SALUKIS: Indiana shooting guard picks SIUAug 22, 2006 By paul klee, The southern If Brandon Wood can play basketball like he takes a test, the Southern Illinois University men's program has nabbed a good one. Wood, a senior at Kokomo (Ind.) High School, gave a verbal commitment to SIU coach Chris Lowery late Sunday, the prep standout said in a telephone interview. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound shooting guard tabbed the Missouri Valley Conference school from a list that once included Kent State, Wright State and American."They (SIU) were the first team that started recruiting me," said Wood, who scored a remarkable 1,400 on the SAT. "I had a few choices, but they have been recruiting me the hardest. It definitely seemed like it was meant to be." SIU saw promise in Wood early in his high school career. The coaching staff extended a scholarship offer before he played a game as a junior. Wood is known as a shooter. He described himself by saying, "I like to drive, take it to the basket. I like the mid-range game." Wood said he averaged about 18 points per game this summer for his AAU team, the CAPS All-Stars. He's the third Class of 2007 player to commit to SIU and said he will sign a letter of intent during the national signing period in November.
