. Saturday against the Pueblo All-Stars, the team needed a late push to earn a 110-94 victory to close out tournament play. Pueblo had a 52-47 lead at halftime and led halfway through the second half before NJC began pulling away. "Pueblo is a tough team to play against, they are really athletic and can shoot the ball extremely well. You can't let guys with experience and talent get on a roll shooting wise or you could find yourself in trouble", stated Head Coach Eddie Trenkle. Scoring was much more balanced in this contest, with DeRay Wilson leading the way with 28 points for his team. Dominguez hit five three-pointers, on his way to 22 points. Smith added 16, while Tyson and Lewis both had 12 points off the bench.Northeastern will travel to Cheyenne today to play Laramie County Community College at 6 p.m. The Plainsmen return home this weekend for tournament action Friday and Saturday night's. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/112007aaa.html

Plainsmen Sweep Weekend Improve to 8-0 Nov. 27, 2007 STERLING -- The Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen claimed two more wins in the early season, this time at the Ramada Roundball Classic Tournament at the Bank of Colorado Event Center this weekend. Friday, the ranked No. 7 Plainsmen earned a 117-65 victory against F.E. Warren and defeated the Pueblo All-Stars for the second time in as many weeks with a 91-87 victory. NJC is now 8-0 on the year. Stats were not made available before press time, but there is no need for it because it was a full team effort Friday. The game was out of hand early, with the team opening a 18-0 lead to start the contest. NJC knew they were going to be in a tough game because their Saturday opponent was very familiar. Northeastern had defeated the Pueblo All-Stars 110-94 two weekend's ago as part of the Bank of Colorado Shootout Invitational. The game was played nearly the same, with NJC on top yet again. The home team had a 54-43 lead at halftime, unlike last time, when they were down at the half. Through eight games, that is the only contest the Plainsmen didn't lead at the half. Pueblo made a run late, but similar to last time, they ran out of gas. NJC shot 52 percent from the field and shot 81 percent from the free throw line. Leading the way for Northeastern was Jaron Lewis, who had 18 points and four rebounds. Alex Garcia added 12 points and three steals, while big man A.J Wilson also added 12 points in 14 minutes of work. Mike Dominguez had 11 points on three from deep. Point guard DeRay Wilson had six points and eight assists on Saturday. Northeastern will hit the road on Wednesday to play Eastern Wyoming College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game. The team returns home this weekend for the Pepsi Classic when they host College of Eastern Utah Friday and Air Force Prep Saturday. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/112707aaa.html

He really looks like he carries his weight well. I was originally a little worried when I saw how big he was in the WSU press release. He could be an important piece of the puzzle for our success next year.

The biggest negative in his stats is that he shoots 65.6 from the field, but only 52.9 from the free throw line. He also has only 2 assists compared to 14 TOs so far. If he wants to see the court on a Coach Brownell coached team he will need to improve his passing and his free throw shooting. I do like his upside though. We have several post players that can pass and shoot well. We needed to add someone with some size to help control the boards and set monster picks. At the very least, Lewis should already be able to do that. If he improves on those other areas, he could be a real steal for us.

Make It 11 In A Row For NJC Dec. 3, 2007 STERLING -- The count is now at 11 for the sixth-ranked Plainsmen basketball team after two more wins at the Pepsi Classic held at the Bank of Colorado Event Center over the weekend. Friday night, the men hooked up for a comfortable 83-68 victory against College of Eastern Utah to open up tournament play. NJC would wrap things up with a 71-48 triumph against Air Force Prep, thanks to a big second half. Northeastern has four more games before hitting the winter break. First thing's first: The Plainsmen looked strong against their opening opponent, finishing the game with four players in double-digits. NJC had a comfortable 35-28 first half lead on their way to the victory. The team was out-rebounded by four, but made it up in other ways, including 27 points from off the bench. Leading the way for Northeastern was DeRay Wilson, who had 18 points to lead all scorers as well as dishing out three assists. Troy Smith added 17 points on two three-pointers while Mike Dominguez was close behind with 16 points on three three-pointers. Freshman Alex Garcia came off the bench for 11 points and eight rebounds. Saturday, the team appeared to struggle on the offensive end, only shooting 35 percent from the field. Up and down play that saw them have a lead and trail by a couple points ended with a two-point lead at halftime. In the second half, NJC came out playing like they knew how and pushed to outscore Air Force Prep 45-24 to come away on top. Smith had a big game for the Plainsmen, recording 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds, while passing for five assists. Sophomore Jaron Lewis did some work down low, coming off the bench for 12 points and five rebounds in the win. Dominguez finished in double-figures as well with 10 points, and adding six rebounds and four steals. NJC plays again Tuesday at home against North Platte Community College. It will be the final home game until Jan. 7 when they host Frank Phillips College. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/120407aaa.html

NJC still rollin' Dec. 5, 2007 By Anthony Arroyo Journal-Advocate sports reporter STERLING -- Usually the Plainsmen of Northeastern Junior College are a second half team, but the work they put in the first half was good enough to come away with a 73-56 victory against North Platte Community College Tuesday. NJC continues to roll, as the team is now a perfect 12-0 and jumped up to No. 4 in the nation. The unique part of this team, head coached by Eddie Trenkle, is that they are able to figure out team's quickly and adapt even quicker. The game was highlighted very early in the contest after a putback dunk by sophomore Eric Miller brought the fans to their feet for the early 2-0 lead. Northeastern would actually trail 11-8 early on, but the team was quick to put it into gear. A steal on the defensive end of the ball, concluded with big man Jeron Lewis' breakaway dunk gave his team a 14-13 lead. They would never look back. NJC went on a 17-3 run, capped off with back-to-back three pointers by sophomores Mike Dominguez and Troy Smith to extend their lead to 15. The Plainsmen would lead 34-20 at the half. North Platte didn't help their own cause, only shooting 25 percent in the first half alone. Both teams found the basket more often in the second half, but NJC still managed to outscore their opponent by three points to finish off with the 17-point victory. Leading scorer for the Plainsmen was Smith, with 16 points on 8-14 shooting, including two from deep. Dominguez was perfect from the field, shooting 7-7 from the field and three three-pointers for 11 points. DeRay Wilson also put in some work, finishing with 11 points and six assists. Alex Garcia and DeMario Partee had nine and eight respectably off the bench. As a team, NJC had 22 points off their bench and out-rebounded North Platte 44-33. Northeastern will travel to the Salt Lake Classic this weekend and will have their biggest challenge up to date. Thursday, NJC will face North Idaho, who is 7-0 and ranked No. 19 in the nation at 3:30 p.m. Friday, the Plainsmen will play against Colorado Northwestern Community College at 3:30 p.m., and will conclude with Salt Lake Community College, a team that is 9-0 and ranked eight in the nation. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/120507aac.html

Plainsmen Drop First Game of Season Dec. 7, 2007 By Anthony Arroyo Journal-Advocate sports reporter SALT LAKE CITY -- The Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen jumped out to an early 15-3 lead against North Idaho and held tough to a 40-38 advantage at halftime, before dropping their first game of the year, 87-81, Thursday night at the Salt Lake Classic. Northeastern, who was ranked fourth in the nation coming into the tournament, is now 12-1 overall. Head coach Eddie Trenkle mentioned through a text message that the team didn't play well defensively and couldn't get stops when they needed them. NJC only missed six free throws in 23 attempts, but North Idaho made 29 free throws, with 17 of them coming in the second half. The team had a lead all through the first had and the beginning parts of the second half. The game was tied at 45 for the first time and once again at 49 with 16:14 to play in the game. Northeastern would play from behind and actually see the deficit reach 12 before cutting that to five with 46 seconds remaining. Free throws down the stretch by their opponent would hurt their chances for a comeback. North Idaho shot 56 percent from the field against Northeastern's 48. Jeron Lewis had a big day for the Plainsmen, with 14 of his team high 20 points coming in the second half. Sophomore Troy Smith had 16 points, while Alex Garcia added 15 off the bench. Mike Dominguez and Lawrence Tyson each finished the contest with nine apiece. NJC will continue tournament action with Colorado Northwestern Community College today at 3:30 p.m. and wrap things up Saturday against Salt Lake Community College at 7:30 p.m. The tournament will wrap up the first part of the season, sending the players on winter break. NJC returns to Sterling Jan. 7 when they host Frank Phillips College at the Bank of Colorado Event Center for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off. gonjc.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/recaps/120707aaa.html

Jeron Lewis had a big day for the Plainsmen, with 14 of his team high 20 points coming in the second half. Nice to see Jeron is capable of scoring. With the graduation of JAP next year Jeron just might find himself anchoring our post next season. With his size and sheer girth he would be a difficult match up for most teams in the HL. Our guards will be awesome next year with VD, TB, WG, & JDG so it is imperative that we get some folks ready to step into the post position. Believe it or not I see Scott Grote playing the 4 next year. At 6-6 and 220 lbs he is already bigger then Scottie and I think will be a more effective scorer. Only time will tell...........

I think next year's team has the makings of something special. The only real weakness we have this year is experience, especially with our back up post players. Next year we have the makings of a very well balanced and diverse team. In the post, we have legit size in Lewis and Ronnie Thomas. And we have a young, raw, and athletic Kyle Pressley waiting in the wing. Some posters on the other message board were down on Ronnie after the Valpo game. It is way too early to judge him. He hasn't played ball in 2 years and is playing with a still healing broken foot. His conditioning isn't where it needs to be. He needs to knock off some rust from not playing in 2 years and he needs to gel with his teammates. I think everyone's opinion of Ronnie is going to improve as the season wears on. He can score from inside and he is a decent 3 pt shooter. At power forward we have a few options in Gavin Horne, Scott Grote, Cooper Land, and even Kyle Pressley. Gavin has shown that he can be a good defender, but he need to step up his offense if he wants to continue to see a lot of minutes. Grote has the versatility to play the 3 or 4 and would be a hard match up at the 4 because of his great 3 point shooting. Cooper Land is getting a hard introduction to D1 ball right now. He doesn't have the bulk to bang with the big boys yet and he is still adjusting to the speed of the game. I think Cooper can be a player for us if he continues to develop his skills and keeps hitting the weight room. We will have one of the better combo of guards next year. The lumps we are taking this year against the more experienced teams like Valpo are going to pay dividends for us latter in the year and into next year.

BigD, I agree with EVERYTHING you just said. As far as Ronnie, I do not know how anyone can even make a judgment on him, it looks like he can't even walk without pain. Once that foot gets better I think he will start becoming more of a factor in games.
