I don't think there are many more "better" officials. I think the game is so fast and the players so big that it is hard call everything. I watch my friends working their way up the officiating ladder and they work so hard to get their chance at D1, then to move up to better conferences. They are evaluated and re-evaluated X 10. The guys we have are the cream that has risen to the top. I don't know what the answer is to improve officiating. I do. Be a better conference. Better conferences get better officials, plain and simple. Consider that there's probably something like 125ish d1 games today. The more seniored officials with longer careers, more ncaa tournaments, final 4s, etc. are not doing Horizon League games. It used to be that we'd draw in officials from power conferences when we had big tv games, but since we went to playing on the weekends, we've pissed that goodbye. I think Lamont Simpson doing the CSU games this weekend is the first "veteran" this conference has seen in ages. Most of these guys aren't much older than the players on the court. Bottom line is that we aren't a desirable league to officiate, so we get what we get. We're the asian carp of the basketball lake. Big 10 fans bitch about their officials all the time. I don't think we're going to get any better officials unless the HL pays a lot more. |
