Well, we are done with our OOC portion of the schedule. I can't say that it was anything but a disappointment. I know we lost our top incoming recruit to grades. I know we lost one of our superstar freshmen from last year to transfer and we lost another to injury. Our coaches also put together one of our more challenging schedules in recent history. I hate the way we played through most of the OOC portion of our schedule. We have started off poorly in almost every game this year putting ourselves in a hole we had to dig out of the rest of the game and we have been very slow to make adjustments in games. We are much better than we have played and we lost several games we should have won.
That all being said, I am really optimistic going into HL play. We have been getting better as the season has progressed. The team played their best basketball of the season last night and we did it without Love. We moved the ball around very well and didn't live or die by the 3 last night. In our last game, Love was playing his best game of the season before he rolled his ankle. He was playing like the physical beast I think we all envisioned him to be this year. Our freshmen are starting to emerge and it looks like we will have a solid 8 man rotation the rest of the season if Coach Nagy continues to use them. The HL is better than it was last year, but only 2 teams finished their OOC schedules with winning records. There is no reason we cannot win this league if we give the type of effort we gave last night each and every HL game going forward.

I think we should be using a 8 man rotation in conference play. My starters would be Love, Wampler, Potter, Hughes, and Gentry. I'd play them all roughly 30 minutes a game. My bench would consist of Ernsthausen, Vest, and Smith. Ernsthausen should get 20 minutes a game backing up Love and Wampler. Vest should be getting 10 minutes backing up Potter. Smith should be getting 20 minutes backing up Hughes and Gentry.

Parker defends and Manns doesn’t. Vest has more hustle than anyone on the team and does a pretty good job staying in front of his man on defense. I would start Potter instead of him but would give him more than 10 minutes.

Manns should play over vest and parker imo. If Manns hasn't seen the court already he isn't going to be getting any type of playing time in HL play. I doubt the kid is even with us next year with Basile, Thielemans, and Holden added to the roster.

I don't know which player should play how many minutes. Coach Nagy sees them every day in practice, I trust him to figure out the player rotations.

He doesn't do this by throwing darts at a roster. You also need to factor in the the opposing team's lineup to get the right matchups. To come up with a set lineup for every game is a poor plan.

Anyone that has listened to coaches post game interviews or been to his radio show KNOWS he thinks he is playing his starters too many minutes and wants to get an 8 man rotation going. He just hasn’t been able to count on Smith’s contribution until recently. We need to get Smith and Potter more playing time not just for this year but to get them ready to take over next year.

Every coaching staff has someone responsible for tracking how many minutes each player has played in a game. They don't want to play a kid too many minutes and risk him getting hurt or being less effective later in the season. I think Oakland has been the standard for this the last several years. They have had one of the most talented starting five in the HL but always fizzled out at the end of the season and made quick exits in the HL tournament because their players had no legs left at the end of the year. If I remember correctly, I think Coach Nagy has said somewhere in the past that in a perfect world his starters would only be playing 30-32 minutes a game. Now there are a lot of exceptions to that too. As Paulkris pointed out, match ups with the opposing team effects playing time. Foul trouble effects playing time. Having a kid on a hot shooting streak is going to effect his playing time. (you never want to pull a kid out of a game when he is in the zone). Injuries effect playing time, etc, etc.
I think the key to the HL portion of our season is to keep playing 8 guys and make sure all 8 guys are playing aggressive basketball. To me the biggest difference between our last game and the several that we had lost over the last few weeks is how aggressive we were on offense. We had several guys attacking the basket. We had several guys looking for their own shot. A couple of games ago we had Gentry, Hughes, Vest, Wampler, and Parker on the court together and we were 18 minutes into the game. I looked at the box score online and out of those 5 guys only Wampler and Gentry had attempted a shot. That right there was the reason our offense stunk so bad under Donlon. We used to have 2-3 guys on the court all of the time that provided no offensive threat. You cannot win games when you are playing 2 on 5 on offense or even 3 on 5 on offense. You have to have a balanced offense with multiple scoring threats the defense has to respect and defend. During the second half of the MSU game when we went on our run and got back into the game, 6 different guys scored for us. MSU couldn't just try to shut down Gentry and Wampler. Parker, Hughes, Potter, and Smith all made contributions to our offense. We can still win the HL and make this a successful season but we are going to need all 8 guys in our rotation to bring it every night.

The only thing I care about for the conference portion of our schedule is how physical we play. We looked soft in several of our losses earlier this year. Win or lose, I want to see us be a physical scrappy team the rest of the year.

When we go strong to the basket we can score whether on a missed shot or getting fouled when the refs will call them. I don’t know how many times we get the ball and head fake and try to dribble a time or two under the basket and then go up weak with the ball after the defense has collapsed onto us.
Another thing please put defense on that far court inbounds pass late in the game when we have the lead. Letting the opposition roll the ball 3/4 court to the offense with no time ticking is stupid.
Plus a timely full court press when we get a good lead to change up on one possession or two would be awesome. Until this team’s execution is a lot better we can’t be getting off the gas especially in the second half to allow a team to come back. We need as many possessions as possible and need to get those offensive rebounds.
There comes a time when the coach is going to have major foul trouble and he is going to have to look down the bench at #9. Who is that player to give the legs a break? You can get by really well with 8 but get some whistle happy refs one night and it will be difficult to play just 8.
Overall our record does not show what kind of team this group can be.

My plan to combat our slow starts is to forbid a shot beyond 12 feet for the first 5 minutes of a game. Dribble drives or passes to the low post would be the plan. You either score, draw a foul or turn the ball over. That would be a 2 out of 3 chance of scoring. Probably higher than 22 seconds of passing and a desperation shot. I'm only half serious on this, by the way.
As far as pressuring the ball late in the game, coaches hate baseball passes. Scoring on one of those plays is as demoralizing as almost anything that can happen to a defense.
Our bench plays against competition every day in practice. They should be ready to play at the level of their ability no matter how many game minutes they have. I agree that it helps to have actual game minutes but I've never had a complaint about the way Nagy and his coaches distribute them.
