Oakland baseball coach Jordan Banfield had their outfield fence removed and pushed back 20 feet to potentially “limit” the amount of home runs in the series. Outfield grass, 10 feet of dirt (original warning track), 10 feet of grass, then the fence. That's a pretty sleazy move, unless its been that way all season. Didn't seem to work, as Raidergang hit leadoff HRs in the 1st, 2nd, and 9th. The pinch hit HR in the 9th by Drew Baker tied the game, and they got one more on a Sass single after a Gregory hit and Greenwell sacrifice bunt. Bullpen made it stand up to win 7-6. Jake Shirk pitched 7 innings, and was solid other than a 5 run 2nd. Garrett Peters gets the win in relief, and Cam Allen the save. Why aren't these games on ESPN+? NKU got run ruled by YSU, so Raidergang now has a 2 game lead in the HL standings. Per the team, it was done this week and there were still fence posts and crushed up concrete where the old fence stood. Oakland was supposed to clean it up by game time today, not sure if that happened.

I will just add--three Raider HRs--Greenwell, Smith and Baker. The pitching is way better than it was a month ago, If it keeps improving good things will happen.

Oakland 15 Raiders 12
Well, the pitching staff dropped a turd then stepped in it a few times for good measure. Six pitchers were rolled out and everyone gave up more hits and earned runs than innings pitched. I don't want to think about it anymore. I am going to finish smoking this cigar I have going then it the sack. Hopefully, tomorrow the Raiders get back on track.

Does anyone think the season is too long? I don't have a problem with these May games because the school is over, but they sure miss a lot of school.
I would probably cut the first 3 weeks of the season out.

College baseball plays roughly 1/3 the games that MLB does. For comparison, college basketball is just under half the NBA, and college football is about 2/3 the NFL. So comparatively, the season does not seem too long.
Baseball also plays their league games on weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun), so there is less class missed (HL basketball also does this, and most leagues do for football). They do often play on Tuesday and occasionally Wed for non-league games, but the travel for baseball also seems somewhat less since we can get the big Ohio schools (UC, OSU, X) plus the MAC schools to play us. The only problem I see is playing in Feb and early Mar requires all the northern schools to road trip to the south and warmer weather.
Finally, D-1 athletics have always loaded their class schedules in the semester they don't play, and go light the semester they do. Plus they often go the summer semesters. This works well for football, volleyball, and baseball, where the season is within the semester. But basketball season is split across both semesters, yet somehow they make it work.

Raiders win 4-2. Good pitching! Took 2 of 3 for the weekend. Still 1 game up on NKU (who took 2 of 3 from YSU), and 3 games up on Oakland.
Next up, @pitt on Wed, then @ysu for 3 next weekend. Pitt is @ysu on Tues. Go Raiders!

Holy cow! Just a day after the pitching staff gave up 14 runs, RaiderGang pulls out a 4-2 win over Oakland. They only clubbed one HR (Patrick), and only used three pitchers to get the 4-2 win over Oakland.
Anyone who can figure this team out, please let me know.

I think its the every other appearance rule. If the pitcher had a good outing yesterday or last time, look out. If he got rocked last time out, he'll be effective today. And if the team gave up double digits yesterday, they will do better today...
Now if anyone can explain the pattern for our hitters...

Outfield grass, 10 feet of dirt (original warning track), 10 feet of grass, then the fence. To expand on this, it looks like Oakland started the fencing project on April 24th (after an April 23rd home game against Eastern Michigan). This gave them about 8 days to complete the project in time for our series. Interestingly enough, Oakland had a stretch from March 14-April 1 with no home games which would have gave them double the time to finish the project. Did the weather need to be warmer? Was the fencing company/maintenance crew only available that week?

Hmmm...maybe it took them some time to pry the money out of the university administration or maybe they found out that the union boys doing the work kind of work on their schedule, not yours. Anyway, it doesn't affect our RaiderGang all that much. If you think about it, the Nisch is a pitcher's ballpark and RaiderGang still clubs a crapload of HR at home.

Ugg. I was a little ticked that because the game was on ACCX network, I couldn't see it, even though I get the ACC network. In hindsight, not upset about it...
I'm still pissed that I'm paying for ESPN+, yet the Oakland and Youngstown road trips not even one of the three games were/are on -- yet those schools seem to have their home woman's softball games on ESPN+. I mean, two cameramen, a director, an announcer, and a couple of engineers and techs for 3-4 hours, plus you can get student interns to help out -- how hard is it? If I knew for sure that we would be hosting the HL tourney, I would have dropped ESPN+ by now since it only seems to get me the home games that we go see in person.
