Former Cardinal realizes dream Former Ray-South star Young signs with Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee By Bill Althaus The Examiner Goodbye Indiana, hello Wisconsin.
Former Raytown South High School basketball standout Tyrone Young, who starred the past two seasons at junior college power Vincennes University in Vincennes, Ind., has signed a national letter to attend the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The Examiner's 2002-03 Player of the Year averaged 15 points as a freshman and 19 as a sophomore at Vincennes, and says he is looking forward to living out his dream at Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which was the surprise of the NCAA Tournament by making it to the Sweet 16.
"My dream came true when I signed to play at Wisconsin-Milwaukee," said Young, who was decked out in a Jim Brown retro football jersey and Kansas City Royals baseball cap as he sat in the gymnasium at his alma mater Tuesday afternoon, watching a pickup game. "And I owe it all to coach (Bud) Lathrop. He cared for me before he even knew I could play. When you talk about dreams, I can say my dream came true because of him."
Young was about to fall through the education cracks when he transferred from Raytown to Raytown South, just prior to his junior year in high school.
Tyrone Young "I never saw him play ball, because he was ineligible at Raytown ®¢ and you know I don't go watch that AAU stuff," veteran coach Bud Lathrop said. "I knew the kid needed help, and I was there for him. So were all his teachers at Raytown South. It's a great success story and there are a lot of people who are going to share in Tyrone's success."
When Young arrived at South, he read at a fourth-grade level. Today, he is a summer correspondence class away from completing his junior college hours.
"Pretty amazing, isn't it?" asked Young, who scored a junior college single-game career-high 37 points last season. "There's not a day that goes by in my life that I don't think, 'How did this all happen to me?' I have had so many people help me along the way.
"And you have to start with coach. He is like my father ®¢ he cares for me and my family, and I care a great deal about him. He would pick me up before school to make sure I got to class.
"And like I said, he didn't know what type of player I was. I knew I could play, but all he knew was what he heard. That's why I wanted to become a great player for him and succeed on the court and in the classroom."
He led the Cardinals to the Class 5 state championship game his senior year, averaging 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game. He was named to the all-state team and his all-state banner now hangs in the colorful South gymnasium.
"People ask me why I still coach," said Lathrop, 69, who has been the center of several controversies the past two years. "That's why I coach."
He was pointing at Young.
"It's a love affair," Lathrop continued. "I love what I'm doing and I love to help kids. Over the years, I've coached some pretty darn good players. And he and Jevon (Crudup, who led South to a 31-0 season in 1990) are the tops. They are two great young men. Jevon has accomplished so much in his life, and Tyrone will do the same thing."
Young said he likes everything about his new university.
"The coach is great, they are an exciting team and they have made it to the NCAA Tournament the past two years," Young said. "I can hardly wait to get there."
Bruce Pearl led the Panthers to those NCAA Tournament berths but left in the offseason for Tennessee. Rob Jeter, a former Wisconsin assistant, takes over for Pearl in Milwaukee.

Post player becomes first Rambler to hail from Australia CHICAGO (May 20, 2005) – Kye Pattrick (Balnarring, Australia/Ellsworth Community College), the first Rambler men’s basketball recruit ever from Australia, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Loyola University Chicago next season, head men’s coach Jim Whitesell announced today. Pattrick, a 6-foot-9, 250 pound forward/center, contributed 12.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 1.4 apg, while shooting 65 percent from the field last year at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the same junior college Whitesell attended. Pattrick earned first team all-region honors this season despite missing some time due to an injury. As a freshman at Ellsworth, he tallied 8.9 ppg and 5.9 rpg, hitting 60 percent of his tries from the field. “Kye has a great understanding of the game of basketball and has good basketball skills,” Whitesell said. “He has nice size and strength and will fit into what we do offensively. Kye provides us with a physical presence inside and really blossomed at Ellsworth under coach Troy Muilenburg. The city of Chicago was a big attraction to Kye, as was the outstanding academics at Loyola, since he plans to major in environmental studies. Kye is a great student and is a good piece to the puzzle.” Loyola returns three starters, including First Team All-Horizon League selection Blake Schilb, from last year’s squad that finished tied for fourth place in the Horizon League. Pattrick joins J.R. Blount and Brandon Woods as recruits who have signed to play at Loyola in 2005-06. p206.ezboard.com/framblermaniafrm1.showMessage?topicID=5423.topic

Butler Signs Two Men's Basketball Players Bulldogs add a pair of transfers during spring signing period May 20, 2005 Butler men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter added both immediate help and future help for the Bulldogs by landing a pair of transfer students to close out the NCAA spring signing period. Lickliter received commitments from Marcus Nellems of Marshalltown Community College and former IPFW player Peter Campbell to join the Bulldogs next fall. Nellems, a former Indiana prep player at Fort Wayne Northrop High School, started every game for two seasons at Marshalltown. The 6-4 wing player was a team co-captain in both of his seasons at the Iowa community college. Campbell, who was a top Indiana high school player at Yorktown High School, played one full season at IPFW. He was named NCAA Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year for 2004-05. "Marcus and Pete are a good fit for us," said Lickliter, who's heading into his fifth season at the Bulldogs' helm. "Both players bring added experience, and their skills and approach to the game compliment our current players. Marcus will be eligible next season, while Pete will have to sit out one year. Both players will have two years of eligibility remaining." Nellems averaged just over nine points as a freshman and just over eight points as a sophomore on a team that featured six NCAA Division I players. He led the 25-9 Tigers in three-point field goals in 2004-05, while topping the squad in assist/turnover ratio and steal/turnover ratio. He earned honorable mention on the 2005 NJCAA All-Region XI team. As a high school senior, Nellems helped lead Northrop to its first sectional championship in 15 years! He was a two-year starter in high school, and he earned honorable mention All-State recognition. Campbell, who sat out his first season at IPFW as a "redshirt", played in 28 games for the Mastodons last year and finished as the team's second-leading scorer with an 11.1 average. He led the team in three-point field goals and free throw shooting. The 6-7 forward posted a high game of 28 points and 10 rebounds against Kent State, and he scored 21 points in a victory over Youngstown State. He had 16 double-figures scoring performances. A three-time honorable mention all-state performer at Yorktown, Campbell was named Anderson Herald Bulletin Co-Player of the Year after his senior season. He was a three-time All-Hoosier Heritage Conference pick and a three-time All-Delaware County performer. He was selected to participate in the Indiana "Top 40" workout in 2003. butlersports.collegesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/052005aaa.html

June 21, 2005 Men's Basketball: Junior College Guard First to Sign For Slocum Youngstown – Youngstown State Head Basketball Coach Jerry Slocum announced the signing of junior college guard Keston Roberts to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday. Roberts, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., becomes the first student-athlete to sign with the Penguins men's basketball program since Slocum took over in April. “We are very excited about having Keston be a part of our program," Slocum said. "He is a quality young man who has great basketball ability. His offensive skills are very special and we look for him to become a key part of our program." Roberts, who is 6-4, 200 pounds, played at Connors State College in Warner, Okla., during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons for Coach Bill Muse. For the Cowboys he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds a game as a sophomore. He did not play basketball last season after returning to Brooklyn to help take care of his family. Roberts said he is anxious to return to the court and help change the Youngstown State men's basketball program's fortunes. "I thought Youngstown was a good fit for me," Roberts said. "I hope I can come in and make an impact right away. I really felt comfortable with the coaching staff and they told me it was pretty much a new program. They are trying to make it a winning program and that was a good selling point for me." Prior to playing at Connors State, Roberts spent a year at Mount Zion Christian Academy in Durham, N.C. At Mount Zion, he averaged 12 points and six rebounds in the 2001-02 campaign for Coach Antonio Fozard. In Brooklyn, he played for Erasmus Hall High School averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior for Coach Vic Butler. Roberts joins Poland guard Chad Fender as the Penguins' two signees for the upcoming 2005-06 campaign. www.ysu.edu/sports/mens_bball/200506/robertssign.htm

CHICAGO (June 23, 2005) – Matt Adler, a 6-foot-11 center from St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio, will join the Loyola University Chicago men’s basketball roster as an invited walk-on next year, head coach Jim Whitesell announced today.
Last season as a senior at St. Ignatius, Adler averaged 6.5 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 4.0 bpg, helping his squad to an 18-5 ledger. An intimidating presence in the lane because of his size, Adler set a school record with 93 blocks in 2004-05 and finished his career as the all-time leader in that category (135) at St. Ignatius.
“Matt is someone who we feel can develop into a fine player with a lot of hard work,” Whitesell said. “We like his size and length and he comes from a terrific high program at St. Ignatius in Cleveland. It is always nice to add a player from a Jesuit high school.”
Loyola returns three starters, including First Team All-Horizon League selection Blake Schilb, from last year’s squad that finished tied for fourth place in the Horizon League.

Leon Young Signs With Loyola Men’s Basketball CHICAGO (June 27, 2005) – Loyola University Chicago head men’s basketball coach Jim Whitesell announced today the signing of Leon Young, to a National Letter of Intent. Young joins guard J.R. Blount (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Dominican) and forwards Brandon Woods (Moreno Valley, Calif./Canyon Springs/Eastern Arizona CC) and Kye Pattrick (Balnarring, Australia/Ellsworth CC) in the Ramblers’ recruiting class for 2005-06. Young was a third team all-state selection at Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Calif. As a senior, the 6-foot-6 forward averaged 21.4 ppg and 15.5 rpg. Those gaudy statistics were an improvement over his impressive junior year numbers of 16.8 ppg and 12.4 rpg. Using his athletic ability and knack for the ball, Young led the entire state of California in rebounding as a senior and also broke the state record by snagging 30 boards in a game. “Leon fills a needed void for us,” Whitesell said. “He will provide us with a low-post scoring and rebounding threat. Rebounding was an area where we really struggled last year and Leon has the ability to step in and contribute right away in that regard. Leon played in a great high school league in California and is very explosive around the basket and is a tremendous finisher. At Lakewood, he was well-coached by Matt Ruiz, who really helped Leon develop into the player he is today.” Loyola returns three starters, including First Team All-Horizon League selection Blake Schilb, from last year’s squad that finished tied for fourth place in the Horizon League and won nine of its final 13 contests www.loyolaramblers.com/sports/mbball/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=10137

Looks like we avoided a bullet by not getting Foust when he left Oklahoma. ___________________________________ The Columbus Dispatch Saturday, February 19, 2005 A Franklin County grand jury indicted former Brookhaven basketball player Brandon Foust yesterday on a felony-burglary charge. He is scheduled to appear in Common Pleas Court on Monday. Columbus police allege that Foust, 21, of 6061 Hampstead Dr., broke into the home of a neighbor on Hampstead Drive on Feb. 10 and removed several items with a teenage accomplice. An eyewitness observed the break-in and notified police and the homeowner, according to a police report. Officers found the house ransacked. They tracked footprints in the snow to Foust's house and made the arrest. Items recovered by police included $3,700 in jewelry and a 20-inch flat-screen television. Foust has been ordered to stay away from the home. A conviction for burglary is punishable by up to eight years in prison. The former Brookhaven standout ran into team disciplinary troubles while playing at Oklahoma and then announced in December he was transferring from the university for lack of playing time. He left Oklahoma after averaging 2.8 points and one rebound in five games this season Just alittle follow up on Brandon Foust. He received two years probation for his part in the burglary at a neighbor's house. No word yet on if any colleges are going to give him a chance to play ball again.
