1. We are in the HL. The HL is a bottom 1/3 conference. Very very few 4 star recruits signed with HL schools when we were a top 10-12 conference. Even less end up in the HL now. If you look at current HL rosters, I bet you cannot find more than 1/2 dozen former 4 star recruits in the entire conference.
2. We have a limited recruiting budget. We can waste it all going after kids that are never going to end up playing at Wright State or we can go after kids that fit our system. Nagy goes after kids that fit our system. He isn't going to change that no matter what you or I think about that.
3. Considering your above comments, I am going to assume you don't know that we currently have a former 4 star recruit on our roster: Tim Finke
3. Mark Alstork, Malachi Smith, Skyelar Potter, and Jaylon Hall were all entertaining players and could have helped us win more games. None of them were 4 star recruits. None of them were 3 star recruits. They were all 2 star recruits.

Jp, you hit several nails right on the head. I do think coach nagy has upped the ante on recruiting. If you look at the donlen era, we had recruits transferring out often, but where did they go? Usually div ii or iii programs. I may be forgetting someone but Mays to uk is the only one I remember going to another div i. Nagy’s recruits who leave at least are going to another div i program.
That said, you hit on the crucial issue. The hl has never been weaker and yet we have, what, one ncaa bid in 5 years, and of course it was a one and done. Think about this jp. This past season other than the raiders, the best net ranking for a league team just prior to our tournament was about 165. 165!!!! The second best team in the league was almost in the bottom half of all div i schools. And most hl teams were in the bottom half of net rankings. Yet we could not get out of the first round of our tournament.
Looking back at the past five years I would bet that almost every year we were considered the most talented team in the hl. We had the dominant post player most years, and that is where building a good team starts. Yet in LL’s four years here we accomplished nothing.
I think we have had enough talent the past few years to have some success in the dance, especially the last two years but we could not even win the tournament with teams i thought were way superior to our opponents.
On final thought. I know it is easy to say that the player transfers are the way it is and we just have to live with it. But in the future the mid majors who have success will be the ones who keep their players and develop them for 4 years.

I have offered a solution--recruit a star player, one that can make the difference when we need it. Yeah, I don't really buy that a star player cures all ills. Detroit hasn't won jack shit with Jr running the show there for the last 3 years. Vitaly was an NBA lottery pick for us and we were a .500 team when he was here. We played the last 2 years with the HL player of the year as our starting center. Hell, there is a good chance that next year's HL player of the year is going to be wearing a green and gold jersey. Tanner and Grant both have a legit shot at that award. Basketball is a team sport. The best mid-major teams that made real runs in the NCAAs were experienced and balanced teams. I think our biggest problem the last 2 years is we didn't use our bench enough and we weren't a complete team. Our starters were beat down by the time we got to the HL tournament because they all averaged a ton of minutes a game. I also think we lacked an athletic scoring guard that didn't need to rely on the 3. We have had a good inside game and inconsistent 3 point game the last few years. We really struggle with having someone that can create his own shot. Our last NCAA team before Nagy came here had no real inside game but we had 3 guards (Wood, Duggins, Brown) that could create their own shot and could score from all 3 levels. If Malachi Smith and Potter stayed at Wright State and bought into our team concept, I think we would have gone dancing the last 2 years. They both filled that void we were missing and having those 2 on the team would have made us a 8-9 player deep team instead of being a 6-7 player deep team. I am not giving Nagy a pass either. He needs to use all 3 of his open scholarships for next season and find a couple of impact type recruits for next season.

On the recruiting discussion board, Big D wrote about the new transfer Voss. In that post he also mentioned his expectation that last year's freshmen could reasonably be expected to make a nice jump in production. Those freshmen are Noel and Welage. Noel sat out due to injury and Welage couldn't get time from Hall...somehow. (Wish we had a head-banging emoji.)
If we assume everyone on the team today comes back - with or without Love - we are far from being in a desperate spot assuming last year's freshmen step-up and we get something from the incoming freshman (both reasonable assumptions). We really need another PG - backup or starter - and it would seem we have a good amount of guys who can play at the 2 or 3 and guys who can play the 4 or even 5 (with Grant as the stud).
I'm not sure we have "that guy" who can create his own shot...other than Holden in the lane and possibly Alex H outside. Not sure we have that driving G unless it's Welage or the incoming freshman G. I'm curious if anyone has seen something to indicate otherwise?
We have some missing pieces...but not a lot. JMO

JMO With our 2 remaining scholarships I think we really need 1-2 athletic guards that can create their own shot and create for their teammates. If we bring in a really good PG I could seen us use him and Norris as his backup and slide Trey over to the 2 to better utilize his skill sets and get our 5 best players on the court.

Well, it is 2 months later and we still have 1 spot open after the signing of UWM transfer Wilbourn. The most recent news on the recruiting board is a couple of 2022 offers. Are we done recruiting for next year or are we still trying to use that last scholarship?

I don't know if we are still trying to use that last scholarship or not. My guess is that having to replace 2 coaches in the last 6 weeks threw a wrench into our recruiting efforts. We might still be looking at a few available transfers but the safer bet is that we are banking that last scholarship for next year.
