Blount named Men's Basketball Player of the WeekNov. 17, 2008 INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago senior J.R. Blount has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 10-16. The selection marks Blount's second career weekly honor from the league office. A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Blount poured in a career-best and Gentile Center-record 42 points on Friday night against Rockhurst University. His total was the most ever by a Rambler in a season opener and Loyola's top scoring effort since Nov. 29, 2001. Blount made 12-of-22 attempts from the floor and 17-of-20 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes. Blount, who entered the 2008-09 campaign as a second-team All-Horizon League honoree, led Loyola in both scoring (15.1 pg) and assists (2.1 pg) a year ago. He is the first Rambler since 1990-93 to average at least 10 points in each of his first three collegiate seasons. Loyola returns to action on Monday at 9:30 p.m. ET. Mayo named Men's Basketball Player of the Week INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Illinois at Chicago senior Josh Mayo has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 17-23. The selection marks Mayo's fourth career weekly honor from the league office. A native of Merrillville, Ind., Mayo averaged 25.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals during a two-game stretch last week. The guard made 54 percent (14-for-26) from the field, 40 percent (6-for-15) from three-point range and all 16 of his free throw attempts. UIC improved to 1-2 on the young season by splitting its two contests last week. The Flames defeated Missouri Valley Conference opponent Northern Iowa on Wednesday (84-77), but fell to Big East foe DePaul on Saturday (67-63). Mayo, who paced the conference with 17.1 points per game as a junior last season, was recently named the Horizon League's 2008-09 Preseason Player of the Year. Mayo, an All-League first-team selection in 2007-08, entered the season 13th on UIC's career scoring charts with 1,207 points. He led all NCAA Division I players in three-point shooting for six straight weeks a year ago and finished the campaign nailing 47 percent (94-for-200) from beyond the arc. Bullock named Men's Basketball Player of the WeekDec. 1, 2008 INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State University senior J'Nathan Bullock has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 24-30. The selection marks Bullock's first career weekly honor from the League office. A native of Flint, Mich., Bullock averaged 16.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists during a three-game stretch last week. The forward made 46 percent (19-for-41) from the field and 67 percent (8-for-12) from the free throw line. Cleveland State improved to 4-2 on the season by winning all three of its contests in the CBE Classic's Miami Regional. The Vikings defeated St. Leo on Monday (72-62), Toledo on Tuesday (77-56) and Florida International on Wednesday (66-58). Bullock places 10th on CSU's all-time scoring list (1,318) and is just one of 10 players in school history to collect 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Bullock entered the 2008-09 season as a first-team All-Horizon League choice. He was named to the League's first team in 2007-08 after ranking sixth in the conference with a 14.8 scoring average. Cleveland State has three games on its schedule this week. The selection marks Hayward's first career weekly honor from the League office. A native of Brownsburg, Ind., Hayward averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists during a two-game stretch last week. The forward made 58 percent (15-for-26) from the field, including a sizzling 60 percent (12-for-20) from three-point range. Butler (8-1 overall, 2-0 HL) continues to sit atop the Horizon League standings after splitting a pair of recent road games. The Bulldogs defeated Bradley on Wednesday (79-71) before suffering their first loss at #21/21 Ohio State on Saturday (54-51). The setback at Ohio State snapped Butler's string of 10 straight regular-season wins over schools from the Bowl Championship Series conferences. Hayward posted a career-high 25 points and seven rebounds against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes after recording 20 points and six boards vs. the Braves. The victory over Syracuse, which came on a 60-foot runner by senior Cedric Jackson at the buzzer, was just CSU's third over an Associated Press Top 25 team in school history. The Vikings have now won three straight contests at the Carrier Dome after posting NCAA Tournament victories over Indiana and Saint Joseph's in 1986. The forward made 4-of-10 from the field and all 10 of his free throws against the Musketeers. The win was Butler's first over a nationally-ranked opponent since March 17, 2007, when the Bulldogs defeated #18 Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory was also Butler's first on a ranked opponent's homecourt since Dec. 19, 2001, when the Bulldogs knocked off #21 Ball State. Butler (10-1 overall, 2-0 Horizon League) is up to #25 in the Associated Press poll and just three spots shy of the ESPN/USA Today Top 25. The Bulldogs, who advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago, tallied a conference-record 30 wins and were nationally ranked for 19 consecutive weeks in 2007-08. Milwaukee's Avery Smith named Men's Basketball Player of the WeekJan. 5, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS --- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee senior guard Avery Smith has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 4. A native of Milwaukee, Smith averaged a League-best 21.5 points plus five rebounds and five assists per game in road victories last week at the University of Illinois at Chicago (71-66) and Loyola University Chicago (80-66). He scored a season-high 28 points in the win at Loyola Saturday, including 20 in the second half, for his fourth 20-point game of the season. Against UIC last Tuesday, Smith shared team scoring honors with 15 points, 10 of which came in the final 10 minutes as the Panthers put the game away. For the season, Smith ranks seventh in the Horizon League with 13.8 points per game and also averages 4.8 rebounds and three assists per contest. Milwaukee (8-5, 4-0 Horizon League) enters this week's action in first place in the League standings -- a half-game ahead of nationally-ranked Butler University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay -- and is 4-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season. Youngstown State's Kelvin Bright named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the WeekJan. 12, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS --- Youngstown State University junior guard Kelvin Bright has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 11. A native of Silver Spring, Md., Bright averaged 22.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Penguins, scoring 23 points in an 80-70 victory over the University of Illinois at Chicago Thursday and 22 in a 68-57 loss to Loyola University Chicago Saturday. For the week, Bright was 15-of-33 (.455) from the floor and 12-of-15 (.800) from the free-throw line while also averaging 2.5 assists per game. Bright ranks third in the League in scoring with 15.3 points per game and leads the Horizon League in conference action with 18.5 points per contest. He has scored in double figures in five of Youngstown State's six League games, including three with 20 or more. A native of Roseville, Minn., Eayrs averaged 17.7 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in three Panther victories last week. He started the week with 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in UWM's 70-59 victory Monday over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and finished it with a career-best 23 points and nine rebounds in a 77-75 win Saturday over preseason League favorite Cleveland State University. In between, he had eight points and nine rebounds Thursday in a 69-50 victory over Youngstown State University. For the week, Eayrs shot 45 percent (18-of-40) from the field, 36 percent (4-of-11) from three-point range and 87 percent (13-of-15) from the free-throw line while adding five steals and three assists. Of his 30 total rebounds, 13 were on the offensive end. The Panthers (12-6, 7-1 Horizon League) have won seven of their last eight games and enter the week in second place in the Horizon League standings, one-half game behind #16/17 Butler University (16-1, 7-0). Milwaukee will play at Valparaiso University Thursday and then will face Butler Saturday in Indianapolis. Green Bay's Ryan Tillema named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week Jan. 26, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS --- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay senior guard Ryan Tillema has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 25. A native of Randolph, Wis., Tillema averaged 20.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in a 2-1 week for Green Bay. It is his second career Horizon League player-of-the-week honor and first since December 2007. In an 83-76 victory Saturday at Valparaiso University, he poured in a career-high 36 points, the most by an individual in a League game this season. Tillema was 12-of-17 from the field and 9-of-11 from three-point range, including 7-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half when he had 24 points. His nine three-pointers tied the school record and helped the Phoenix match the team single-game mark of 14. Tillema also scored 15 points in a 91-53 victory over Houston Baptist University last Monday and had 10 in a 68-59 loss at #16/17 Butler University on Saturday. For the week, he shot 54 percent (21-of-39) from the floor, 50 percent (11-of-22) from three-point range and 73 percent (8-of-11) from the free-throw line. Tillema is averaging a team-high 17 points per game after returning from an injury that sidelined him for the first seven games. He would rank second in the Horizon League if he qualified with enough games played. In League games only, Tillema ranks second with 17.6 points per game to J'Nathan Bullock of Cleveland State University (18.6 ppg). The Phoenix (15-6, 7-2 Horizon League) enters the week in second place in the Horizon League standings, two games Butler (18-1, 9-0) and a half-game ahead of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (12-8, 7-3). Green Bay's Troy Cotton named Men's Basketball Player of the WeekFeb. 2, 2009 INDIANAPOLIS --- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay junior guard Troy Cotton has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 1. A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Cotton averaged 25 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in back-to-back victories last week that extended Green Bay's winning streak to three. Cotton scored a career-high 25 points last Wednesday in an 83-72 victory over the University of Illinois at Chicago, hitting 7-of-12 three-pointers to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. In an 87-68 win Saturday over Loyola University Chicago, he equaled that with 25 points and again shot 7-of-12 from three-point range. For the week, he made 56 percent (15-of-27) of his shots from the floor, including 58 percent (14-of-24) from three-point range, and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Cotton is averaging 12.4 points per game and shooting 42 percent (66-of-157) from beyond the arc this season. The Phoenix (17-6, 9-2 Horizon League) enters the week in second place in the Horizon League and hosts League-leading and nationally ranked Butler University (19-1, 10-0) Monday at the Resch Center.
