Purdue kicks freshman guard off team Posted: January 23, 2006 Associated Press WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue freshman guard Korey Spates has been removed from the Boilermakers' roster for what the school said was conduct detrimental to the team. Spates was averaging 10.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game for Purdue, which has lost four projected starters to injuries or suspensions this season. "We felt that it would be in the best interests of Korey and our team to part company," Purdue coach Matt Painter said Monday in a statement. "I wish nothing but the best for him and his family." Painter suspended the 6-foot Spates for six days in November before the season started. Spates did not practice on Monday, and his release was not the result of a single action, team spokesman Elliot Bloom said. Spates had played in 15 games for the Boilermakers (7-10, 1-5 Big Ten). He played 16 minutes and scored five points in Saturday's loss to No. 13 Indiana. www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=56104

Spates is a big time player and would thrive in a guard oriented conference like the horizon league. I don't know what his off the court issues have been and I don't know if his talent is worth taking on those issues. Just my 2 cents.

If our coaches feel he is coachable I would take him in a heartbeat. He is DaShaun Wood with a 3 point shot. He would have to sit out next year after transferring, but he would be eligible the following year. That would be just in time to take over as our starting pg, since Wood will graduate after next season.

He was a true freshman starting in the Big 10. I can live with those stats and I think our coaches could teach him to make better decisions with the ball while he sits out next season.

My thoughts exactly Big D,
The assist to turnover rate is bad, but being the main ball handler, a little over 3 turnovers a game is not outrageous considering the decent teams purdue has faced, and it is something that can be fixed. The assists may because Purdue is horrible and can't make any baskets off a pass.
I haven't seen the kid play, so I really do not know if he is a poor point guard/ballhandler or not, but contrary to the "statmaster's" quote, stats do sometimes tell a lie, or at least a misrepresentation, when the stat depends on other people besides the individual himself, such as in assists. He can make all the great passes he wants, but if nobody makes a shot there is not assist.

Korey Spates will never end up at Wright State and it won't be because we turn him away. He will end up at a higher ranked program. Most likely another BCS school. As a high school senior he averaged 26.6 points, 8.8 rebounds 3.1 assists and 3.8 steals per game. He was named Div. II first team All-State as a junior and senior. He was a four year varsity player. He was ranked in the top 200 nationally by Rivals (130), Hoopmasters (111), and Hoopscoop (190). If Wright State had a chance in hell at signing him, they should go after him.

Its obvious that this kid has some baggage. Why would another BCS program program take a chance on him when they can get a recruit of thier own with egual talents without the baggage? I suspect that he will end up a lower tier program, but who knows where.

I think he will end up at a BCS school for 2 reasons:
1. Spates thinks he is too good to play on a mid-major. He will go to a junior college for a year before he would settle on going to a mid-major.
2. Not all BCS programs can recruit a player of Spates talent without the baggage. Every conference, including BCS conferences, have cellar dwellers. One of those lower ranked BCS teams will take a chance on him.

Look at his assist to turnover ratio. horrible. I'd take him today. We need someone who wants the ball in crunch time. Our guys look like they are going to wet their pants when their backs are against the wall.
