After the UIC loss, Cole Gentry is 5 consecutive FT makes away from breaking the school record of 47 set by Jesse Deister from 2000-2002.

I think people had an unrealistic expectation for this year and our being the pre-season favorite to finish 1st was ridiculous. We lost one good, young player for the year early on and haven't been able to overcome that. So...we lose ONE sophomore player and now we aren't very good? C'mon man! (We were still "named" the King after Winchester transferred...so we lost ONE player.) We should never have been the pre-season favorite in the first place...even WITH Hall playing all year.
We have very limited seniors...they are fine young men and terrific examples of the kind of people we want at WSU...they provide leadership and hustle but simply aren't good enough to be starters or play the kind of minutes they must play due to depth.
We have a transfer who I think has been surprised at how tough the league is - even though the league isn't close to being good. I think he will bounce back next year and be a very good player for us. Sometimes a guy needs a year to shake off a year's worth of rust...almost like a guy coming off an injury.
Our stud is experiencing the sophomore slump. It happens. I think he will be a monster next year when we have more help around him.
We are asking two true freshmen to contribute a lot (which will reap dividends next year) and our opponents have figured out that Gentry is the straw that stirs the drink...so harass Gentry and there is really no one else to pick up the slack - although I think Smith is going to be a good point guard.
All teams have untimely injuries and defections...but when you are still building your program and you lose a couple of key contributors you are going to struggle. I really like Coach Nagy and believe that he will get this program to succeed...next year will be his first complete roster of his guys. We will be ridiculously young...again...but our depth will be much better and all signs point to a reasonable expectation that the roster will be full of legit D1 talent.
I wish we were winning more and playing better...I'm a fan...but I'm not at all disappointed as my expectations were that we would struggle this year. So we are who I thought we'd be.

And our sophomore sensation has been battling an ankle injury, clearly affecting him, and one of our freshman had a traumatic experience clearly impacting him, and our only sized recruit we lost to injury. We didnt only lose Jaylon, we lost a whole lot. But if you don’t think Jaylon could’ve been our leading scorer, come on man. Not saying he would’ve been, but he certainly could’ve been. Not to mention how valuable he is as a defender. We were picked 1st when everyone thought Bill was Benzinger 2.0 from deep, which was true in a couple early games but not at all since. Mark was supposed to be a deep threat, Cole has been a deep threat a lot of the season but not the last couple games. Picking any other team to finish first would’ve made no sense. But yes, I agree that our struggles aren’t completely surprising. However there was plenty of cause to think we’d win. Hell, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think we clearly have the best and most stable coaching staff in the league and that alone is worth a ton in a tough season.

And if we aren’t picked to win the league next year as well, I will be even more surprised (pending transfers and such).

Don't get me wrong here on Hall. I think he's going to be a very good player going forward and we'd be much better with him in the mix. What I'm driving at regarding us being overrated in the preseason is that even WITH a healthy Hall, we'd still have precious little depth. Projecting a transfer from Drake as being the new Benzinger is just that...projection. Projecting that a senior defensive specialist would suddenly become a deep threat after not being one for three years is wishful thinking projection. Those are some faulty projections when choosing a pre-season conference favorite. As for next year's pre-season votes as judged after this year's performance...so far we've been swept by UIC, hammered by Detroit and beaten by NKU. Our D1 competition win/loss record is not good. Lastly and with all due respect...next year we will have Hall back, the two freshmen will be a year older, Basile will backup Love and be a second legit D1 big man, our two seniors will be our better offensive players, and our roster will no longer have questionable D1 talent starting and playing big minutes. But we will still be very young. If we can't beat UIC, Detroit or NKU this year...I don't see how we can be pre-season favorites going inro next year. JMO
