Towson suspends Whiters after guard is charged with sex offense in county
Transfer also is charged with robbery, gun violation
By Gary Lambrecht
Terrance Whiters, who was expected to start in the backcourt for the Towson University men's basketball team this season, has been suspended indefinitely by coach Pat Kennedy after being charged by Baltimore County police last month with two, third-degree sex offenses, armed robbery and a felony handgun violation.
Whiters, 22, a Baltimore native who attended St. Frances Academy, transferred to Towson a year ago and sat out the 2004-2005 season after playing for two years at Loyola of Chicago. He ranked third on the team in scoring as a sophomore by averaging 10.4 points per game.
The fourth-year junior figured to challenge senior Cantrell Fletcher for the starting point guard job, Kennedy said.
"These situations are always extremely unfortunate," said Kennedy, who added he will address Whiters' possible dismissal from the program later. "We always wait until the [legal] process plays itself through."
According to police charging documents, Whiters and another man, whose age and address couldn't be confirmed yesterday, allegedly paid a 15-year-old female $200 in exchange for sex on Aug. 19 at Whiters' Towson apartment on Clybourne Court.
Police alleged that, while the three remained in Whiters' apartment, the other man pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the money back. Police reported after the man and the victim fought for control of her pocketbook, the victim produced the money and threw it on a couch, and Whiters retrieved it and put it in his pocket.
Whiters was released on $20,000 bond. He faces a preliminary district court hearing Sept. 16. The other man also faces charges.
"We never expel somebody until we know it's the right thing to do," Towson athletic director Wayne Edwards said. "Ultimately, as the whole process spells itself out, we'll make that decision. Now is not the time to make it."
Whiters, 5 feet 10, 165 pounds, starred at Laurinburg (N.C.) Institute as a high school senior. He led Laurinburg to a 29-6 record and a No. 15 ranking in national prep school polls.
