FAIRBORN | With three straight home games on the horizon in the Horizon League, the Wright State Raiders should be happy.
So far at home, they're 7-2, including 4-0 in the league. They also are on a five-game home winning streak. On the road, it's a different story, 3-7 with a 1-3 league record.
"I think we're a very immature basketball team when we're on the road," sophomore guard Zakee Boyd said. "When you're on the road, some teams let things slip. You've got a lot more things to overcome on the road. You might get a call one way at home and another way on the road."
At least the Raiders have been consistent at home, but even that doesn't mean much to coach Paul Biancardi with league-leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee visiting the Nutter Center tonight.
"Every night is different," Biancardi said. "The five games we won in a row mean nothing. It's tonight that means something. The Nutter Center has been friendly to us, and we want to keep it that way."
Wright State played at Milwaukee on Jan. 17 and led by as many as 11 points with five minutes to go. Milwaukee won by five.
It must have had something to do with playing on the road.
"On the road, you're out of your comfort zone," Biancardi said. "You have to learn how to play through whistles on the road."
Nothing, of course, is 100 percent.
Green Bay lost 86-56 at Milwaukee last week, then hosted Milwaukee and beat the Panthers 76-72 on Saturday.
But in between, Loyola went into Green Bay and won by 19. Monday night, Butler went to Green Bay and won by a stunning 23. That upset left Milwaukee alone in first place at 8-2 in the Horizon, with Green Bay second at 7-3. WSU, Illinois-Chicago and Detroit are at 5-4.
To get ready for the Milwaukee game, Biancardi wanted to forget about Saturday's loss at Cleveland State. The team bused home late Saturday, had Sunday off and met at the Nutter Center at 6:30 a.m. Monday to go over the game film.
Following a regular day of classes, the team reassembled at 1:30 p.m. to practice with Milwaukee on the mind.
Prior to Saturday, Milwaukee had won eight straight games, including four on the road. Now the Panthers come in with a one-game road losing streak. It's a streak the Raiders would like to extend.
