Some thoughts on tonights game.
The bad:
Our perimeter defense was playing way to soft tonight. Their is nothing more frustrating then to see a team take open shots. If your guarding your man and he hits a tough shot their isn't much you can do about it but at least contest the shot. At the very least you have to get a hand up. Everrett Spencer went for the pump or head fake everytime. He's a freshman so I'll cut him some slack.
I was also disappointed in our rebounding especially on the long rebounds. Our guards were getting beat to the ball.
Drew looked sluggish tonight? He had at least two of his shots blocked with authority. I'll give him credit because he didn't seem to be intimidated.
If our defense plays like this against Tulsa it will get ugly in a hurry.
The good:
The offense over all looked pretty steady.
It looks like we are going to make it a priority this year to feed the ball to the low post. I like the inside-out concept. Last year we were so perimeter oriented do to our lack of and inside presence.
Zach played strong down on the post and opened up to receive the ball. He seemed willing to kick the ball back out to the perimeter when the double team came.
Vova played strong. His post moves seem a little more refined this year.
Deshaun needs to be more assertive the entire game. You don't want a ball hog, especially at the point, but he literally took the game over the last 2 minutes and bailed us out. With his ability to dribble penetrate he can cause problems for our opponents. He reminds me a little of Alan Jackson severals back for Butler.
Jaron Taylor is so calm. He always appears to be in control. I like his steady play.
I would have liked to have blown them out but this might be what the doctor ordered to open their eyes that they need to buckle down on defense if they want to be competitive this year. After getting 87 tagged on them by Eastern KY and then 75 by a NAIA II team they better wake up and listen to the coaches.
Considering we only have one senior and one junior I hope this is just a learning curve for some of the younger guys. We'll see!
What does everyone else think?
