We’re now past six weeks into the conference season. teams are setting their roles and rotations, and the hierarchy among teams is becoming clearer.
It’s a two team race between Wright State and Cleveland State. If things go as they have, Dennis Gates will win Coach of the Year, potentially tied with Nagy.
After that, though, it gets a little muddy...
As of this post, no player has been named Player of the Week twice* during conference play. It could go to Naz Bohannon again this week, but Basile turned in two equally good performances in wins, which would make him another first timer. Even then, two weekly awards out of doesn’t mean everything.
There are a lot of crappy teams, but there are standout players trying to carry them. Guys like AJ Bramah at RMU, and the re-emerging ghost of Antoine Davis haven’t been recognized yet. Jalen Moore got his first nod last week. Cleveland State plays by committee, so they’re winning without anyone in particular in a starring role.
So the question I have is...who is the Horizon League’s best player? Is it still Love? Is Love even OUR best player? Holden is more versatile, puts in more minutes, and may be more consistent than Love.
Basile has emerged at the top of the leaderboard in a TON of categories. He’s currently sixth in the nation in PER and ninth in field goal percentage while leading the league in blocks. Is he the league’s best player?
We’ve got a three-headed monster playing the 3,4, and 5, but do any stand out as the best? Do the guys on other teams without the support deserve more?
Am I seeing this through green and gold colored glasses? Is it even far enough into the season (the one that technically doesn’t exist anyway) to be thinking about this?
* note Rashad Williams won POtW twice including a share with Love during non conference play.
