I realize it has only been one game but here are some of my extremely early observations.
- Bill Wampler has a super sweet shot! We all kind of knew he was a "shooter" but I have been pleasantly surprised how well he takes it to the rim. His dribble penetration was not expected. He will be tough too defend. He looks like the real deal.
- Loudon Love is just sooooo much fun to watch. He is such a force down low and a rebounding machine. With his presence in the paint to go along with our perimeter shooters will make us difficult to defend. I'm always amazed at how athletic Big Lou looks when he plays.
- Skylar Potter is a star in the making! He has a nice touch from the perimeter plus he can dribble drive to the rim seeming at will and he already looks physically like an upperclassman. Even if he isn't a "starter" I suspect he'll play "starter" minutes.
- Mark Hughes and Parker are both who they are.........really good defenders who can score if left open. Good teams need players like this to be successful. These two will do the dirty work and match up with the other teams best players. Mark will quietly get his 10 pts per game but he'll also work his butt off defensively.
- Cole Gentry is one of the best ball handlers I can remember at WSU. He seems to make really good decisions with the ball, has a super nice touch from the outside plus he seems to get into the lane at will and be able to dish off for an assist or shoot a little floater in the lane. He is quicker then most people think. He really does make this team go on the offensive end!
- I haven't mentioned Jayon Hall because he did not play Wednesday but based on last year alone he will be a major contributor this year. He is a super smooth player!
- Malachi Smith looked like he "belonged" on the court Wednesday evening. He seemed poised for a freshman!
- Grant Basile has been raved about by the coaches ever since he committed to playing at WSU. He saw limited minutes Wednesday but by the way the coaches gush over him I'm looking forward to big things from him as he adds weight and muscle. I think Grant, Skylar, and Malachi all have "all league" potential as they continue to develop.
If we can get consistent defense this year I think we have plenty of offensive fire power to exceed last years play.
Big challenge Saturday at Murray State!
