2023/24 Roster:
Seniors: Trey Calvin SS Tanner Holden SS Andrew Welage Bo Myers SS
Juniors: Keaton Norris Alex Huibregtse RS AJ Braun
Sophomores: Brandon Noel RS
Freshmen: Logan Woods RS Drey Carter RS Dayjaun Anderson Kaden Brown Solomon Callaghan
Now that we got the final word that Tanner is eligible this year, the above roster is set. Now the real fun begins. Who is going to start and who is going to make the playing rotation? Will Nagy stick with his old ways and only play 7 guys meaningful minutes or will he take advantage of this roster depth and go 9-10 guys deep? Which of the freshmen play and which of them red-shirt?

Great questions. I know Nagy likes to red-shirt freshmen when he can, but I really hope at least 1-2 of them get meaningful playing time this year. I think the Italy trip could have really enhanced the chances of that. The last true freshmen that got major playing time just happened to be Trey Calvin and Tanner Holden. I don't think it is a coincidence that happened after they had the benefit showing our staff what they were capable of doing on our last foreign trip to Italy prior to their freshman year. I remember an article from that year stating that the original plan was to red-shirt Holden and give him a year in our strength and conditioning program, but he played so well on that trip that he not only made the rotation, he became a starter. Kaden Brown put up some impressive stats in Italy. I hope he played his way into the rotation. No offense to Keaton Norris, but he hasn't developed into the PG of the future for us. There is a major drop off in offense and defense, when he subs in for Calvin. I hope Kaden Brown is our back up PG this year. He is our future starting PG and I think he is a future star for us. I think he helps us win this year and I think extended playing time is going to benefit him for the future too.

Braden barely played at Cedarville, so I'm expecting very little there, but is Carson a D1 talent and able to add a little depth for the 4/5 positions (especially if either Noel/Braun get hurt)?

To be complete, the roster also lists walk-ons: Carson Schwieger, Freshman Braden Grant, RS Sophomore Nagy typically doesn’t play 30-40% of his scholarship players. I didn’t think it was worth listing them for the sake of this discussion. Wasn’t trying to offend anyone.

PG: Calvin obviously starts. Kaden Brown primary backup but only gets limited minutes. Keaton Norris is the odd man out.
SG: Alex Huibregtse starts, Andrew Welage gets minutes here. Logan Woods gets minutes here.
SF: Tanner Holden starts, Andrew Welage gets minutes here. Bo Myers gets minutes here.
PF: Brandon Noel starts, Drey Carter is primary backup. Bo Myers gets minutes here.
C: AJ Braun starts. Brandon Noel is our only backup.
Redshirts: Dajuan Anderson, Solomon Callaghan

Ukraine, think you are spot on. I hope Wellage gets lots of minutes, and could see him also getting time at the 4 when Noel and Braun are gassed or in foul trouble and we go smaller. Based on past experience, Nagy will still play Norris -- more than we will like. Have no way of knowing whether Myers finds minutes (can he play enough D to earn Nagy's trust?), or what roles the incoming freshmen will carve out.

I'm quite stoked about this roster...and what's coming...along with Tanner coming back. With so much talent and therefore moving parts, it's hard for me to say what we will/should do...but I know (3) things that I do NOT want to see:
#1 - Tanner regularly standing out at the 3pt line like he's some sort of sharp-shooter...he did that a lot at Ohio State. I love the guy's play, heart, hustle, toughness, etc. but he's better near the paint where those ^ attributes and his will make him very tough to deal with and gets him to the free throw line. We have several guys who are better outside shooters than him...and we lack depth inside / closer to the basket;
#2 - Norris playing more than about 5 minutes a half while Brown et al sit on the bench. I'm sure he's a great kid and teammate...but he's yet to show why he played the minutes he did last year...let alone the Finke-treatment that I'm afraid he'll get this year;
#3 - Welage getting the usual short-leash treatment. Big D has commented (correctly) numerous times that Welage has to be a more-physical defender to stay on the court. That said tho, to my eye he plays like he's afraid of getting yanked out if he makes a mistake...because he seems to get yanked out whenever he makes a mistake (and it's not like he's one of those guys who is constantly missing a play or is careless with the ball...cough...Finke...cough). He's a very smart player and needs to have the room and confidence to get into the feel/flow of the game.

That is one of the things that perplexes me so much. Norris is a great kid, but he just doesn’t bring anything to the table. Nagy preaches defense matters most to him. If you want to see the court, you play good defense. Norris plays horrible defense. It’s not due to a lack of effort. The kid is just too slow to defend athletic point guards and every guard he tries to defend is more athletic than him. If we want to have the type of season we want to have this year, Norris needs to sit and one or both of our freshmen PGs need to play this year. They are both extremely more athletic that Norris and they are the future of this program. We need to prepare both of them for 2024 when we no longer have Trey.

Welage needs to play more. He was one of the main reasons we won against nku two years ago. Not an opinion, it's a fact. He's not flashy but is one of the better over all players we have. He should be in the starting line up.
We seem to have a lot of talent this year. I hope to see more of our 2022 and 2023 freshmen. I doubt that happens but who knows. We probably end up playing a 8 man rotation with the 8th getting minimal minutes.
Starters: Calvin Alex Holden Noel AJ
Probably the order of bench (not what I want but what Nagy will do): Myers Carter Norris Welage Woods
