Induction ceremonies to be held on February 7th
Nov. 1, 2008
This year's Wright State University Hall of Fame class will be remembered in many special ways as Raider Director of Athletics Bob Grant announced this year inductees: the 1983 NCAA Championship basketball team, former basketball coach Jim Brown, and retired senior associate athletics director Paul Newman.
The inductees will be honored at a dinner Saturday, February 7 prior to the men's basketball game. More information will be distributed on this ceremony as the date draws closer.
"I couldn't be more excited about this year's Hall of Fame class - knowing our history and honoring those who helped shape what we are today is extremely important," said Grant. "This group, with Coach Brown, the '83 team and Paul Newman, all had a profoundly positive impact not only on athletics, but the entire university."
The 1983 men's basketball team won the NCAA Division II title and will be the first team inducted into the Hall of Fame. Wright State won the national title in only its 13th season of sponsoring the sport, boasting an overall record of 28-4. That team includes current WSU Hall of Fame members: head coach Ralph Underhill (2003), assistant coaches Bob Grote (1987) and John Ross (1986) and 2009 inductee Jim Brown as well as player Gary Monroe (1989). Also Mark Vest (1992) was a member of the team but redshirted after transferring. Other members include: TC Johnson, Steve Purcell, Anthony Bias, Tom Holzapfel, Andy Warner, Fred Moore, Phil Benninger, Rob Sanders, Eric Ernst, Theron Barbour, Mark McCormick, Mike Grote, Eric Ellis and support staff trainer David Shon, sports information director David Stahl and manager Rob Smock.
Paul Newman came to Wright State in 1985 as the top assistant to then athletics director Dr. Michael Cusack and retired in the summer of 2006. While with the Raiders, he spearheaded many initiatives, including the day-to-day activities of the athletic department, the Hall of Fame, gender equity issues, facilities as well as sitting or chairing numerous committees. Still active in many community activities, Newman is past president of the Fairborn Rotary and the Fairborn Chamber of Commerce. The Edinboro, Pennsylvania native is also a member of the Edinboro University Athletics Hall of Fame and the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame.
Jim Brown served as an assistant, associate and head coach for the Wright State men's basketball team for 27 years. He was an assistant coach under head coach John Ross, Wright State's first coach, and continued in that roll with head coaches Marcus Jackson and Ralph Underhill, becoming associate head coach in 1993. He then was appointed head coach for the 1996-97 season. Since leaving WSU, he has been the head coach at Northmont High School (he also teaches HPR 430 at WSU as well). During his time with the Raiders, the program moved from high school gyms, to the PE Building to the Nutter Center and from a Division II independent to a member of the MCC (now Horizon League) and Division I.
This class will bring the total in the Hall of Fame, which started in 1985 with the induction of the first director of athletics Don Mohr, to 62.
