UW to host hoops tourney By JACK DALY Star-Tribune staff writer The Wyoming Cowboys usually have trouble finding teams that want to come play basketball in Laramie. The Pokes may have found a way to solve that problem for next season. UW will host a three-day, eight-team tournament in November at the Arena-Auditorium, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Casper Star-Tribune. The event will be hosted by the Black Coaches Association, which organized tournaments at North Carolina State and Marquette last season. The marquee teams in the field will be UW, Charlotte, Northwestern, UNC-Wilmington and Butler. In a recent column, ESPN.com's Andy Katz reported that Coppin State will also play in the event. Each team is guaranteed three games. One possible weekend for the tournament is Nov. 11-13, which would coincide with the Cowboys' football showdown with Brigham Young at War Memorial Stadium. Charlotte was a No. 7 seed in last year's NCAA tournament, losing to No. 10 seed N.C. State in the first round. The 49ers, who finished the season 21-8, lose seniors Brendan Plavich, Marcus Bennett and Eddie Basden and sophomore Martin Iti, who is transferring with former Natrona County High School standout Trei Steward to New Mexico State. Northwestern finished 15-16 last season using the Princeton-style offense, but the Wildcats boasted only one senior. UW head coach Steve McClain declined to comment about the tournament on Thursday. UW athletics director Gary Barta didn't return phone messages left by the Star-Tribune. As for the rest of the Cowboys' schedule, UW will host Southern Illinois at the Arena-Auditorium, Montana State at the Wyoming Shootout in Casper and travel to Washington State, Princeton and Denver. The Pokes are also looking to add another home game or two. In recent years, UW has played in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament and the Great Alaska Shootout, losing in the first round both times. This is unbelievable. How in the world does Butler get a four year STRAIGHT UP contract with OSU? Butler has a great schedule......wait a minute, mid-majors aren't suppose to be able to get home games with the big boys.........I guess someone forgot to tell Butler!
