Tough week awaits Raiders By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | What an important week this will be for the Wright State men's basketball program. Not only will the Raiders host three games — beginning tonight with Youngstown State — the NCAA Infractions Committee hearing for coach Paul Biancardi continues in Chicago on Friday and Saturday. Biancardi — who has been charged with recruiting violations while he was an Ohio State assistant — plans on coaching Thursday night's game against Milwaukee, then fly to Chicago Friday morning for the hearing. He will return Saturday afternoon to coach the game against Green Bay. At least one of his players — junior co-captain DaShaun Wood — thinks the team will respond to its current four-game losing streak. "The more tough games we lose, the more we come together," said Wood following Saturday's 70-62 loss at Butler. While the Raiders haven't lost by much, they have not won since beating YSU 64-60 in Youngstown on Jan. 12. The four-game losing streak matches the 0-4 season's start. Co-captain Drew Burleson was not happy with Saturday's outcome, saying there was no excuse while adding, "People have to start stepping up — right now." Wright State began the league schedule with four straight victories and hasn't won since, including road losses to Green Bay and Milwaukee. During one of those games — possibly tonight — Wood will become the 25th player to score 1,000 points for the Raiders. He needs only 20. Horizon League boasts balance By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | How close is the Horizon League? Youngstown State, visiting Wright State tonight, has won two of its last three games, including a victory over Butler, which beat WSU on Saturday. Green Bay, which beat WSU 57-44 on Jan. 19, visits Saturday. The Phoenix have lost two of the three games they've played since beating the Raiders. Just halfway through the league schedule, Milwaukee shows one league loss, Butler three, WSU four and five teams have five losses. Illinois-Chicago is at the bottom with six losses, and the Flames just beat not only WSU, but Green Bay as well. "I don't think there's one team in the league that can beat its chest and say, 'We're the best,'?" WSU coach Paul Biancardi said. "The good thing is, in less than 48 hours, we have another game." He said that after WSU's loss at Butler. Milwaukee's best One re-creation of the Ratings Percentage Index used by the NCAA to rate teams prior to the NCAA tournament lists WSU 203 in the country. Milwaukee heads the Horizon League with a rank of No. 22. Butler is next at 110. The other teams, in order, are UIC (132), Loyola (139), Green Bay (156), Detroit (199), Cleveland State (223) and Youngstown State (292). 'Bad start' Biancardi pointed out the Raiders "got off to a bad start," against Butler, falling behind 27-7. "It seemed like they threw a knockout punch," the coach said. "We wobbled, but we didn't break." The Raiders wobbled back to a six-point deficit mid-way into the second half, but couldn't close, a problem of late. Help wanted The spotty WSU offense is getting double-figure points from DaShaun Wood and Drew Burleson, and Jordan Pleiman is getting close, but after that, there's hardly a big scorer on the team. Starting guard Jaron Taylor has not scored in two of his last three games and another starting guard, William Graham, has been shut out in one of those three games. Graham has scored six points total in the last three games. The Raiders have not had a double-figure scorer off the bench since the last YSU game, Jan. 12, when Tyrone Scott scored 10 and Walter Chancellor 11. Stepping up The last time WSU and YSU met, Penguins star Quin Humphrey was held to 14 points, about half his average at the time, but Keston Roberts threw in 28. Humphrey leads the league with a nearly 20-point average. Bracket Busters • Match-ups for Bracket Buster Saturday, Feb. 18, should be announced this week, maybe as early as today. Wright State will be a road team. Since WSU has already played — and lost — to five Mid-American Conference teams, the school has asked not to be paired with another one, if possible. The games are also supposed to match teams with similar records, so maybe the Raiders will be able to go to Eastern Kentucky, which has a 10-9 record. It was a much better effort tonight. Congratulations to Wood on his 1000. Hopefully Drew will stick around next season and join him on that list. He has just under 800 points for his career.
It was nice to see Spencer play tonight. He was under control the whole game and played within the system. I hope this continues to lead to more minutes for him.
Craft also played a few good minutes tonight. He picked up a basket and a few rebounds. I wish we would have red shirted him. He has a ton of potential and I think we wasted this year on him.

We solidified 3rd place for the time being. We have 2 more big games this week. We can retake 2nd place if we take care of business.

It was nice to leave the Nutter Center with a coupon for a Big MAC and a smile on my face. It has been awhile since I have been able to say that.

Not only did Spencer play more minutes but he was in towards the end of the game during "critical" minutes.
Deshaun had one of those nights and his numbers speak for themselves.
Jordan had another solid game. All he does is score in the low post, defend, and rebound. If he keeps progressing he'll be unstoppable in the HL his Jr. & Sr. years.
Drew, you have the rest of your life to be a dentist and only one more year to be a basketball player so please stay your last year. You have your whole life to be a grown up, stay young at heart and stay on the court.
I really, really would like to see Tyrone start. He is much more of and offensive threat then either Jaron or Graham and until tonight have struggle mightly offensively. I would start Tryone over Graham but that is just and opinion of a average fan.
Hopefully this gets some of the confidence back coming into the Wisconsin teams. Nice win!

January 30, 2006 (News Release/Men's Basketball) Wood Leads Men to Win Over Youngstown State Behind a milestone night from junior guard DaShaun Wood, the Wright State men's basketball team broke a four-game losing streak Monday night with a 81-67 decision over the Youngstown State Penguins in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center. The Raiders jumped out to a 14-4 lead five minutes into the contest, six of those coming from Jordan Pleiman and five by Wood, and maintained at least a seven-point advantage the rest of the half before going on a 10-3 run the final 2:20 to go up 42-26 at the break. WSU had just a slight advantage in field goal percentage in the first half at 46-45 percent, but the Raiders had 15 more attempts thanks to a 22-12 rebounding edge, including 13-4 on the offensive end. Wright State also dominated in points in the paint the first 20 minutes at 16-8. Wright State led by as much as 46-27 following a William Graham dunk with 18:55 to play, but the Penguins chipped away from there and trailed just 76-67 after a Derrick Harris three with two minutes left. The Raiders, though, scored the final five points, three from Jaron Taylor, to close out the game. Both teams shot an even 50 percent for the game, but again WSU had 12 more attempts as they outrebounded Youngstown State 33-25, 15-8 on the offensive side. The Raiders also dominated in points in the paint 38-18 and in points off of turnovers 11-4 as they forced 10 miscues while committing only four. Wood became the 25th Wright State player to reach the 1000-point mark with a jumper in the second half and went on to score a career-high 35 points. He was 11 of 20 from the field, including three-of-four from behind the arc, and was 10 of 12 from the foul line. Wood also added seven rebounds and three assists. Drew Burleson added 13 points for the Raiders while Jordan Pleiman chipped in 12 points and seven boards. Quin Humphrey paced Youngstown State (7-13, 4-6 Horizon) with 15 points while Domonique Crawford had 14 off the bench and Harris 13. John Barber posted a double-double of 12 points and as many rebounds. The Raiders now 9-10 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League, continue the three-game homestand on Thursday, February 2, against League-leading UW-Milwaukee. Game time is 7:00. www.wsuraiders.com/cgi-bin/athletics/news.cgi?action=features&id=2593

WSU's Wood sets career high against YSU By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | Near the end, the score did get closer, but junior Wright State guard DaShaun Wood kept pulling away. Wood finished with a career-high 35 points in becoming the 25th player to join WSU's 1,000-point club as the Raiders beat Youngstown State, 81-67, in a Horizon League game Monday night at the Nutter Center. "Not everybody can say they scored 1,000 points," Wood said. "It's an honor. But the cherry on top was winning the game. I would have taken zero points and that win." He made 11 of 20 field-goal tries, including three of four from 3-point range. He sank 10 of 12 free-throw attempts. Wood had been in a funk lately as the Raiders lost four straight, including three in which they were widely outscored in the late minutes. In this one the Raiders streaked to a 42-26 halftime lead and jacked it up to 19 points early in the second half. But the Penguins knocked the lead to nine with two minutes to play. "I didn't want to let my team down and I didn't want to let happen what happened in the past," Wood said. "I knew somebody had to step up and make plays for the team as well as try to get some easy baskets for myself." Wood scored nine of WSU's final 18 points and was removed from the game with 26 seconds left to a standing ovation. "I think he took control of the game from the onset," WSU coach Paul Biancardi said. "He's everything you want as a coach. He's a perfect student athlete." WSU NOTES Wood's milestone 1,000th career point goes unnoticed for a while By Marc Katz Dayton Daily News FAIRBORN | It took a little time for Wright State to acknowledge DaShaun Wood's 1,000th point as a Raider Monday night. He needed 20 to become the 25th player in the select club, and he nailed a little jumper with 17:01 left in the game to reach that figure. Wood added 15 more to move his career, single-game high to 35 points. But when Wood hit for his 20th point, not everyone in the Nutter Center knew about it. His basket made it 48-29 and it was 50-33 when Youngstown State called time with 16:17 to play. With both teams in huddles, Wright State ran two public-address commercials, then, when the teams went back on the floor, announcer Gordie Wise broke the news. Wood received a standing ovation. "I didn't know it," Wood said when asked if he knew his basket gave him 1,000. "I knew right away," said teammate Jordan Pleiman. "I thought they would stop the game." Coach Paul Biancardi said he heard the announcement but paid attention to points only on the corner scoreboards — where the score of the game is displayed. Guard suspended Freshman reserve guard Robert Eldridge was suspended for the YSU game for unspecified reasons. Biancardi said only that he was suspended "for conduct detrimental to the program." Eldridge, who was suspended four games at the start of the season for shop-lifting, apparently did nothing of that magnitude. He is expected to be reinstated for the Milwaukee game Thursday. Quick hitters • The matchup for WSU in the Feb. 18 BracketBuster game will be announced this morning. Wright State, which hosted a game last year, will be on the road this year. • Pleiman's 12 points put him in double figures for the eighth time in nine games. He also recorded four fouls for the fourth straight game and the 14th time this season (including three foul-outs). He appeared to be a victim of some touch fouls. • The Raiders committed only four turnovers, prompting Biancardi to say he hoped that wasn't a "typographical error." It was the lowest total the Raiders have had this season. Their previous low was nine. Contact Marc Katz at 225-2157. www.daytondailynews.com/sports/content/sports/wsu/daily/0131wsunotes.html

That was a poor write up in the DDN. The game articles have seemed to decrease in quality. I will take the Raider Roundball write ups over the DDN for most games. The DDN used to do a lot better job covering the games in past years.
