The box score tells you the story of this game. Everything is even, fouls, FTs, TOs. Everything except our shooting percentage. Well, really Penn State's. I don't care what age group you're in or what conference you play in. If your opponent shoots 20% better from the field than you and 25% better from 3s, you're going to lose the game. Simple as that.

Let's cut to the chase. We look like the returning champions of a lowly rated conference going up against a Power-5 program. We're intimated, scared, can't attack the press, stiff and nervous, and act like we haven't seen guards and wings built like Love, but with more athleticism and can shoot. If we win the HL we'll look like this with our #15 seed in March...again. We are a young team and we will get better as the season progresses. Not vs. P-5 programs. We have some excellent players for D II. We have some really good D I players and most of them are developing. Pete Gillen was wrong when he said (paraphrased), this (PSU) is the most athletic and physical team Wright State will face this year. IMHO, he's wrong and if he looked at WSU's schedule he would see Miss. State on there. In my opinion, Miss State is much more athletic, longer, and physical than Penn State. They were a preseason top-20 team for a reason and there was a reason Penn State wasn't. Talent. We don't have the backcourt to handle the pressure or defend the offense of P-5 backcourts, let alone top-20 P-5 backcourts. Mississippi State is going to be much more physical and aggressive in the backcourt than PSU was at anytime tonight. If tonight's beatdown is any indication of what's to come then we're in for a shellacking in Jackson. That said, it didn't appear to me we were prepared for a soft trapping zone in the backcourt or how to attack it. That's on Nagy and not the players. We had PSU in early foul trouble in each half, but only attempted 16 FT's for the entire game. 8 in each half. Hell, their best player got into foul trouble, but we didn't attack the rim. I blame the coaches on that...not a lack of D I or P-5 equivalent talent. With us in the one-in-one by the 10 minute mark in each half we should have been aggressive and gone to the FT line more than a total of 16 times. That's on the coaches...

Does anyone know if we traveled well with our fan base? I'm guessing based on their alumni base PSU brought the most fans, but that's just a guess. I'll answer my own question in Spanglish... Viendo no verde o oro on TV no gringo fan.

Viendo no verde o oro on TV no gringo fan. There were about 15-20 Wright State fans at the game. Penn State may have had just a few more. Bradley was the best represented but no more than 50 either. The atmosphere was actually quite electric in a small ballroom. They brought in buses with small kids, half of whom were chanting and yelling and clapping "Riders, Riders, Riders" with a long "rrrrr" non-stop all game long. Would love to import them to the Nutter Center.

We're really missing leadership and physicality in this game. Something we'd likely gotten from Winchester and Hall, but that's beating a dead horse at this point. I would love to hear what you saw in either Winchester or Hall's play last year to make you think that they would be leading this team this year. I don't think they would be the leaders on the team, but they are two guys who can come close to matching the length/athleticism of these Power 5 schools. Winchester was one of the few bright spots in the NCAA Tourney game last year.

sport, they would also provide depth and allow us to go 7-8 deep with legit div i talent. You cannot have too many long athletic players.

I have mellowed a lot in my retirement years.....except for an occasional tossed golf club after a chunked shot. but I spent 20 years or so arguing with some raider fans that this program has not developed and should have reached a point where we can get out on the court with the big boys and compete with most and win our share. I know mid majors can do this because many have done it. I have watched Dayton, Butler, Wichita, creighton etc beat big boys regularly.
Meanwhile we get on the court with the big boys and fold like a cheap suit.i have been told by several that I expect too much from the raiders and us beating the big boys is expecting too much. drop, you exemplified that with your post. apparently if we avoid trailing by more than 20 pts against the big boys it is a successful outing against them.
back in 12 I believe, I closed a comment about our 40 pt butt whipping by uc with the comment that I had hoped we would reach a point where we could compete with this type of team but we have not yet done so. Well, it is 6 years later and we still have not done so. Maybe we never will. Maybe the naysayers are right. I hope we can acquit ourself well tonight.

What do you guys expect? I enjoyed tonights game. I saw a team that didn't look scared of Penn State. Plus, the Raiders kept their composure and battled to the end. If they had shot a little better, especially at the start, WSU could have been within 5 or 6 points at the end. Did Penn State ever have over a 20 point lead on the Raiders? Scott Nagy, the coach of the team, says they looked scared. He must have seen something you didn't. Postgame Interview

zippy maybe if we spent more time on the court with quality opponents and less with div ii, iii or naia we would look more comfortable against them.

They definitely could have grown into leaders with more experience, and confidence. Not that it would have helped last night.... Their length and athleticism might have helped though.

I agree with keithfromxenia. I have been following WSU since 1979, and it seems I keep expecting them to take the next step to the next level but it never happens. I don't really expect us to beat Penn State or Tennessee but I do expect them to be competitive, and not get blown out.

I trust Nagy and hope he can take us to elite mid major status, or at least out of this conference. There is no reason we can't be the next mid major powerhouse.
