Salyers has her say on 'Real Sports'
WSU coach Biancardi mentioned prominently during HBO interview
By Marc Katz
Dayton Daily News
The Kathleen Salyers vs. an Ohio State booster, Ohio State's basketball program and former assistant coach Paul Biancardi — that played out over the last year in the Dayton Daily News and other newspapers — goes before the bright lights tonight as HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel takes a look beginning at 10.
It appears no new ground was broken in the HBO report, but Biancardi — for the last two seasons Wright State's men's head coach — is cast as the instigator to provide OSU recruit Boban Savovic with money, gifts, schoolwork done by others and at least one grade change to keep him eligible.
HBO has already released transcripts of the show to the media.
Salyers also charges Biancardi with working with an agent to sign Savovic and other Serbian players, which is against NCAA regulations.
"I knew when Paul called that it was some sort of a crisis," Salyers tells Bernard Goldberg on the show.
Biancardi, who has denied the allegations but refused to talk about them, also declined to be interviewed by Real Sports, as did the agents involved and the OSU professor who allegedly changed Savovic's grade.
There is also no mention in the report of Jim O'Brien, OSU's head coach at the time, who was fired when he admitted to then OSU athletics director Andy Geiger he gave money to a recruit. The implication is that Biancardi broke NCAA regulations without his boss knowing.
Footage of Biancardi coaching — apparently all at WSU — is shown extensively on the segment, which will be re-aired several times this week.
