The big take away I got from the article is that we needed to trim the fat. Wright State currently employs 489 faculty members. Other universities with similar enrollment employ on average 375 faculty. It makes sense to eliminate positions when they are not needed. When Covid eventually goes away, the economy improves and enrollment increases, we can always increase the size of our workforce, but currently we are paying too many people that simply are not needed. Trimming the fat is only going to help our financially recover happen sooner.

If you can even remotely entertain cutting 113 jobs - equal to almost 25% of the total - then what the hall are you waiting for? We've been slipping financially and are/were under double-secret, financial probation...and we STILL have 113 jobs we can cut and still operate?! My goodness.
Tenure is an academic cancer that can - and must - be removed. What profession - outside of Congress - can you be totally inept and/or not even work for/during a "sabbatical" with FULL PAY? And you cannot be removed from your "job" no matter what? Who created that BS?
This laughable notion that tenure contributes to overall academic reputation is crap. Good/great teachers and successful graduates are what makes an academic reputation...not the number of elites who get to sit around doing nothing while spouting off their unfiltered opinions while collecting ridiculous $$$ from the students and the taxpayers.
Next up on my crusade? Snow days for public schools. How do we EVER have another snow day with virtual learning? Are school teachers unable to drive to work when it snows? Get up and go to work like the rest of us who pay the taxes to pay the salaries - and benefits.

Ah Willie, your totally logical rant makes you sound like a diabolical, green eyeshade bean counter! All you care about are profits and balanced budgets, you insensitive sod. You better shut up before the mob tries to destroy you.

You better shut up before the mob tries to destroy you. I'm with you Willie, and before anyone accuses me, I am indeed, an actual bean counter. The proof is in the pudding; WSU has more faculty on staff than the peer average. There's dozens if not hundreds of professors who have "tenure" that aren't worth a lick to the school, particular in the business school. The ineptitude and sheer sense of entitlement because they "have tenure" is an abomination and it's criminal that students have to learn from people who are so pompously arrogant and are completely unapproachable for help. Of course, this isn't everyone, but it sounds like there's plenty of fat to be cut, and when we're in as bad of a financial state we're in, trimming the fat is a standard operating procedure. I was surprised to see just how many more faculty we employ than the peer average, but WSU does offer a veritable pantheon of tracks and degrees, so I think there's some justification to be had there, but to turn this school around, and to turn athletics around as well, for the long term, this is the right play; at least until enrollment begins to turn around.

Are there more total faculty in Liberal Arts than the other colleges? The article heading implies Liberal Arts is taking the brunt of the cuts, but curious as to the cuts as a percentage of total faculty.
