UDM Basketball Coach Watson Takes Medical LeaveJanuary 7, 2008 University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball head coach Perry Watson announced today he is taking an indefinite leave of absence from his post for medical reasons. Associate head coach Kevin Mondro will serve as the interim head coach in Watson's absence, effective immediately. Mondro will assume all on-court responsibilities in games and daily practice sessions. Watson will continue to remain involved with the basketball program in an administrative role while also monitoring the Titan players' academic progress during his absence. Current assistant coaches Carlos Briggs and Garland Mance will continue in their roles with the team. In his 15th season at UDM, Watson has a 258-185 career record. He is the second-winningest head coach in Titan history behind only Bob Calihan. He has guided two teams to the NCAA Tournament (1998 and 1999) and two more to the NIT (2001 and 2002). The Titans are next in action on Thursday evening when Cleveland State visits Calihan Hall (7:05 p.m.). detroittitans.com/mbasketball.jsp?id=1199734521144

Mon, Jan 7, 2008 Watson Might Not Return to TitansDon't be surprised if Perry Watson doesn't return to coach the University of Detroit Titans. The school announced that he is leaving the team indefinitely for medical reasons. However, the dirty secret is that Watson was under intense pressure from alumni, boosters and former players to change the way he ran the program. Watson refused. I don't know if he was forced out. But I am not certain Watson will be welcomed back if he decides to return to coaching. I have been in contact with some boosters and they were looking to buy Watson out. They were frustrated with his decision to remain a half court team that focused on defense rather than light up the scoreboard and recruit better players. They believe Watson could not get top recruits and stopped trying. He has not had a winning season in four seasons and Titans are off to another rough start. Watson is a victim of his own success. He is competing against himself and right now is failing. The wolves are after him and I just think the school did not want to fire him and he did not want to quit. So he has drifted off into the sunset. info.detnews.com/redesign/blogs/terryfosterblog/index.cfm
